One of the best hikes I’ve done to date. Challenging esp with the altitude, amazing views

amazing hike. the wind was tough today but we'll worth the view at the lake. the sun is turning the snow into mashed potatoes in the afternoon, so I recommend starting early if you're doing this hike soon. I can't wait to do it again in the summer just to see how different everything looks.

Amazing!!! It was a bit slushy but mostly hard enough for spikes. Not too busy on a sat in April. The frozen lake at the end was the best part. One of the best hikes I’ve ever been on

Sunny through out day. Morning everything hard packed and frozen. Still spots to the side of trail when your in the woods where a leg will sink to the knee or thigh. Above the tree line very gusty. Glad I had goggles especially as the wind was blowing the snow at the lake toward the back and right. Used crampons and poles from the traverse to the lake. The traverse to the lake started getting soft around 10:30am. By noon, the traverse above the lake under Mt. Lady Washington toward the chute was soft. No avalanche risk at all, but could have slid down the traverses 50-100 feet without crampons. Spent a couple of hours at the top. Traversed above the lake below Mt. Lady Washington to check out the chute trail that goes to the top. Hope to do it this summer. The view of Longs Peak and back down the valley is great. Significantly less wind on the way back.

Didn't make it to the lake. The wind was way too brutal for me. beautiful views once you're above tree level

The hike would have been beautiful if it wasn’t so windy. Nervous about avalanche risk the last 1/2 mile, so we ended up turning around just short of the lake.

Did chasm 4/5/21 had a blast. Parts of the trail I had my whole leg step in snow had to pull myself up with upper body and poles. Crampons and poles and you’re good. The last hill to get to the lake was super steep but fun to go back down. Last mile is on narrow compact snow so follow the trail and be ready to slide and sink a bit :)

The trail is still snow covered, but starting to melt. The last .75 miles to Chasm Lake were a bit sketchy, and the portion of the path I stepped my foot into loosened up and a large sheet of snow and myself slid down until I was able to get my hiking pole into the ground to stop myself. Highly suggest both microspikes and hiking poles. Beautiful beautiful trail and lake!

4/3/21 hike. Parking lot was 1/4 full at 8.30am on a Saturday. 2 layers on the way up, tee shirt on the way down. Took some time to lounge and tan at the lake as it's well protected from the wind. Only needed MicroSpikes.

Great trail with views! Definitely need snowshoes about 2.5 miles in and especially if you want to make it to Chasm Lake. The last elevation is pretty tough as my snowshoes and poles weren’t enough to get me up it. I see why some reviewers say you need some mountaineering gear. Got about a mile away from the lake, was super bummed. I’ll be back though as I have another way of getting up the last elevation. Very windy as you hiked closer to the lake. Hiked on 3/28/21.

Well packed. Used micro spikes only on avalanche area. That area was sketchy. Rest of the hike pretty laid back. I forgot my poles, but made it just fine without.

If you’re hiking this between March 6 thru May—please read: You need to have proper equipment! This trail is a challenge in the current winter conditions. You need to have warm and sturdy boots, microspikes and trekking poles. Everything below tree line is icy. Navigation above tree line is challenging, know the route. The final traverse from the saddle has snow slide danger and I used my mountaineering axe. It was pretty stepped out, but still dangerous. Winds can change and temps can drop quickly. I saw a few couples out there with tennis shoes, cotton clothes and no packs. This is not the trail for unprepared hiking.

A bit slopey and slippery on the traverse to Chasm Lake. Had poles, but an ice axe would have been better. I bailed. Microspikes the whole way.

I did this trail with a few of my classmates from a WFR course. Two of them also run a company called Top Out Adventures. They were absolutely lovely and even helped us learned some ice mountaineering skills!
