This is one of the best hikes in one of the best national parks and arguably one of the best hikes in the country. The trail along the north or south shores of Lake Josephine are flat but it is heavy grizzly territory. After a little more than 2 miles from the trailhead you will begin the ascent up Mt. Grinnell. The climb is difficult but extremely rewarding. The views of the surrounding Many Glacier area are some of the best in the park and depending on the season, waterfalls are present along the cliff face from glacier runoffs. Once you get to the top you are greeted by Grinnell and Salamander Glaciers. The crystal clear blue glacier water is even more beautiful in person than it is in the photographs. Hikers can take a break relaxing near the glaciers before heading back down. Although it's a challenge, I think everyone that visits GNP should check-out this hike; you won't regret it! Really love this hike, so many fantastic views and when you make it to the lake it really is a mountaintop experience. We were so glad to be able to have the lake to ourselves. There is such fantastic energy up there. We experienced great stillness and awe. Late September, early October is a fantastic time to go. Wear a lightly insulated jacket and the weather is perfect. We encountered maybe 6 people in the 6 hrs we were on the trail. (We took our time, spent a good amount of time at the top and also stopped to take a lot of photos along the way.) it’s true, it’s not s very hard hike, just long. The beginning part is steep but it’s not bad knowing that it doesn’t last very long... it did hurt a bit on the way back though! We didn’t see goats, sheep, bears, or moose, (even with our binoculars out every other clearing!) but we did encounter two friendly deer and a small flock of female grouse. Since there was no one else on the trail most of the time, we clapped our hands before we went around any of the sharp turns in the wooded areas. Nearby trails were closed due to bear activity. Take your bear spray and keep a keen eye out in this area while you are enjoying the views!

This trail is a nice addition to the park since my last visit in the early eighties. Try to catch a walk with a Ranger for some interesting facts about the monument.

Great contrast between (down the hike) the Badlands and (up the hike) the Grassland.

We had a hike with beautiful weather and a nice breeze of wind. Perfectly doable with almost no traffic on the way.

Gotta be the most gorgeous day hike ever. So glad I did it when I was a bit younger and more in shape.

Possibly my favorite of all the lakes in Glacier. The hike isn't particularly hard, and offers great views throughout including a waterfall beside the trail. Iceberg Lake itself is beautiful, nestled under stadium like cliffs.

We hiked this with our kids in July. Took us 5.5 hrs to get up and 3 down. Well worth the work!! Beautiful views and great hike. We seen brown bears (so take bear spray) and mountain goats. If we did it again I would get there early and hike while it’s cooler...it get quite hot against the rock walls of the trail. Not a lot of shade. Take plenty of water. We refilled on the big waterfall as everyone else was...we did not get sick.

Absolutely amazing. Busy trail in the summer.

Beautiful views!

Best hike ever!!! We hiked it with all 4 of our kids ages10,7,5 and 3 (husband carried the 3yr old) we loved it!! It was early July so the end of the trail was closed due to snow. But still highly recommended!! Take water as it really warms up on the way back!

We hiked this on 10/17 and good golly was it beautiful! The park service closed the last 1.5 up to Upper Grinnell Lake due to bear activity, which was a bummer. We didn't see any four legged animals the whole hike and were the only humans on the trail. The highlight was definitely lunch on the dock at Josephine lake.

My son and I did this hike on 10/8/2018 and hiked in the snow the entire way. Absolutely breathtaking views and easy walking for majority of trail. Two adult grizzlies on the trail within 75 yards about 1/2 mile before lake. Decided not to bump them, so we never actually made it to the lake, but well worth the minimal effort. Will complete this hike next time in GNP!

This trail is probably amazing, but inaccessible after heavy rain! Fell a few times due to mud, so just be aware that if it is super muddy, you probably won't be able to hike it :( Will go back to see it when it is not muddy! :)

Beautiful trail! definitely would love to do it again.

Was snowing and the trail was muddy. Slogged through some running water in places.

This was a nice trail at the foothills of Mt Rushmore. Too bad half of the trail was closed for reno (closed until spring 2019). Grateful to have a ranger Dot take us on a quick guided tour of the trail to point out numerous facts about the mountain.

This is a fantastic hike - great views! Worth the detour to take the trail up to the glacier overlook (worth the steep trek). Highly recommend you retrace your steps after you get to the lodge - we made the mistake of ignoring other hikers’ advice and the last 4 miles to the road were the worst hiking ever - dusty, hot, biting flies and dodging mule dung, (no views) and then waiting an hour to get a shuttle (no seats on the 5 that passed by). Other than that this was the best day in the park! Wish we had time to do it twice!

My favorite hike in the Badlands. Great view from the top and a challenging ascent.

Great views, fun terrain to hike.

Very unique trail. We went out after a rain and it was extremely slick. But once we got back to the start it was dry. Rain makes for a very different trail experience. The trail crossed in front of big horned sheep that were grazing on a cliff . We did the medicine loop out and the castle trail back. This clocked in at 11.1 miles. Definitely do this early as there is very little shade and you are in full sun and wind exposure. Other than the slipperyness because of the rain it’s not hard or technical - the only hard part about it is 11 miles round-trip.

so sick

the top half was real grasslandy and windy and the bottom half was extremely badlandy

excellent contrast

loved the heck outta this trail, though it was chilly and rainy when i did it

beautiful mountain and lake side views along with three different water falls. only downside is personal, in that I prefer alpine trails :)

This was the highlight of our month of hiking and camping Montana! The hike around Lake Josephine is beautiful and flat but you will pay your dues in the last 2 miles which are an uphill grind. I made a video of the hike and my wife detailed her experience if anyone is interested: https://practicalvagabonds.com/grinnell-glacier/

Amazing views all around. We aren’t in great shape so it took us a little longer than others. There were a lot of people on the trail; views getting there and back were just as beautiful as the Hidden Lake. Mostly wooden planks and then there are gravel trails. Some snow on the boardwalks but dries out around noon.

Did this hike today (after Ptarmigan lake and tunnel). The views are spectacular and the lake is amazing. Saw a momma bear and her cubs near the lake. An easy hike all the way.

Great hike. Had a grizzly bear with two cubs in there area , we got some great photos ( from a great distance). The snow was still melting creating some cool waterfall that were falling over the trail, definitely need to use some caution on this trail. be safe

Wonderful hike with lots of wildlife. We seen a lot of Mt Goats and long horn sheep. The flowers were just starting to bloom.

Nice level hike on the prairie (once the ascent up Saddle Pass is completed) with great views of the Badlands

Short but challenging trail, especially when muddy, as it had rained the day before. Great view at the top and good way to access Medicine Root Trail.
