Appalachian Trail
Lots of varied terrain. Great day out there. Tuesday morning didn’t see another person the whole hike. Added a detour to hit bald mountain... same distance but more elevation
Nice hike, with good views and climb.Though lots of flying insects and map def needs some updating, it does not show multiple trails on it, so it's very easy to take a wrong path or miss the right trail.
Deceptively challenging hike due to the rocky terrain. If you go past Black Mountain towards the Silver Mine you are rewarded with lovely views of the Hudson and NYC. We went a few days after a rain storm. Several areas were muddy and buggy. The water level was high so the runoff from the dam was very fast, making it difficult to cross around mile 4 (going counterclockwise).
Rocky start doing mountain biking.
I loved it. One of the best l’ve done. The 360 view from the top was awesome. And the tribute rock pile... very touching. Can’t wait to do it again.
Great Hike, Dry for the most part. Some mud on the stairs coming back down. Biker meetup at the Perkins tower at the top. Definitely use hiking boots with good grip and comfort.
Rocky great elevation
Difficult but fun. Trail could have better marked better towards the end.
Awesome hike! Some sections are hard but overall very fun. At the end the trail should be better marked and the alternate underpass is the right way to get back to the lot and not the road crossing on the busy 9W. Lots, lots and lots of bugs/mosquitos. Even if you halt for a moment, they swarm on your face. Almost the entire trail was like that. The 360 view from the top was amazing and made up for everything else.
Go on a weekday - weekends are crowded
Start anti-clockwise.. It was little muddy and too many bugs.. Mask recommended.. Shoes with grip is a must!! It's too crowded but worth the view..
We did the loop on Saturday afternoon clockwise, and it was few people on the trail. The last 1/3 part to the summit was quite challenging, not just because of the elevation, but also, I don’t know why, there was a looooooot of bugs/mosquitoes there. I had to power through to the top. Once I stopped for a moment to catch my breath, the army of bugs would be all over my face. They really pushed me all the way to the summit. Other than that it was a really fun trail.
Nice trail, but very busy.
Amazing
It was nice not too bad but it still gave me a workout
Ok so at first I read tons of reviews and almost didn’t come because people said it was so hard. I listened to reviews and went up major Welch and down the AT. It was so much fun and I think perfect for someone who wants to try and rock scrambles. Went with my 52 year old mom who is in pretty good shape but she doesn’t hike much. I hike a lot but I’ve only done one with rock scrambles (break neck ridge) and boy was that one rough. Id say this is an easier version. Still fun and challenging but nothing impossible if you just aren’t a couch potato!
Peaceful stroll right in the heart of Peekskill.
Great trail! For me, it was definitely difficult. The steep climb towards the top got my heart rate up! But 100% worth it. Love the view. Hiking along the water was pretty as well!
Fun and easy up the AT trail because its all stairs all the way to Perkin’s Tower. Took me about 2 hours with relaxing 30 minutes at the view. In terms of gear, just bring some good shoes with grip, water, and snacks.
Few people actually do the Walkway Loop as described in trail maps, because the crossing over the Mid-Hudson Bridge is alongside lots of vehicular traffic. Almost everyone just takes the Walkway Over the Hudson itself across and back.
As said, the South Redoubt is the real gem, and it is as easy an uphill hike you will find to see a view this spectacular. The trail may not have a lot of markers, but is easy to follow. We decided to hike further, as seen on the East Hudson Trail Map, to Yellow, then the Blue Loop, and the Purple to the red and back to the parking on Snake Hill. Warning, this whole loop is about 6 1/2 miles, the Purple is pretty technical and is definitely not as maintained. Would also advise downloading the map on Avenza, the Blu Dot came in quite handy on that part of the hike.
Love it
Great trail! A lot of features. Did the hike counter clockwise which we thought was the better route. Added the Brooks Pond loop to extend the hike.
