one of my favorite, favorite hiking trails. this trail is moderate, but that depends on what type of shape your in. there a lot of stepping up (onto rocks), and also stairs to climb up. i did not make it to peak because i have a slight fear of heights but you get an awesome view non stop. it really is one of the most rewarding hikes i have been on yet! just a bit scary at the very peak.

frankly, one of the highlights of my hiking career. Dogs carried their own water. Beautiful and tranquil.

Fantastic hike with several water crossings and quite a bit of semi-rock scrambling. Lightly trafficked so it’s wonderfully quiet. Definitely better to do after it’s rained recently, as the falls are fairly small. Not great for waterfall views but very strenuous and fun to rock hop across the streams.

Great hike - rocky hike up the side of a waterfall/creek for the first 1.75 mi, with several stream crossings, then about .25 miles of trail until you reach the fire road. Fire road is a little over 3 miles with good tree coverage and an old cemetery near the base. Went on a weekend and saw a total of 8 people on the trail. Took an 1:45 with minimal stops for water. With all the rocks and the stream crossings I was happy I wore my waterproof hiking boots, but I saw others wearing trail shoes and running once they hit the fire road.

the view at the top is well worth the hike

Trail is a steep incline but the relatively short distance to walk for a great view make this a great trail

We started this hike under a light drizzle. Not a problem as there is plenty of tree cover. It starts out straight uphill over roots, rocks and stairs. Gradual incline up to the fire trail and then straight up. Cannot comment on the view at all as Mother Nature opened the flood gates at the precise moment that we reached the peak. Our view consisted of a big fluffy cloud that blocked out everything. Nothing but fast moving water back to the fire trail. In the end the rain did not bother us and we met some great people on the trail. This one, although not the trail for a novice, will go in the record books for me.

This trail is challenging and invigorating. The view up top is absolutely amazing. My favorite time to go is during the Fall peak season, it is visually stunning.

hiked this trail last new years and it even snowed. loved the views from up there, a must hike

Great workout and beautiful views! Highly recommended!!

This trail is steep, but very well maintained and Rainbow Falls was a great reward for my 11, 10, and 8 year old hiking companions.

Nice easy hike for an afternoon outing. Stairs can be a little slick at the bottom.

I didn’t find this too strenuous even in the heat - I’d mark this “moderate.” Good view at the top with a nice breeze.

Great trail. Spectacular view.

i enjoyed the view!

Not as easy as some state. I am 29 and in good shape but saw many trying the trail and turning around. its not ling but the climb in elecation is fairly quick. It is 100% worth it if you can make it up!

This is a great hike. My partner and I have done it twice. Once in the winter and once in the late summer. My goal is to do this during the fall to see the leaves! The dog loves this place! Through hikers are always so pleasent... WATCH OUT FOR THE SNAKES!

Great trail, view is amazing, but a little too short for my taste.

Good hike to beautiful views of the falls and mountains. Well worth the time.

Great hike and decent workout. The only bad thing i would say is that parking at Jones Gap sucks. Make sure you get there early or you will be waiting a long time for a parking spot.

worth every step

beautiful hike. glad we dove the extra 2 hours to get there. one of the best views on the AT.

Challenging in spots with an amazing view for a payoff. Can get a bit crowded at the top.

Amazing hike, we hiked it on a rainy day but it was still a great time. I highly recommend for everyone!

Absolutely beautiful hike and location. This was my first hike in Virginia and it did not disappoint

Our hike was cut short because of the ever fickle recent August weather. I still managed to enjoy and take beautiful photos though. My friend who goes to VTech recommended this place and I was sold immediately after I saw the photos she took this past winter season. Will definitely come back to finish the hike and see the frozen falls next year.

Wonderful views. Can't wait to go back. Go early to beat some of the crowd!!

Good hike through the woods. I combined this trail with the Cook's Wall Trail for more mileage. Great views all around!

Great short hike with the upper cascades making it worthwhile. You can just view the cascades or get in the creek and play.

The Rock Garden Trail is a neat sensory type trail. Great paved surface!
