WARNING: As of April 6th 2021, the forest road to the trailhead is impassable to all vehicles, 4x4s & Side x Sides, short of snowmobiles and snow oriented ATVs. Attempted to boot the remainder of the several miles from my parked 4x4 to the TH, but ultimately called it and decided to turn back as I was post holing up to my knees, which proved to be too energy intensive and time consuming. I also attempted another hike in the area earlier in the day, so it was already getting too late to summit. I passed an F-150 that decided to turn around about 2 miles in, and had to personally recover two 4x4 Jeeps with tow straps as they got stuck in the feet of snow that there is on either side of the ruts. If you do not have a high ground clearance vehicle with off-road tires, you WILL bottom out and get stuck. Per my recording, the start location is the best place to stop, as there is enough of a turn around spot to not get yourself into too much trouble (especially if hiking solo). If you plan on doing this hike anytime within the next month or so before the snow melts, start early and prepare to boot it in deep snow for roughly 15-20 miles (round trip). I'll be back in the summer to complete this hike, and provide a proper review!

As of April 5: So if you’re driving a sedan you’re looking at a 15-16 mile round trip. I started at 3:20 am, got to the trailhead around 6, and to the top around 7:15. I saw a 4 runner parked 4 miles from the trailhead. Play it safe there’s barely any turnarounds and the road goes from heavy ice to dirt to heavy ice again. 3 miles from the trailhead the ice is insane I don’t recommend going past it. YOU NEED SNOWSHOES! (Crampons are also recommended. It’s pretty icy at the top) Microspikes are only good up until 1 mile before the trailhead. The trail itself is nonexistent literally just book it to the top. Careful not to get lost going downhill cause it’s really steep on the sides. No wildlife at the lookout. Most beautiful view I’ve seen, you could see up to Mt. Hood!

This is a five star trail, but absolutely inaccessible if you’re driving anything other than a 4WD truck or something similar (right now). My midsize sedans has AWD but high centered on snow. There were a lot of stuck cars. I definitely wasn’t anticipating that much snow to be there in April.

Short but very rewarding! Use of the ropes that are already in place on the way to the bottom is a must. Otherwise, I would have likely slid down with all of the loose gravel and dirt.

The road is plowed up to 5 miles before trailhead. Altima made it just fine. Didn’t have enough time to do the trail though. Will be back in a month.

Very large tree blocking the road about 3.5 miles up forest service road. Unable to drive any further.

It was extremely windy yesterday so I didn't feel comfortable taking the full loop, but there were some brave enough to do it. Instead, I walked over the plateau and down the north side along the river. I still didn't venture out past the warning sign to the point. The gusts were just crazy yesterday. Lots of people. More than I expected. Lots of graffiti as well. Saw several used diapers tossed in the bushes along with dog bags, etc. All this distracted from the hike, but it is a beautiful area and an impressive sight.

A bit hard due to the slopes to the waterfall but the rocks give a good grip.

Really nice trail. There are some spots that are muddy but nothing too bad. There was a lot of people on the trail but most wore masks and it was easy to maintain distance.

I rate this as a not so difficult hike. It was pleasant. Some steep slopes going down towards the river and on top of the waterfall, but the rest was not difficult.

We made it to the turnoff in our jeep and hiked the extra 2.5 miles to the trailhead. We ended up hiking 8.8 miles total. Micro spikes and trekking poles were helpful. We brought snowshoes but didn’t end up using them. There were huge cornices around the lookout so be extremely cautious at the end! Beautiful Rainier views! Love this hike!
