Trail somewhat uneventful, but great views made it worth it! Not too strenuous of a hike.

Good if you want to do a high peak without a ton of hiking in and ease of access. Snowshoed up cascade in March, was pretty cold at the top and it ended up being too blustery for good views, so we skipped Porter. Will probably do again in nicer weather.

I had the mountain to myself on this particular morning. There was plenty of granular snow on the trail given the persistence of winter weather we've been having in mid April. There were some icy spots on the way up but nothing that poles and microspikes couldn't handle easily. The summit of Cascade was extremely windy and the cloud cover obscured all views so I didn't spend much time at the top of either peak. Had a blast with some controlled slides and running on the descent. Started at the registry at 5am and was back at the car by 7:20.

We arrived at the trailhead at 9 am. We were equipped with poles and microspikes, both of which proved to be crucial in making it to the top. The trail was covered in compacted snow with many ice patches. We did not need snowshoes at any point - the microspikes handled the ice patches easily. The steepest ice patch occurred about 25-30 minutes from the peak of Cascade. We chose to hit Porter before summitting Cascade. The trail was not very well marked on the way to Porter from the junction on the Cascade trail. We were able to follow the previous tracks of a few hikers who had already made it to Porter, but even without tracks the trail isn’t too hard to see. We weren’t sure if we had made the summit of Porter because it is just small clearing surrounded by trees. Only after venturing about two tenths of a mile past the summit did we confirm that we had reached the summit. Next we summitted Cascade, which was bare and very windy with amazing views. It took us about three and half hours to get from the trailhead to the summit of Cascade with Porter included. The hike back back down only took about an hour and fifteen minutes. Overall the hike was moderately strenuous, and very enjoyable.

Did it with my son last October.Rain and fog made for limited visibility but still worth the trip.Hit RockyPeak Ridge while there.Clearing skies made for outstanding fall views.

Saturday was a perfect day for Phelps- low 30s and blue skies. I used my spikes, although I saw plenty of folks with snowshoes. The last mile is a straight incline. There were small sections of ice, but it wasn't bad. Overall, a wonderful hike with a great view!

Lots of ice. Did the whole hike in crampons. Took about 6 hours with stops and 1/2 hour at the peak.

Still lots of snow lingering on the trail, but microspikes were sufficient as we haven’t had new snow in quite a while. Cascade was a large, epic, open summit and Porter was just a clearing on a ridge line. I would suggest tagging Porter first, then coming back and going up Cascade and taking a break up there. Windy once you reach the rocks on the summit push, but from there it’s only a few minutes to the top. Snow is still pretty deep, so watch out for postholing in the warmer afternoon weather. Took about 3.5 hours to hit both summits, take a break, and come back. (March 28, 2018)

Started at 1030am - lots of people so snow spikes were best since the snow was so packed down. The Lady and I bought two snow hiking sleds from LL Bean last month and finally tried it out on these two - it was SUPER awesome! Probably 75% of the downhill descent from the split was by bum sled! If anybody has ever thought of doing it, this trail was PERFECT for sledding down (carefully though!). Best first high peaks experience ever!

Great view! Totally worth it.

Is this trail open for hiking now? March 2018?

Started 9am at trailhead and it was -4 degrees, about 15 when we returned. Trail was packed down really well but still wore snow shoes all they way until reaching summit where we switched to crampons. Summit of cascade was very windy with strong gusts but clear blue skies and sunny. Couldn’t be up there longer than 5 min with wind chill. Headed to porter where the views were just as spectacular with heavy snow on trees. Less wind on porter. Used snow shoes all the way down back to trailhead by 3pm. Winter hiking a LOT more physical than expected but well worth the experience and views.

Broke the trail in snowshoes. Worthwhile to be up there in the snow. I think it took an hour and a half at most. Took my time at summit. Highly recommend.

Difficult climb chose to do it the other day after a snowstorm. The hike was beautiful with the snow covered trees but unfortunately we had zero visibility at top but we still enjoyed the loop. Would like to revisit in the summer!

