Pros: 70% shade
Cons: no signage, manure everywhere, no cave access— walked by 3 times, but never found, no good views.

Great trail with great views. Not too heavily trafficked on a Friday morning. Down by the river I got to watch the train from Durango to Silverton come by. The return hike is tough as its mostly uphill, but altogether a real fun hike. It took me maybe 4 hours with 20 minutes spent by the river.

Beautiful lake - the trail could use some better markings - it is easy to wander off but overall a good portion of shade and relatively flat.

Beautiful view and moderate level of difficulty.

Did this end of July 2018. Great views. Very little traffic. As previously stated, the grind from the bottom is a bit strenuous but a great challenge. My dog also loved the stream at the bottom.

Trail is very pleasant but could have better markings. Great for day hiking with family or pets.

Was the starting point for an all day adventure! Great trail, moderate and transversed in high gear for some and low around obstacles. Super views.

Very nice trail. Difficult to navigate. Lots of beautiful scenery, a couple waterfalls, cool mining site. Lots of shade. Worth the trek. This is also a horse trail so watch out for horse poo.

We did this walk with kids (both under 10) and found it fairly easy. Most of the trail is nice - unremarkable - but nice enough. The sections along the creek are pretty and the trees provide a bit of shade on a hot day. The kids also liked the old mine and other remains along the trail.
We did not do the section that over looks the lake.

Pretty hike but it’s pretty much downhill from the trailhead and you can hear the highway for most of the hike.

Go early, trail gets crowded. Beautiful wildflowers.

awesome views going down into the valley. hike back up is a bit arduous but not bad. i only encountered one other group. this is one of my favorites so far.

We only went 3 miles up and back down, but it was so beautiful!!! Lots of wildflowers and beautiful views of the mountains !

Shady trail. The first part is great because you hike near a creek and come across an old mine. Trail isn’t marked well so it was a bit hard to navigate. Bring your lunch and enjoy it overlooking the lake!

Great hot weather hike! Very serene with some short interval hills. Much of the hike is tree covered for great shade.

This is a very well maintained downhill hike with wide switchbacks covering most of the descent. I really enjoyed the first section with the long range views, but at least 3/4 of the hike is in the interior of the forest with very little views until you reach the river. My dog did enjoy a swim once we got there! The climb from the bottom got a little monotonous, but no section was ridiculously intense. It took me 3 hours round-trip with a couple shorts rests coming back up.

Great day! 1st Mile and half on the way back are the most strenuous, say a 7 of 10.

Another special hike up this great trail through a sea of Wildflowers.

We hiked this trail the first week in June, 2018. It was amazing. Epic views.

Great view from the top!!

Gorgeous hike! The trail was bone dry. Incredible views and you can get right up to the railroad and see the train pass.

Fabulous hike and well worth the 9.5 miles to the camp ground and back. Views of the river are amazing

Easier than we expected. Amazing views. It took us just over 4 hours round trip. No snow on the trail. Not too wet or muddy either. The mileage was spot on.

Once we crossed the Highway heading west there was a lot of snow and mud on the trail. Little Molas was still partially frozen, but the trail is doable.

Loved this trail! Perfect if you’re looking for a simple day-hike. Only negative is the trail isn’t marked very well, in my opinion. We will definitely be back.

Not marked well

Very good hike for our first Colorado hike. The altitude was an obstacle, but we managed. The dogs loved it, especially the stream down at the bottom. Would like to do this again when the trail is dry and no snow. Trail is rocky in some areas. Very nice views of the mountains.

The views from this trail are incredible! Hiked on 4/29/18 in mostly sunny weather with high winds. Was the only one on the trail for five hours. While Molas Lake itself was still frozen, the trail was 95% dry except for thick mud leading from the trailhead and patches of snow in shaded woody areas. The downhill views and Animas River are well worth the return climb.

Very difficult with snowshoes, but worth the effort. I didn't see a single person out and back, just a lot of wildlife tracks. Including big kitty. Navigating is very tricky because of the snow, so I brought my GPS watch + compass and it worked out fine. Bring an Ice axe, as some of the switchbacks can be deadly if you take a fall.
