Fire Towers Map

Road to and parking lot are plowed. Trail is nicely packed, fire tower is in good condition and the views were spectacular! Enjoy!

Just went up and back on this trail. Snowshoes are definitely required as there is a lot of snow. Coming down is easy since the trail is essentially a toboggan run with very little sticks and branches and stones to get in your way. No view from the top unless you climb the tower but there are handrails on both sides and so we went all the way to the top. Note that the viewing room at the top of the tower and the cabin at the base of it will likely be locked

It was great hiking on snowy trails and very beautiful view along the trail and on the top from which you can see high peak regions and snow lakes.

Attempted 3/17/18. Trails are not fully broke so snowshoes are necessary right now. I’m >200lb so I break through a little easier but still pretty soft. I made it about 1/2 mike in and was just post-holing. Great trail for the distance I did it but stow is almost 20” deep and hasn’t been packed enough to travel without flotation.

solid hike did it mid march without snow shoes .... *dont do* but the hike was worth it great views from the summit if your trying to get a good photo go behind the fire tower

This trail is relatively short and easy compared to most other ADK towers. It was worth the hike. Check out my full write up along with pictures and things to look out for.

Hiked this today in the snow and it was a good hike. It gets steep at some spots but not too bad, definitely need micro spikes. Due to the snow, there was no visibility at the top but beautiful snow and ice crystals on the trees and fire tower. Definitely recommend.

Pretty tough and steep at times, came here with my boyfriend and our husky and made it to 3500 ft elevation before we decided to turn back because the ice made it super slippery and dangerous. Will be back in the warmer weather!

Did as part of the Tupper Lake Triad today. All 3 little mountains is just under 8 miles. Fun to do all 3 in one day. Very short hike 2.2 miles total. Great views from summit. There is a fire tower but if you do not like them you do not need to climb it to have good views. Look for the little benches to see great views.

Great trail!

The last of three for the day. Great climb. need spikes. There is a fire tower on top.

I LOVE this mountain. Absolutely wonderful Winter hike. I used microspikes but probably didn't need them. 45 degree day which was awesome. However, it was super windy & cold at the Summit. That was fine. This was my third Summit in under 24 hours (Rattlesnake & Poke-O before it). Amazing way to wrap up things up!

I did Rattlesnake just before Poke-O. It ended up being tougher than my previous hikes here. I had to navigate up a huge wall of ice in my microspikes. I hit the Summit right at sunset. I headlamped it out and bushwhacked around the ice wall on my way down (no problem). A nice day of elevation gain.

This is a nice quick local hike that’s nice and easygoing. This was a great winter hike that I enjoyed. There were a lot of animal tracks that we saw while hiking.

Trail is almost entirely melted after today’s weather ! It was a beautiful hike .. you don’t need spikes anymore unless the temperatures drop again. Will be going again soon

Beautiful hike to an abandoned hotel and a fire tower worth climbing. It’s definitely uphill but we did it with a chihuahua and he was fine!

Great hike!!! Easy, but fairly long trail. views on top r stunning!!!

Trail is in pretty great condition but spikes are a must ! With the warm temperatures there were some very slippery spots !

Easy walk, as prior reviewers said. If you are doing the fire tower challenge, it is the easiest trip. Nice view of the High Peaks to the west and a bit of Lake Champlain to the east

Started great, takes you straight up. Very icy! Definitely need crampons and an ice axe. My husband and I were using our micro spikes. Got close to the summit but unfortunately didn’t get to reach it. Decided to turn back as we felt it would’ve been unsafe. Lots of slipping and sliding lol BUT we will be back

The parking lot was like a frozen pond. all of the thick ice was covered by fresh snow so I didn't know until I tried to stop and kept going. Luckily I was able to carefully turn my car around and there was traction on the one side of the parking lot. The cell service is spotty so I don't know if I would have been able to call for a tow truck. The mountain was the same way. Some parts looked like a frozen waterfall(not a bad thing). I had ice spikes so it didn't slow me down. My dog had some trouble but it gave me a few laughs. Overall the hike was short but rewarding. The only downside was all the graffiti on the cabin and the tower. It's sad that people can't respect the property for other people to enjoy.

I snowshoed this last year after we got a huge snowstorm. The parking lot wasn’t plowed and when I got out of the truck the snow was almost to my knees. This was my very first fire tower and my first time snowshoeing up a mountain. The hike up seemed to never end. Once you reach the fire tower the wind was bizarre! I was amazed by how many surrounding towns you could see from it and there’s a nice little map in the tower to tell you. I would hike it again when there’s not so much snow.

Steep portions have turned icy with the brief thaw/freeze. Micro-spikes worked fine on the way up, switched to crampons for the descent. Enjoyable hike. Summit was bare (no snow/ice). Had the mountain to myself until the return trip when I passed 2 other hikers.

This was such a great adventure!! Please bring micospikes. At least for no anyways .

Views are great but tower is closed .

Easy walk, it wasn’t too icy today. Beautiful view from the tower.

Sunday January 21, 2017: Parked at Mill Brook Rd at around noon, a very pleasant and steady uphill climb in snowy, sunny and warm conditions. I would say the last .75 miles is where your gain most of the elevation, and, the balsam forest on top is very nice in a few inches of new snow. This is a good and relaxing walk up to the fire tower. Was back at the Parking lot at 4 pm, I walked down with a fellow hiker.

Note that the entrance on Beaver Kill Rd may be somewhat difficult to access in some cars. It turns into a seasonal road and the snow maintenance is spotty. But the drive down that road is beautiful on its own.
Anyway, I just did this hike with 2-3 inches of snow on the ground. It's a little steep in some places but very manageable. The trail is beautiful overall, there's a spring and a lean-to toward the top of the mountain, and the fire tower view is spectacular. Also, the dense pine forest at the top of the mountain is straight out of a fairytale, something that needs to be seen in the snow.

A very busy trail, but worth the crowds!! A steep climb here and there which makes it a fun challenge. Climb the fire tower and enjoy the wild flowers at the summit.

It’s a bit of a bumpy drive on a dirt road to get to the trailhead, but worth it!! You won’t see many hikers on this trail because it’s not easily accessible. But, that’s the cool part. There’s remnants of a small plane crash 3/4 of the way up. Climb the fire tower and take in the view! A great hike!!