Hiked this back in August. It was my second high peak hike, so it was a long, rough day. The way up was uneventful, but still relatively steep and difficult. Summits were rainy and foggy with no views. It started pouring on the way down, making the one major section of steep rock pretty dangerous.

Trail was heavily trafficked with very friendly people. Took us about 8 hrs total. Highly recommend trekking poles (we didn't have them), your knees will thank you later.

Went 12/21/2017. Couldn't ask for a better first winter hike.

Sunny, 0° at the trailhead. Snow was too packed to use snowshoes. Summit was icy, didn't have microspikes but we did ok taking our time and jamming our trekking poles in the rock gaps. Summit was also crazy windy, about -15° (got a headache in the side of my face from the cold) but worth it for the 360° views you get at the top.

Did both Cascade & Porter in about 6 hours total, all 3 of us are in decent shape in our early 20s. Great views, rewarding hike, ate our fill in Placid afterwards.

This is a great day hike! I hiked both peaks 2/17, and the conditions were perfect. The snow was packed well enough to both peaks that I only used micro spikes. As others have said it's gusty at the top so bring an extra layer if you want to spend time up there! If I were to change anything, I would have brought trekking poles. Some sections of the descent were a bit hairy, and I fell on my butt a few times. I also would have gotten there sooner. I checked in at 3:05 PM. Knowing that I was battling daylight, I ran a good bit of the trail when it was level. Total time was 2 hr 24 min with about 10 minutes at the top of each peak. If you want a more comfortable pace, plan on 3.5-4 hrs. My GPS counted it at 5.9 miles round trip.

This was so much fun to do with our family! I gave it only 3 stars for two reasons. One, it was almost a half hour before we could find the actual trail. We parked near the local tubing drop off/pick up site is and then there are many campsites and what look like hangout spots. There is a small gravel road back to more parking, which leads to some camping spots and then the trail back. Look for that dirt/gravel road back to find the trail. Secondly, the trail in was gross. Trash everywhere, piles of old dog bags near picnic tables, clearly not maintained. It was also clear it was a party spot, which I am always nervous to bring children to. Once at the slide it was awesome. We had hours of fun, spots were like mini pools where the kids could play and swim, just a neat spot. People had brought tubes and were sliding down parts of it. I would recommend but just be prepared, wish people would take care of the world a little better.

Girlfriend (23) and I (22) are in decent cardio shape but don't get to do many big hikes often. Took us 3h40m of moving time going at a very leisurely pace up and a brisk walk down. 4.5 miles total. We went in mid February so there was a good amount of snow and the entire trail was covered with ice, less so at the summit.

Parking is a little confusing as it's right along the road. There are spaces off to the side though. I think we saw 3 little parking areas. The start to the trail can be missed but it's at the middle space and there are signs once you start. The trail is nicely marked the entire way.
This hike gets steep at some points but doesn't throw anything too crazy at ya. Balanced by flatter areas give you nice breaks. Pack water and some snacks as always.

We were bold and did not use any spikes--just regular hiking boots. Spikes definitely would have helped but going slow and using some sweet maneuvers there was enough space to sneak around the tricky parts and make it all the way up.

The wind was brutal at the top, had to hunker down so I wouldn't blow away. Under armour, t-shirt, and a wind breaker was fine for top. Wore shorts under insulated pants for bottoms. Hat and gloves are a must if you want to reach the peak. It was right around 30°F the entire day and we were lucky enough for the clouds to break and get some nice sun about half way through.

We decided not to hit Porters, which adds another .7 miles out then another back. You get there towards the top of Cascade trail.

All around a great day!

Loved this hike! Went at the end of January , high 30’s and it was perfect. I used my spikes and my boyfriend used snowshoes. The view from the top was beautiful along with some great views as you are reaching the summit. The first three miles is an easy walk but the last mile is fairly challenging. Really enjoyed this hike, my only suggestion is leave early so you can hit tabletop too!
