difficult but worth the view!

This is a great hike. My partner and I have done it twice. Once in the winter and once in the late summer. My goal is to do this during the fall to see the leaves! The dog loves this place! Through hikers are always so pleasent... WATCH OUT FOR THE SNAKES!

Beautiful scenery, challenging hike, wonderful views.

worth every step

beautiful hike. glad we dove the extra 2 hours to get there. one of the best views on the AT.

Challenging in spots with an amazing view for a payoff. Can get a bit crowded at the top.

I’ve been hiking this for almost 30 years. It is one of my favorite hikes and different every time. The view at the top makes it all worth while.

Did this with my daughter on my back. She weighs 34 lbs so it was a little more difficult. the trail is rocky at times. very steady incline untill you cross the fire road towards the end. this is where the trail begins to be more of an incline. i believe this is where most of the challenge is. the air gets thinner a little bit. the scenery at this point is amazing. once you get to the top there are multiple ledges to grab a great view from. on the way back if you take the fire road it is much simpler and easy. very wide path and still some great scenery. not to crowded if you hit it in the early am.

I was concerned about getting lost after reading reviews. Not sure how people got lost. There are signs everywhere. This was an amazing trail. The waterfalls are beautiful! Very peaceful fun hike. I even saw purple, bright orange and bright yellow mushrooms! I’ve never seen a purple mushroom or yellow and orange mushrooms that were so vibrant. Highly recommend this hike. When you come to first cascade, continue to walk over bridge and up many stairs to reach the waterfall.

Beautiful hike, lots of rain the last couple of weeks so the falls were roaring. Moderate is an accurate assessment. Hiked it with my wife and our two granddaughters. Girls complained a little but not to much which rates this as a good family hike. will differently hike it again when in the area.

Nice trail, well maintained, and nice views at the top. It was a bit crowded with multi-day hikers, experienced Day hikers, and tourists who don’t hike regularly. I was a little disappointed with the “iconic” aspect of this view — for me it didn’t quite live up to the hype.

Fun, short hike. Started early on a weekday morning and ended up having the entire top to myself. Clear day, great views, and light breeze.

Hiked this with a friend after a week of heavy rain and the falls were incredible! The trail was waterlogged and a little difficult to navigate at points, but overall still a beautiful hike. Crabtree is one of my favorite hikes in central VA.

The falls were amazing! There is another viewpoint, although not as close, at Gentle Trail (very short, easy walk on opposite side) that features a 'storybook forest' for kids.

It seemed very busy all day (Saturday), so we stopped at 1830. It emptied out by then with over half the parking spaces remaining. If stairs don’t bother you, it is easy- a walk and not a hike. Take your camera for many photo opportunities along the boardwalk!

My family and I enjoyed this trail. However, it is difficult in terms of physical exertion (coming back out). I counted 822 steps on the way out (there are different numbers floating around tho). There are also a few other sets on the trail that would add to that number. If you’re a history buff, you’ll enjoy yourself at the bottom. If not, you may not care as much. We LOVED the nostalgia of walking where miners did almost 100 years ago. At the bottom of the trail, if you take a right, you can see the old coke stove ruins. They are very neat. To the left at the bottom of the trail, you can see the old power house, tipple, and processing plant. Before you start the steps down (after coming out of the woods), you can see the entrance to the old mines on the left. I would recommend this trail to anyone that likes history who is in decent shape. As mentioned above, coming back out is very demanding. Happy hiking!

steep trail, beautiful at the top

A bit of a disappointment. There really isn't much to see at the bottom of the steps. At the bottom of the steps are two collapsed buildings and a short metal structure. There are no trail markings indicating where to go. However, if you go to the right and follow the path (carefully) it will lead down to a row of coke ovens over a football field long. If you haven't seen coke ovens before, they are pretty cool. You can view them up close. There are also some signs explaining the area on the way down. Other than that, there's not much to see. I did encounter several people using the trail for fitness/exercise. One guy preparing for an iron man event. Yea, this trail is that tough. At the top of the steps is a carving in the railing indicating 813 steps. However, there are even more steps before you get to those. Plus, a decently steep trail that leads down to all of this. Is the trail worth doing? If you are in decent shape, yes. If for no other reason, do this trail for the bragging rights.

great views of the waterfall. well maintained trails.

The falls are so pretty. I have been here multiple times. The falls are different every time. I have seen them frozen over in December, and roaring after a healthy rainfall.

I have hiked the trail numerous times, there is more to Mcafee's knob than the ledge. Hell's kitchen is fun to wonder around, and if you follow through hell's kitchen to the power line, there is a pointed rock that is fun to climb at the power line clearing. I spent more time away from the overhang and enjoy what's around the whole area.

Beautiful views all the way up the trail! View from the top was nice and had a small area if you want to sit and enjoy the view! Pretty steep incline but worth it! Work out with a view! Loved it

Me, my husband and our 3yo goldendoodle did this hike on July 28th. The hike up the falls was simply stunning and we took full advantage of the rest areas to enjoy the scenery. The view from the top was absolutely gorgeous and decided to continue on to Crabtree Meadows, the AT and then back down. If you have time, I highly recommend adding the extra miles to round out the hike.

The falls are beautiful! I come here every year with my family and little dog and we love it. The stairs can be a workout but aren't too bad. The falls are well worth it.

Very enjoyable out-and-back. The sites are worth the effort. We visited in July however, the shade of the canopy kept the hiking cool. I reviewed the history of the area after the fact however, I recommend that you do so in advance of your hike. It will make more sense. I can only assume that a spring or fall hike would allow you to see more of the sites artifacts when the ground cover is not as plush.

Loved this hike, The view at the top is amazing. But the bugs at the top were INSANE. Never seen such a swarm of them in my life.

We did the Apple Orchard trail, Cornelius creek and a little part of the AT. At one point we got turned around. All in all we hiked 8 Miles. My husband and I did it with our two small children aged 7 and 5. Climbing back up to the car was a little workout. Definitely beautiful scenery and the falls on Apple Orchard trail are very nice. Perfect for a picnic

First time ever doing this hike and I loved it! Definitely worth it!

I agree with the moderate designation. There were a good amount of inclines towards the end which could be challenging for those not physically fit. There were some beautiful views, a lot of it was wooded, and a few streams. We never came across the wading pool that’s mentioned in some of the other reviews. I don’t know if it was due to low water levels or if it just doesn’t exist. All in all a great hike. Would recommend.
