Great trail of varying difficulty. Terrain varies. Only did 2 miles in but will go back to do the rest.

Excellent hike but very difficult. Our group had 8 kids ages ranging from 1-16. We had the 1 year old on our backs the whole time and the 3 and 4 year olds were able to do most of it without being carried. It’s was still challenging but extremely worth it but it was slow especially at the steep parts. It took us at least twice as long as expected. The views of the alpine meadow are unparalleled. Make sure to bring lots of water. Kids had a blast, but did do their fair share of complaining because of the length and difficulty.

Challenging for a first timer. Worth it. Took us close to 8 hours. Many people along trail to encourage you. Bring water. Rest a lot. Poles were great. My phone listed it as 9 miles up and back. Did have hail for a few minutes. Glad I had layers. Going down almost harder even though faster. Well maintained trail.

had a great hike! definitely a challenge for someone that just came up from KS, but doable for sure and the views are worth every bit of it! took me about 2hr and 15min. you’re pretty exposed so i would start early to avoid crowds and the warmer parts of the afternoon.

I would rate this Moderate Plus. Several tricky spots for younger kids and older folks.

Pretty crowded but the vastness of Quandary makes it okay. Up in 2 hours down in 1.5. Love this 14er.

it was a great 14'er to do by myself. nice class 1 at the beginning and then very rocky.

This is a really beautiful hike. The first 2 miles aren’t too brutal but there are definitely some steep climbing sections. The last mile is brutal as you climb over 1,000 feet of elevation, poles were really nice for thIs part! By the time we got to the top there was a cloud all around us so no great view but still rewarding for me. Going down was hard on my knees as it’s all shale.

Details: took us 3 up, 1 1/2 up. Drank 3L of water, and definitely needed a raincoat. We started at 5 am and got a nice parking spot and views of the sunrise.

FYI: we did see mountain goats on this trail which can get aggressive especially towards dogs, and if it does start to rain/thunderstorm shale, the rock the mountain is made of conducts electricity so highly recommend getting off the mountain as quickly as possible.

My phone showed 8.8 miles in total instead of 6 miles. Fairly easy 14er. Make sure you layer up and waterproof wears. There was a sleet shower and high wind at 10am for 30 mins while I was still ascending. It was freezing at the summit and even with decent gloves, my finger tips got numb. Packing a hand warmer would be a wise idea. Sun shined back on around 1pm though. Decent took less than 2 hours.

Great day hiking Quandary Peak. Lots of people on trail; clouds rolled by 10am with sleet/snow at the top. I think it is longer than 6 miles as my phone recorded that I walked 9 miles!

I’ve hiked this trail many times...nice moderate trail if you’re in good shape and acclimated to elevation. There is some decent rock scrambling coming and going to the second lake, where you need good shoes and solid footing. I wouldn’t take small children or out of shape friends to the second lake. We saw 19 mountain goats on the hike...a herd of 13 on way to second lake, which was spectacular! Also saw around 10 marmots sunning themselves on rocks along the trail. Please leash your dogs so you don’t spook the wildlife or get your dog injured!

Made it to the top in 2:50, back down in 1:40. We started around 7- there was a crowd but nothing unbearable, and we didn’t hit any storms. My boyfriend and I are both pretty fit, but we still found this hike really challenging! However, the struggle was worth it for the views at the top, and the trail was in good condition. Though it was definitely more than 6 miles, my watch measured ~8. Definitely a good choice for our first 14er, since it was out of our comfort zone but still manageable- we never felt like we weren’t going to make it to the peak.

I would rate this trail as difficult. Vail is already at 8150ft with this trail giving you a steady incline of +1000ft which was pretty rough on us coming from California coast only the night before. We went as far as the falls for this hike and took a lot of rest. I would say the very beginning is the steepest stretch, so don’t get discouraged when you start. There were a handful of flat areas a few meters long, with the valley opening being the longest. This area was a very beautiful view of the vegetation. For the falls you do need to cross two creeks but there are rock stepping stones, so your feet will not be submerged. A good portion of the path is rocky, so I’m glad we wore our hiking boots for this one.

I would say this is more moderate hard. the last mile or so was kind of difficult. the top is definitely worth it tho and there is another lake if you keep going. saw some mountain goats as well. cool waterfalls along the way. you can park right up by the trailhead which I recommend otherwise the first two miles is hiking along a dirt road.

Really enjoyed this hike! From the parking lot we ended up covering about 6 miles. The view from the top is worth the difficulty. If you have a 4wd you can drive up a good portion of the trail and take a few miles off the hike. Highly recommend this hike!!!

Second time up this trail. Beautiful hike with lots of things to see. Saw two mountain goats near the top this time. Lake is worth the extra hike to the top but is the most challenging stretch. Not much traffic on way up around 7am but pretty heavy coming down.

Loved this! I’d agree with the moderate description—trail is well marked though. There are quite a few large rocks and tree roots along the way so just take care, especially if it starts to rain. Views at the top are gorgeous though. Didn’t make it to the second lake due to weather but will for sure be back to finish!

Lots of boulders to scramble and hop over. Lots of shade and running water to enjoy. Watch out for moose and bears. This was a very enjoyable hike. High altitude, cooler temps, lots of lush forest and beautiful scenery. Most of the people that we met on the trail were really nice and chatty.

