beautiful overlooks
Great hike. It is mostly downhill down there and uphill back out. The uphill is only tough in 2 areas so for anyone reading the reviews it is not as bad as it sounds. If you are new to hiking you may need to take a couple breaks on the way out. The view is totally worth it.
Muddy but beautiful!
Downhill all the way, not too bad but the rocks can mess your ankles up! Wouldn’t recommend if its raining/ just rained because it’ll get super muddy and at some points you’ll have water flowing downhill which sucks if you tend to slip easily. Uphill is tough but with breaks in manageable! Bring lots of water and take caution on bluffs! We could not finding parking at the lot so we parked across the street for 5$- cash only!
Great trail! Nice incline up. Beautiful views at the bluff!
Challenging when you add Hemmed-in Hollow to the hike, but awesome. If you want to do both and are up for a challenge, download this map under recordings, 4/11/2021. A little over 12 miles and over 1900 ft of elevation Two wet crossings.
Nice and quiet on o Monday in April. Bit hot already, so take enough water if you go in summer.
Great trail! The views are worth the length of the trail!
Hike down to the bluffs and there are a few good spots to stop for a break/snack. The hike back to the parking lot is straight up almost the whole time.
A friend and I did the trail on April 10th, which was my second attempt (we ran out of time in November). I would advise waiting until closer to summer to try this trail! Firstly because the summit is currently closed due to construction of a new gift shop at the top - currently, hikers are only able to make it to mile 18 until after May, and construction has been occurring on weekends as well. Secondly because the trail itself is completely covered (unsurprisingly) - when we went most recently, we had to follow someone else's tracks and, after following an unusual route for several miles and seeing multiple pairs of tracks, realized that no one seemed to know where the actual trail was. I always carry trail tape, which we were thankful to have (and took down on our way back). Had it not been for that, we would have had a very difficult time finding our way back through treeline. Above treeline, the path is pretty easy to follow. It was in the 30s and windy at the top, but by the time we were heading back, everything was pretty slushy (we started around 7 am). We didn't end up needing to use snowshoes, but would have if the weather were any warmer. Microspikes were needed for most of the trail when we went. I agree with previous comments that the way up is much better than near the top. At Devil's Playground, there was a swarm of tourists that had driven up and the views themselves were nothing spectacular. If you're looking to cross it off your list, then I would wait until after May. If you're just looking for a tough hike, I would try something else unless you're quite experienced or have a great sense of direction. Good luck!
Beautiful trail!! Definitely worth the hike back up. Stay right at the split to walk goat trail if you follow goat trail it brings you down to the river “which I found out after turning around”. Go left at the split to see the waterfall.
Great hike. Top notch views at the end!
Hard. Awesome. If you only want 11ish miles, stay to the right on the loop.
Great hike. You can go a bit further on the bluffs than what shows on the All Trails map, but if you go past the bluffs to the woods above, the trail quickly fades away and you have to bushwack or go back to the bluffs. Save the trouble and stay on the bluffs back like you came in.
I just wanted to ask a couple questions. are they substancial eater sources along the trail or do you have to carry all your water. thinking on making it in two days. how are the campsites? any bear boxes?
The trail wasn't difficult and the views are beyond amazing. Please be mindful of the steep offs and stay safe.
Compared to other trails in the area this one was poorly maintained and lacked clear signage. But the views are great when you get to the end.
Gentle but steady downhill on the way out. Take the right about 3 miles in to go to the goat trail bluffs/cliffs. Killer river views and great little cave/alcoves to eat lunch at. Those gentle downhills feel less gentles as uphills on the way out but it’s pretty and not awful by any means. 10/10
This trail is beautiful but the views on the way up are definitely better than the summit. The construction diminished the traditional “summit” feel but it was still beautiful. Beware to anyone hiking this trail while the weather is cold at night and warm during the day(spring). The trail was packed in nicely the morning I hiked it and by the time I was returning, I was wading in a waist deep slushy of snow. Suggestion to bring snow shoes for that reason only or to start super early(I started at 630am). Otherwise, no other special equipment needed right now, just watch the weather. Enjoy the hike!
Beautiful trail, nice path. Deff want to come back and do more. Just ran out of time.
most amazing views!! downhill in & uphill out, so be prepared!
