Tough trail, definitely a beautiful lake. Not sure I’d need to do it again.

We had a beautiful hike to Grizzly Lake. The last half has little shade or cover as you are at timberline. Saw big horn sheep! Got to the lake and fished for a while. Great fishing and caught beautiful native cutthroats. Saw only a couple of hikers on the trail. Had it to ourselves pretty much the whole hike. Took our time going up as the altitude and the incline took their toll, but the views and the lake are totally worth it.

A great trail, but be prepared for some elevation gain. There was a mix of aspen stands and conifer forest. The lake is beautiful and totally worth the time spent on the trail.

Up hill most of the way up. Switchbacks galore. Challenging but great little hike, saw lots of wildlife. Be aware, it’s hunting season. Throw on some orange!

Great hike...tough and really steep most of the way up. Beautiful views. Glad I did it.

It tricked my watch! Shorter than the app posted!

Beautiful hike the entire way. It took us 3.5 hours round trip. Well worth the effort. Just a friendly reminder to bring moleskin for blisters!

Tourist trap. Comparable to Boulder’s Sanitas but with a looser and more narrow trail, heavier crowds, less shade, essentially nothing worth hiking to/seeing unless you just want a killer calf workout. Easily the worst hike I’ve done in Colorado.

Hiked it today with family, 4 hrs round trip including 30 mins for lunch, vertical comes at you fast in first hour, but manageable if you stay aerobic. This was my fourth or fifth time hiking American Lake, great for our first day, family in from East Coast, I came from the Okanagan in Canada. Certainly not one of the prettiest alpine lakes I have hiked to, in my opinion if the American Lake hike workout is your goal, do Cathedral instead

A great hike, incredible views and very strenuous. I thought I was doing well till a dog with 3 legs passed me up.....made it to the top & took gondola down.... best option.

Great hike. Loved views and refreshing swim in lake. Only few people on the trail so we felt like we had it all to ourselves.

It’s a challenging hike, but worth it. Great views from the top.

I didn’t read all the reviews so sorry if redundant. I’ve hiked nearly every trail near aspen over the last 30 years. I come back to this one. Great aspen to alpine forest variation. Descent workout going up. My sense is that the hike is more than 6mi round trip. The trail is remarkably clear and smooth for trails into the mountains. Great meadows near the top. When u get to the lake take the trail a bit further to the left side and there’s a great rocky outcropping to sit on to see the mountains that rise above the lake. Lake is clear and clean. Can see trout swimming clearly. Swim in the lake if you like cold- burrrrr. Saw someone cut their foot so be careful!

Gorgeous hike, quickly leave the trees for open hiking through fields of wildflowers surrounded by rugged peaks. Reminds me more of the Alps than a typical setting in the Rockies. BUT, and it’s a big but, it’s easy to forget in this range they the valleys are high and the ridges even higher - we got crushed by a massive hailstorm at 11:30am on our way down and even deep in the valley, there was no cover and a big hurting from nickel hail that accumulated thick on the trail. Respect the weather, and remember that the storms don’t always wait till the afternoon.

My GPS had this bike at 8.1 miles which is considerably more than the 5.8 miles noted. In any event, it was a nice hike that offered some steep climbs right from the parking lot. The overall hike up/down took about 3:40 minutes that included lunch at the lake. Nice viewing along the way and had ample trees to protect from the hot sun

Difficult but worth it - spectacular views

Absolutely loved this hike!!! Our GPS said it was 8.3 miles. GREAT WORKOUT. breathtaking beauty loved hiking through several Alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers of every color, crossed a few streams. pretty steep up the final mile ... really worked to get to the top. but we zipped down. We had a very late start after 4:15 so recommend starting earlier

Nice workout and incline through beautiful aspen grove. I prefer it in the fall when aspen are gold. Beautiful alpine lake with turquoise water. Take a dip in the summertime! One of my fav trails in the area.

This was a beautiful hike through a few different types of terrain. The first half is pretty climby, but once the path changes into a forest vibe, it mellows out to a far more moderate grade. My GPS clocks this at 6.4 miles round-trip. Bug spray was mandatory.

Great hike, quite uphill. Stunning lake at end.

A bit more difficult than expected but worth it. Steady incline and lots of switchbacks at the start in an Aspen Grove then into more pine trees and a few meadows with lots of wild flowers. The lake was gorgeous but very buggy.

Worth the effort for the views, wildflowers in July and fun trail. It is rated difficult bike trail in some guides but is very do-able for an advanced intermediate rider in relatively good shape. I spend 4 to 5 hours a week at gym or on bike at 100 feet altitude and I did fine. I gave myself a couple of days of hiking to acclimate to the 10,000+ feet altitude then rode the uphill very slow not letting my heart rate get out of control. The downhill was ultra fun with just a few technical spots that I walked for a few feet. I did slide out once in a tight curve and there are places where you might fall on the steep hillside but if you are careful it's not gonna happen. I did the 8 mile loop starting a Rustler's Gulch, climbed the DUSTY road 3 gradual miles then right to trail at top. Climbed/pushed 1.5 more miles on trail to another top but the flowers and views were fabulous during the climb. Then whoopee downhill rest of the way (there is one difficult curve that is steep and washed out but can be walked). Back at Rustler's Gulch there is a very deep creek to cross but if you go upstream about 50 feet and cross by big tree it's only a few inches deep then a push up semi-steep short hill on other side to get back on road. This trail is very popular and narrow, please be kind to other bikers and hikers which may mean slowing down for hikers and letting faster people pass you.

Excellent trail. First part is the hardest then it’s pretty smooth going the last half. Nice fields of wild flowers and you’re in and out of the forests. BRING BUG SPRAY, you’ll enjoy the lake much better. Happy hiking.

A great hike but don’t turn back at lookout rock. Head to the gondola. That trail will give you the feel of the mountain and the slopes that in months to come will
the source of more adventure.
