The trail has some gorgeous views and is well marked. It was pretty muddy and snowy which made some parts tricky but overall great trail!

A multi-faceted hike filled with waterfalls, swampy flat lands, and a very steep incline towards the end. The day wasn't the most sunny, but it was still nice weather. Still lots of snow up for about the last mile to the top. We thought we were going to turn back after the spectacular waterfalls but we kept going, and boy did it make us work for it. It isn't so much the incline, but it's the length. It tests your endurance big time, and I was very sore when I got to the bottom. About 10 miles in total. My friend and I did it in about 7 hours - moving at a leisurely pace with frequent breaks on the way up. Also includes a 20 minute break at the top. The views are incredible once you get to Windy Hill, but the top is somewhat anti-climactic since you can't climb the tower and there are no sweeping views because of many trees. We didn't see another hiker the entire day! Glad we had on boots and had poles. Very muddy in the middle sections.

Short trail, very dog friendly and almost no mud at all! Good views from the tower, nothing to see from the ground though. Road coming in is a little rough, just take your time.

The trail was lovely, it’s very wide and well kept. The hotel ruins were fun to explore and the view at the top is amazing! I also love that there were little trials off the main trail you could explore.

Beautiful hike! Definitely was happy to have waterproof hiking boots as there was lots of mud/water. We enjoyed some time at the summit with the beautiful views of Lake George. Took us about 4 hours to complete the loop.

Hike itself is okay - seems like the trail is an old road. View from the top make it worth it, though.

Very muddy and wet on 4/18 but worth the challenge. Great views!

We arrived at the trail and quickly realized we were vastly unprepared. A large snowfall happened days before and the snow quickly rose as we progressed through the trail, so we went from two inches at the beginning and it ended in six inches at the top. We lost the trail many times. We highly recommend micro spikes. Without micro spikes the trail becomes one of the levels of hell we were praying to escape. Would try the trail again without snow.

Hiked on 4/18 at 10AM. Great moderate/difficult hike in the ADK's. Creek crossings all manageable. Fairly steep most of the way. Easy to follow trail. Used microspikes on the last half mile as it was still fairly icy & snowy. Was manageable without spikes, but they helped keep up my pace. Still enough ice that you may slip a few times with regular hiking boots. Snowshoes not needed. Beautiful views at the top and an incredibly enjoyable hike. 2 hour total hike time for me as a moderate hiker.

Nice hike, trail was a little muddy but not terrible. Rained on the way up stopped raining at the top but the clouds stayed for the day. Worth the hike

First half of the trail is pretty dry, very rocky and steep. As you progress up, more and more snow was there. Very wet and melting fast. I had spikes with me but didnt really need them, I would recommend poles for the descent however because I basically had to slide down on the snow in sections. The summit has a couple decent lookouts, the overall Hunter "Lookout" on the alltrails map is somewhat obscured by trees. Would recommend to just go to firetower instead. Given the weather will be warm and sunny for the week following this post, a lot of the snow up top might be gone and in that case be just very muddy.

Great trail, some snow about half way up until the top. Other than that it was pretty dry.

Super quiet + peaceful! We didn’t go up to the fire tower, but we did a short loop after lunch and it was just right :)

Nice trail- and the views from the tower were pretty amazing! The tower was icy and as others have noted- no access to the cab. Biggest drawback was the access road, which was rutted, pot holed, muddy, and narrow. Not the worst I’ve seen, but not the best, either. Plenty of room in the parking lot.

HikingMuddySnow

This was an interesting hike. There was a lot of mud at the beginning. The elevation gain comes gradually over time, with a quick gain at the end of about 300 feet. I marked us at over 3,000 gain in total- much higher than all trails tells you. I had is at about 10 miles in total. We were met with about 6-8 inches of snow for the last mile. I'd suggest waiting to ensure the snow is melted before heading up. There were multiple beautiful waterfalls along the way and we enjoyed a beautiful colored blue sky with picture perfect clouds. With the snow on the trees it made for a beautiful day. Not one single other hiker the whole day!
