Beautiful, snowy day this morning. We made it to the first lake without snowshoes, but snowshoes would have been helpful. The snow was pretty well-packed for most of the way but sunk in a few times.
Great hike. Didn’t need snowshoes or microspikes. Most people had masks. Most dogs were off-leash.
Went Saturday 1/23 and it was beautiful. A bit crowded on the trail toward at Lower Lake but it was a perfect winter day. We had micro spikes which were all you needed except a couple icy spots. Snowshoes would be overkill. Upper lake was worth going to as there were less people. I’m looking forward to going back!
1/23/21 Icy in spots hard packs snow snowshoes not required spikes / crampons would have been sufficient moderate traffic in and out
Great moderate trail for families ... We did not need snowshoes. Crampons, spikes will suffice. Was able to walk onto the lake & take pix. Since it was a weekday, TH was empty & less than a dozen hikers on the trail. P.S: Rookie mistake: We stared out on the Frog Lake TH & thought we could 'connect' to the Twin Lakes trail, by 'walking' across to the other side!!!. We had GPS(es) and supplies; never in trouble; but a lot of inconvenience. D'fntly an adventure & some stories. Big big mistake that cost us about an hour. Once we got on, good times. Peeked @ Mt. Hood.
Rather busy on a Saturday but hikers/snowshoers/ and cross country skiers were all respectful. The trail itself did not warrant snowshoes, micro spikes sufficed, but around the lakes they were definitely a fun bonus to tread through the deeper snow. Overall it was a lovely hike and getting to escape into a little winter wonderland is always appreciated.