A little trail etiquette goes a long way. We were passed by a large group of hikers, blasting their favorite jam, along with three dogs running at top speed - obviously off-leash. One of the dogs almost knocked me off the trail and covered my legs with mud and dog hair. There was no acknowledgment from the hikers in the group or an apology. Not cool. Lets be considerate.

Probably the easiest trail around Vail. Very moderate incline and rewarding, beautiful views. If you're looking for an easy, pretty hike while visiting, I would pick this over Booth Falls! This trail is normally extremely crowded, but I went on a cloudy Friday evening around 5 PM, and there was only 1 other car at the trailhead. Please don't feel the wildlife and no there is no designated picnic area at the bottom.

Is there a picnic area at the bottom for lunch after?

My wife and I did this yesterday. Nice trail with wildflowers and great scenery. It is a combination of open fields of wildflowers and areas with large shady aspens. There were also some wild raspberries and blueberries (or possibly huckleberries) along the trail of which I munched on here and there. I would recommend hiking shoes as the trail can be rocky in places although I did see many folks in tennis shoes along the trail. There were several steep places where a trekking pole came in handy. I'm 63 and about 220 lbs and I find a single trekking pole helps balance and knees on the steps. My wife and I made it to the falls in 1 and 1/2 hours. I'm from a southern low land area but we've been here about 5 days to get somewhat acclimated to the elevation. While getting a bit winded at times, it wasn't that bad. Would do this again.

Absolutely AMAZING time hiking up Quandary on Sunday. After camping near Blue Lake just down the road, my girlfriend and I got started up the trail at about 6:20am. The trail had lots of friendly folks on it, but i never felt that it was overcrowded. I can honestly say, this wasn't easy. However we didn't feel it was extremely hard either. It was the perfect balance. Total roundtrip was just about 6 hours from the lower lot and that was with spending about 20-30 minutes at the summit. The Summit experience was very rewarding! So many people up top smiling, taking photos, and sharing stories. The hike down was extremely hard on my knees, but trekking poles made it a bit better.

Beautiful trail! perfect challenge for two sea-level-dwelling moderately fit people. the first two miles are a piece of cake, last mile is steeper and involves some light scrambling. We got there around 10 am on a Sunday and it was fairly crowded on the trail, but if you appreciate friendly fellow hikers and cute pups it's not a problem.

Great, challenging hike. You must go early to get a parking spot.

My husband and I arrived from Kansas City on Thursday and hit this trail on Friday. We had Quandary Peak on our Saturday agenda so wanted a scenic but reasonably high altitude hike to help us acclimate. This trail was very enjoyable with some moderately steep sections but lots of mild areas too. So many stunning views along the way. We found a ledge to rest at the top for a snack, and were greeted by a fat little chipmunk that shared our snack straight from my husband’s hand. Such a treat!

I tackled Quandary for the second time on Saturday. I’m a moderately active 38-year-old from Kansas City. We arrived in Summit County on Thursday, hiked Shrine Pass in Vail on Friday to warm up our legs and lungs, and then hit Quandary trailhead on Saturday morning at 5:45 am. Had no trouble parking in the lower lot, but cars were arriving regularly. It was a perfectly clear day - my husband and I reached the summit in about 4 hours. Last year it took me nearly 6 as I had no idea what I was getting into and almost quit several times. This year I prepared mentally and trained starting with using the stairclimber at least once a week since April, weightlifting once or twice a week, hill sprints, hiking mild hills with a weighted pack, lunges and box step-ups, and pushing and pulling a weighted sled. Additionally I used trekking poles this year which I did not have last year, and we brought a little can of oxygen we found at the grocery store. It was a much more positive experience for this flatlander and though it was still very difficult, I couldn’t stop smiling! The trail is intense and nearly straight up from the beginning with only a couple short flats. I think the ascent from 12k-13k ft (as well as the descent of this part) is mentally the worst as it takes a lot longer than you think this part will. But getting up to that 13k ft ridge provides amazing views and a nice rest before hitting the final steep ascent. We also got to see a mountain goat here, both on the way up and when we were headed back down, which was a highlight for me. The trail was very busy, as I expected from last year, but it was fun meeting people along the way as everyone was friendly and supportive. The last ascent to the summit is grueling and steep, rocks on rocks on rocks, and it’s difficult to see the summit most of the way so it feels like you are going nowhere for a long time. But reaching the summit was so exhilarating, especially after shaving a couple hours off my time from last year! Attitude is everything but proper training helps too, especially if you aren’t conditioned to the mountains! Even with trekking poles, I do think the descent was more difficult this year and took longer, but last year we got caught in a snow squall until we reached the tree line so that may have sped us up a bit! Also, both years I did this, my iPhone clocked over 10 miles, as opposed to the 6 on the description.

First 14ner . What an awesome experience. I trained for six months, with cardio. Swim spin and cycling. The reality being from Ohio is there is no way to prepare for the altitude. Everyone is going to be affected differently. I would say having enough water can’t be understated. I consumed 3 liters and wished I had more. The key is the summit is taking your time. As previously stated very loose rock at the top. The reward is at the summit. Enjoy it! The trip down is / equally challenging. Poles are a plus for stability. Your knees will thank you. I hiked this on 7/20, with an awesome weather day. Hazy in the morning, but cleared on the way down and it got warm. A week later they experience snow and hail. Always be prepared for changing weather regardless of the forecast.
I did have full cell service at the summit. None at the trail head.
