The GR20 is a through hike from Calanzana to Conca. The entire GR20 takes about 12-16 days to hike. The route is one of the more challenging through routes in Europe. It is well marked with red and white blazes. It begins in Cadenza in the North and ends in Conca in the South. It can be done in either direction, but North to South is more popular with French hikers. The best time to do the trek is between late May/early June to late October. If you begin in May you will want to consider hiking south to north instead, as the Northern part of the hike is more prone to cold weather, there may be snow and many of the taller mountain passes in the North will require special equipment such as ropes, cramp ons, etc. July and August tend to be the busiest time of year to do the trek. There are refuges along the way. You can pay to stay in a refuge, but can also pay a fee to camp on the grounds if you have brought along a tent. Camping along the GR20 route is prohibited except at a refuge site. If you are doing this entire trek, plan to stay at multiple refuges over the course of your journey. Food for purchase in the refuges is not especially cheap, as it is difficult to get to the locations, but they each cook and sell food. You are welcome to cook your own meals as well a the refuges have indoor kitchens with fuel, water and basic utensils. Bring a lighter and a knife! There are pigs in the area that will mess with your backpacks or tents if they have food in them, so prepare accordingly. The best place to replenish supplies is Vizzanova; however, some supplies can be purchased at Asco Stagnu, Castel di Vergio, Bavella. Be sure to bring a filter or drops since this is a long trek. Many people have reported no issues with water supplies, but speak with locals in the refuges for the best, most up to date information. Dogs are welcome on this trek but are not welcome in the refuges and must be on a leash if there is wildlife around.
