This is an awesome hike to an old hotel, fire tower, and cliff overlook of the Hudson Valley. The kids loved this one. Check out our full write up which includes directions and other things to look for.

really great hike, interesting hotel ruins and amazing views. It is uphill the entire way. If the lot is full, there is a bigger one further down the road, adding an easy .07 that takes you back to the main trailhead. We went in April, there was still snow, but melting, making for a very wet and slippery hike. poles were helpful going back down.

Very nice hike. If you just want to hike for exercise and don't care about views, take the blue path. We took the blue to red/orange/yellow back to orange and ending on the red. A little over 5.5 miles RT. The orange trail was long as well as the blue but a nice pay off seeing the 9/11 monument and a small but nice view of the mountains. There were nice little waterfalls along the way. The yellow trail also offered a view point At one point we felt as though we were walking into a magical area the way the sun reflected off the twisted trees and stream. The red trail offered a lot of little cascading waterfalls and a little stone and wooden house. overall a nice hike. I would rate it as moderate only because of the somewhat steep uphill hike on the blue trail.

I went there yesterday and it was the bees knees. The beginning portion was very easy to navigate but it got real icy about midway through. The packed snow/ice normally wouldn’t have been an issue for me however it was one of those semi warm days so the ice started to melt making it really slick. I could only imagine how funny it was for other hikers watching me crawl the trail as my bald boots slid while they walked it with ease. Definitely recommend pointy trekking poles and or spikes for your shoes if you don’t wanna embarrass yourself. The waterfall itself was absolutely stunning. Icicles and mist from the water really added to the natural beauty of the waterfall itself. As an added bonus i got to slide down the hill on my butt on my way back. 11/10 would return

Good hike and beautiful view at the top. Today was a tad windy and cold, but worth it. Pups loved it also.

Great weather on Saturday March 31 brought us here past the ruins to the tower. Easy hike thee hours RT includes 30 mins summit time at both tower and the view reached from the right of the observers cabin. BRING Microspikes!! So much ice and frozen snow with holes. No one else had micros there had to be injuries from falls. So many people struggled. BTW leave the sneakers at home. Again so many. Properly prepare for this. Great rewards for those who do.

Don’t underestimate its rating. Yes it is an old road trail but it uphill the entire way. Micro-spikes would be a great option as it’s ice and snow. The trailhead parking gets packed quickly but they fluctuate in and out so I was able to hold off for 10 mins and someone coming off the mountain was leaving. Another great day spent hiking and this one gives you more then the fire tower the abandoned hotel and house are a cool addition.

So much fun, and beautiful views! Went when there was still snow on the ground, would not recommend - very slick.

Awesome hike! Uphill the whole way up. Definitely need microspikes this time of year. Very icy right now (March). The view is beautiful. Very very very busy trail. Get there early! Came off the mountain and the parking lot was full and a hot mess.

Fun trail ... nice views ... firetower wasn’t open but awesome trail ...

Beautiful hike today in the snow. The waterfall was maybe even more spectacular than the last time I came in the middle of summer. Icicles and snow really added to the beauty. The trail was definitely slick (more packed snow than ice); spikes or poles would be a good choice.

Beautiful breath taking view!

As others have stated, getting to the trail was poorly marked and hard to find. No signs for trail starts anywhere from parking lots. However, once you find the trail it’s very well marked. Rock scrambles are difficult for dogs but do-able. Only a few steep parts and they’re on the rock scrambles. The views from Sunset Rock are absolutely beautiful.

This was a lovely hike!

We hiked it on a bizarrely warm day in February with a small chihuahua.

There were difficult moments peppered into what was overall a moderate difficulty level. Pretty icy in the winter and for our warm day there was a ton of mud that got you slipping and sliding. You must be careful on this hike but with some good boots you’re ok. Hang onto the trees! Go topside to avoid the ice patches. Some ice patches are hidden under lots of mud so be careful.!

But again, we were with a chihuahua so it couldn’t be so hard, right?

Waterfall lookout at the top is beautiful. I wish there were picnic tables or something but we found a goood rock to snack upon.

So many stairs. But pretty and doable.

The middle section (after the initial rock scramble ) turns into a gorgeous sloping up and down adventure.

Trailhead from the road says something like “preservation” so be careful not to miss it. Parking lot gets super crowded but people are in and out all day so if you just wait a flash you’ll get a spot. A small bit of walking along the highway to get to the trail.

Crowded at the trailhead but winds up being pretty private because of all the space. A small moment of oh-my-god-cliffs. Just hang on. It’s short-lived.

Would do again any day. So would Puppito.❤️

Trail is almost entirely melted after today’s weather ! It was a beautiful hike .. you don’t need spikes anymore unless the temperatures drop again. Will be going again soon

Beautiful hike to an abandoned hotel and a fire tower worth climbing. It’s definitely uphill but we did it with a chihuahua and he was fine!

Great hike to a beautiful waterfall. I took the red trail up. Blue trail looked pretty taxing and I was worried about footing in the snow. Continued to the end of the red trail but did not explore orange trail area with the 9/11 memorial. Next time.

We did this trail on the last day of december, it was cold and snowy with some ice. A good pair of microspikes is a good idea. It was -20 at summit so be prepared. Im in decent shape, very active and this is definetly a good incline but not unobtainable for the average. If your adventurous do the hike a hour and a half before sunrise and greet the sun from rock overlook just around bend from the ranger station. This hike is in my top favorites thus far as it gains elevation, its not long in distance, the view at overlook and firetower, the ruins of the hotel, the history in the catskill range, absolutely worth every step! The buddist monastery at parking lot is a great bonus. Safer in winter than summer for off trail exploring due to the rattlesnakes in summer so i hear, and you cant park anywhere but the lot so get there early or at less popular times.

The views from the top are fantastic. It’s good if you want a moderate out and back for exercise, but aesthetically it’s not outstanding. It’s a road with power lines.

Great quick and challenging hike! Ruins are pretty cool too! Be sure to get there early as the parking lot fills up quick and the local police fine people if they park on the road. I've heard the fines are quite pricey too.

Went on December 24 & the trail was covered in a sheet of ice. Bring shoe spikes! It’s not a difficult trail (slow elevation gain for 2.5 miles then back down) but the wintry conditions made it more interesting. Nice view of the Hudson from the top.

A very nice spot great views
Fantastic way to spend a December day
The only drawback was having to walk thru the campground since it is closed for the season
Even got to see a deer

Such a beautiful waterfall! This trail has a mild rock scramble which makes it fairly difficult, but due to the length being less than a mile, I suppose easy is the right rating.

Easy walk. Old hotel ruins are fun also!

This was a great trail however the map layout is a bit misleading. If you Map the walk to Boulder Rock it adds a bit of mileage and i don't think it was "Moderate" . However the views were gorgeous. There are some ledges to be really careful on if you go for some good views.

Great trail! Nice and short hike on a beautiful brisk November morning. The beginning of the trail begins with a hike alongside the falls. The overlook point of the falls is beautiful! You can get pretty close. The stairs are tough but manageable. Make sure you take the walk to the overlook platform. Another beautiful, worth it view
