My pup & I took the trail clockwise. Wanted to get the steepest portion out of the way. I do feel like it was a good choice- going down the north side would have been unforgiving. However, the descending on the south side was pretty washed out with some decent exposure. At times I wish I had trekking poles- would definitely consider this hike moderate to advanced in its current condition. Also, trail was not well marked... when you get to the top there are many 4x4 trails you could accidentally take. Be sure to bring some sort of map with you to ensure you stay enroute. Happy hiking (:

Enjoy this hike and the beautiful views. It was hard for me because of all the stairs and steps this hike had but overall it was beautiful!

My favorite backyard hiking area! Easily end up with 15-20 miles. Coastal scenery is top notch, especially sunrise/sunset hikes. Lots of challenging hills to choose from. Great day hike

Got to the Muir beach parking lot at 9 on a Sunday and didn’t have trouble finding a spot. Hike is really worth the tough hills. Excellent views breezy and sunny on a good day. I took the coastal trail path way first- either way you are going to have lots of hills

Some nice coastal views towards the middle/hills but otherwise not that scenic

Quite an easy trail area with plenty of beautiful scenery and shaded parts for cooling down. Due to its proximity to the Pacific, the peaks can be very windy but refreshing so hold on to your hats when you reach any open high altitude areas. Some parts of the area allow pets, however this one DOES NOT ALLOW PETS.

Love this trail I live close so it’s great

Nice hike, with beautiful views but it is not easy. I’d rate it moderate.

Great views both east and west and there were several groups of wild horses. However, coming back down, the trail was prohibitively loose and slippery. Every step down was taken in constant worry of falling. The terrible last 1/3 of the trail made me wish I had chosen any other hike.

Really great hike! One of the best around. Only saw a few people on the trail and there is plenty of shade! We went in the morning and it was the perfect time. Saw some deer and a banana slug (watch out for them crossing the trail!) Most tourists do not usually hike and just check out the visitor center and around it. I recommend reserving parking in advance online, which is really all you have to worry about when going to Muir Woods.

I hiked this trail for the first time in January and was so inspired by the beauty, I hiked the loop a second time. Definitely tired after 2 loops, but followed it by a great meal at BooKoo in Mill Valley. I’ve returned three times since because the trail views are lovely. In the summer, the amphitheater is used for live theater so we planned a day around it: We watched Mama Mia and then hiked...very fun. I felt safe hiking it alone, but use your own discretion.

its rated as a mountain biking trail, lease be aware that you have to have and above average riding skill.

Mostly a walk to the beach (not much hiking). Make sure to take the stairs at the end to the top for a nice view of the beach and the greenery around!

There are so many trails; even though we follow the direction, we still got lost 3 times and had to trek back. At one point the trail showed on the map/GPS doesn’t exist. Wasn’t sure I was going to make it through; but I did, yay! We got some sun, fog, and rain, too during our hike. Was a great hike though - loved it.

Nice leisurely walk to Tennessee Beach, great side trails which we ended up doing the trail to Muir Beach the following weekend.

Nice crowd, nice restrooms too!

The part that goes from parking lot to Rodeo Trail is wrong— the path is covered in brush, unmaintained and impassable. I backtracked and went further along the road to get on the trail. After that it was good. Karl the Fog was in full effect. I got lost as usual. Couldnt run strava cos of battery drain but it feels like I ran at least 13.1

One of my favorite hikes in mount tam. Perfect level of difficulty with some steep climbs, gorgeous views, and it’s a loop trail.

Good close to SF exercise hike with good Pacific views.

Definitely felt out of the city with amazing views, took the South route but didn’t make it to the peak due to the trail being washed out.

Overall, the hike is beautiful that has a short climb in the beginning whether you stray as I did by hiking alongside Conzelman Road - or you stay with the trail by crossing Conzelman and pick up the trail across the street. Either way gets you to the same next stage of the hike.

When you get past the circle in the road, you’ll pass on the restrooms and hike for about a mile+ with an easy decline. Ultimately this will take you down to a road where you’ll turn left, cross the street and turn in opposite the horse stables. In about quarter mile, you reach a T where you’ll turn left. Shortly after that you’ll hike for about 2+ miles over a steady incline until you get to the last third of the hike and follow the ridge overlooking Sausalito. I hiked a bit further and had lunch sitting on the only bench on the trail overlooking both Sausalito and Angel Island.

I hiked in mid-July which is considered summer everywhere else but San Francisco and the Marin Headlands. Throughout my hike, the temp was 50-55ish with lots of fog and wind. Nothwithstanding, I recommend the hike and neighboring trails for the classic Marin Headlands experience. The views are breathtaking to locals and visitors alike!

Dogs are not allowed. We brought our dog, immediately saw signs that said no dogs, but took him anyways because we were already there and got a stern warning from a ranger.

Now I don't know whether to bring my dog or not - conflicting review says dogs are NOT allowed, above says yes allowed on leash. Hmmm

Dogs are not allowed on this trail.

Great hike and beautiful views! Beware of rattlesnakes though, there was one on the trail that wasn’t happy about us walking there.

GPS will take you right to parking area. there is no service once you start walking trail. really nice walk and the beach at the end is just GORGEOUS! doesn't feel like your in the bay area. blue water. make sure you do a TICK check before you leave.

Had a great time on this trail. It was our second time hiking and it was definitely a challenge but 100% worth it for the beauty.

We started off this trail towards Mt. Tam East Peak last Sunday. Great Hike despite the struggle, the steep stairs & rocky areas. It sure did kicked our butts but it’s all worth it once you get to the peak with the panoramic view of the city and the view above the clouds! It’s just so magical! Im definitely coming back!

Great for mountain biking not much for hiking.

Gorgeous! Can be pretty steep in some parts, but not too bad.
