Just did this Sunday 9/23/18. Good hike with kids 9 and 13 y/o. A few steeper parts but nothing too rugged. Have plenty of snacks and water. West Portal Road has a small stretched that is closed for bridge repair. You have to drive past the initial road closure signs to access the road to the trailhead. There are two parking lots, the smaller one being the first and the one where you access the trail. The larger one is very close and just beyond the first.

Great view

Scenic, saw lots of small wildlife. A hiker we passed saw a moose.

Great trail! Pretty easy trail compared to others. Rare incline/declines, easy terrain, mostly flat with the few areas of loose rocks. Good mix of lake and Dorset views. If you start the trail going to the right, it isn’t well marked about 2.5 miles in, but the trail strays pretty far from the actual lake. We kept ensuring we were turning left, and made it around without issue. The Lake trail loop isn’t well marked, even though all other trails are. The marshy area at the far end of the lake made for great viewing of moose! Overall pretty easy hike, but well worth the time spent here.

Short, great views of the falls.

Although it takes a while to reach the trailhead (where parking is limited), the hike around the lake is first-rate. The four+ mile loop is an easy to moderate trail shared with horses. This is one of the best hikes in the Arapaho National Recreation Area—don’t miss it!

This trailhead also allows access to other (more lengthy and difficult) hikes.

On our second visit to the lake, we watched kayakers and canoeists paddling around the lake. Fishermen were also in evidence.

Hiked this on Black Friday and with the road to the trailhead closed it adds about an extra mile out and back. Was pretty iced over and slick in areas so I hoghly recommend microspikes in the winter. I was the only one out there so I really enjoyed the serenity of watching the sunset over the frozen lake.

Saw two moose in the marsh area. Beautiful hike that’s on the easy end of moderate.

Great trail. Easy to get to (even with detour) and we hiked to top of the falls and saw another hiker swim in the river!

High mountain lake, nice easy trail.

Super easy, beautiful hike!! Fall is a great time to see the aspens changing!!

Really nice hike with good lake and Mountain View’s. I think this should be rated as easy. I’m not that fit and had no problems.

Nice trail. Be sure to past the Falls to see the creek upstream.

Nice short hike great views

Spectacular Lakes! I have hiked the world's mountain ranges- easy for the distance. What a pay-off!

Nice, fast hike.

Beautiful, relaxing hike! There are so many other trails here if you want more of a challenge.

Great Hike. lots of mule deer and small animals, heard Elk not to far off. We made it to the waterfalls but didn't go down to them since we were carrying our 4mo old son. glad we hiked it.

Great hike. Saw a huge bull moose in the marsh. Lots of dogs but totally worth it

it was cold and windy but worth it! I would rate it as a moderate. I am a lettercarrier and walk everyday. With the altitude I need to rest often. Coming down piece of cake.

Cute short easy trail with a little waterfall at the end. Great for families!

Great views but should not be marked as "Easy". Most of this trail is uphill, some parts smooth, some rocky and some stairs so the elderly or folks with disabilities are likely to struggle on this.

This is one of the prettiest hikes we’ve done in this area. You hike through mountain meadows and pine forests to the falls. It’s a steady uphill climb which might make this more moderate than easy for some. We saw a marmot. The ranger said moose are often seen in the meadow.

Was a pretty easy hike. I did Mt. Ida Trail this morning, so wanted an easier one to follow it up. The trail is through the Subalpine forest the whole way. Lots of trees, chipmunks, squirrels, etc. Watch for moose and mule deer for the first mile. I saw several mule deer, and came face to face with a momma moose and her calf on the trail. 20 yards out and I thought I was a goner! She couldnt have cared less. The falls are just a long set of tiny waterfalls that go on for a few hundred hards. Very pretty and cool. Worth the short, easy hike.
LOTS of small trout in the stream that gobbled up my flies. Catch and release, and was a lot of fun.
Would do it again.

Great hike. First section flat and wide. Could bring older folks or lazy teenagers. Saw three moose on way. Lots of meadows for viewing. Falls are terrific lunch spot.

Hiked this trail this morning with my family...husband, and two kids (age 5 and 7) and our 85 lb dog. We hiked it last year as well in hopes of seeing moose. Last year we didn’t see any moose. This year I saw a mother and a young moose just off the trail to the left about a mile and a quarter into the trail going clockwise around the lake. Didn’t see any other wildlife other than squirrels, bird and ducks. Relatively flat trail. Was quite muddy in spots this morning due to rain overnight. But a doable hike for our kids. The toughest part was the 9 mile dirt road drive out to it.
