The parking lot is pretty slippery. I attempted the hike, but had to abort after 1.2 miles in because the snow was falling pretty good and I didn't want my truck to be stuck the next morning. That said, it is a pretty hike in the snow. If you are thinking of accomplishing this hike this time of year, I suggest chains and 4 wheel drive (of which, I have neither (yet)).

Seemed that the trail is a lot longer than noted on the map so be prepared with extra water and snacks. We hiked during a smokey day from nearby fire so could be it was a bit more difficult to breathe that day. Lake is surrounded by volcanic geology so not the typical sierra granite style lake. Eagles nest in the cliffs so you might get to see them fly over the lake if you are lucky!

This is a favorite of mine, always chances for beautiful pictures. I will keep coming back to this one!

Very nice well marked trail. Pretty much all uphill on-way but nothing too hard. Very pleasant scenery. Would be awesome around october because of all the aspen trees. Although I hiked it, it would be a nice beginner MTB trail. Some rocks at the beginning you could walk but a good trail without death cliffs. :)

Overall the trail was in great condition. There was some ice, but nothing too bad. My ~16 lb dog completed it with me and had no trouble.

It was a great hike. We thought is was more like 9 miles. nice and shady. grant views of cable lake and emigrant lake was awesome. had a lunch at lake then headed back. we felt it was moderate skill.

I’ve hiked this in the snow and in the fall colors. Both were beautiful hikes. I made it to the top lookout (just past the hoodoos) but have never continued on. It’s a somewhat easy hike. I’ve only been on weekdays and only seen a few other people which makes it nice and quiet.

This was an excellent hike from beginning to end. We began at Caples Lake and followed the trail along the lake until it veered up to toward the historic Emigrant Lake. I arrived to this weather worn Lake imagining the Mormon Emigrates hitting this wall of rock. It was fishbowl staring up at the back of Roundtop and Stagecoach across the Lake. We bushwhacked up to the Stagecoach Trail for another beautiful full vista view of both Caples Lake and Emigrant. I imagine the Mormans did the same and continued East to Utah? We on the other hand went West on the trail bushwhacking our way back down this steep terrain guided by the ski structures that eventually lead us the the “Emigrant Road SLCA” . It was breathtaking. The trees marked with these signs leading us back to the Lake for our final two miles back to our vehicle. I will hike this again. But I will bring a fishing pole.

Beautiful trail with amazing views

Went here for a hike with my boyfriend and he proposed to me at the end of the hike at glacier lake! Couldn’t have been better! Trail itself was maintained good, mostly dirt, sand, some granite but not as much as we expected. Passed a lot of beautiful lakes along the way. Saw zero people on way up and only a few at the end. We went on a Friday morning though so likely more populated summer / weekends. Brought our dog. Off leash no problem ! Lots of squirrels and chipmunks. Beautiful lakes, good tree coverage, fall colors, scenic overlook. Was not a difficult hike at all. Very gradual inclines. Hadn’t been hiking once this year but have done multiple backpacking trips in our past. This was a perfect gradual reintroduction to getting back in nature. Lots of camping spots.

We took a 2001 Camry down the road, made it the whole way. Definitely would have been easier in a 4 wheel drive car or a car with higher clearance. Wouldn’t recommend taking a little car. The road was ok but the very end had a huge drop off ditch that was tricky to navigate. But we managed ! If it was rainy or had been a wet season the road would have been a lot worse.

This trail was much more then I expected. As it is Fall right now, the aspen trees are changing their colors to a golden yellow. Very cloudy out, and left before the rain started to fall. Very green pine trees, yellow grasses, and a little bit of the wildflowers left. Easy hike, very quiet as we saw very few people. We crossed the creek once. Mt. Baldy wilderness has many recreational opportunities. Definitely adding this area to our bucket list! Great place to hike!

Hiked in mid October. It was raining and cold but overall hike was great. We only made it to the creek before heading back up about 7 miles there and back. It's all uphill with no breaks on the way back. Saw lots of evidence of bears but didn't encounter any thank goodness. So be prepared for that. It's a beautiful hike over all.

Great hike on Oct 13, 2018. Nebo Loop road was closed due to Pole Creek fire, but able to hike Bear Canyon to top where it intersects with Nebo Loop road. Had the entire area to ourselves. Found a fantastic bear paw print on the trail. Snow near the top 1/4 of the trail and quite muddy in spots, but passable.

Great little trail. Be sure that take a picnic lunch and swimsuits!

Completed this trail with two friends and small dog. Nothing major for the majority of the way. Typical desolation hike in that the trail is a lot of large rocks and dirt.

Trail head at the end of the parking lot with a vehicle gate across it. First two miles are pretty uneventful with only the soda springs and old resort to be seen. Preservation work is going on at the resort. Please be considerate of that.

The rest of the trail is switch back upon switch back until you reach the top. Coming from the east coast, I was fairly used to this.

The lake is as beautiful as the pictures show. Crystal clear, blue, rimmed with mountains. The water is still as glass and cold as ice.

Stayed up there for about an hour.

Total trip about 6 hours.

So beautiful, it was too windy to have a fire this past weekend. I believe the Rangers put no fire flags in most campsites, nonetheless still a great trip.

Trail was in great condition. Weather was perfect. Got a little chilly in the evening. Great spot to spend a relaxing lake side weekend.

An amazing view of the back of mt sneffel and others at the end of this walk. The last mile is pure up, but the end is worth it!

We loved this hike. We basically had the entire hike to ourselves on a Sunday morning. Well maintained, spruce, Aspen at every turn, we will return. Not sure if the distance shown above is accurate, as the signs seem to contradict these numbers, but it was a great hike. Highly recommended.

I did this trip on 8/23/18. This was my first time in the Desolation Wilderness and I loved every minute of it. The hike to Gilmore isn't too hard and the trail is easy to follow. Lake Gilmore is a beautiful lake and when I was there I was the only one around. I went to Mt. Tallac from Gilmore and it it sure easier than the North side of fallen Leaf Lake. Of course the views are spectacular and for me especially viewing the mountains looking toward desolation wilderness. i went back to Gilmore and returned the same way. Great hike and not too hard.

Nice forested trail with steady, moderate incline from Salt Creek up to the Nebo Loop road. Several stream crossings although they were dry in Sept. Very pretty fall hike.

September 8, 2018. Hiked Bear Canyon trail from Bear Canyon campground up to Nebo Loop road and back. Forest service trail no. 132. Beautiful fall colors with good mix of evergreens, maples, and aspens. Moderate inclines and fairly well marked with just a little overgrowth onto sides of trail. Did not pass anyone on the trail even though the Nebo Loop road was fairly busy as it was a Sat afternoon. Several stream crossings although they were all dry in Sept. Quite a few trees fallen over trail and several areas with large roots or cobbles in stream bed that would make this a poor trail for mountain biking. About middle of hike there's a section of trail recently washed out by a landslide, but you're able to find way to other side slide to reach continuing trail. Great hike though. I took my time and was a little slower than normal for taking pictures and mapping the route. My AllTrails app didn't start recording correctly at the beginning (on bottom end of the trail) so didn't accurately reflect the distance or the elevation; the route is closer to 6 miles up and back - and about 1,900 ft elevation gain from bottom to top. With the fall colors among the evergreens the lower 2/3 of the trail is one of the most beautiful trail sections I've hiked in the Nebo area.

Just finished this hike over Labor Day. Started at the Carr Lake TH. The road really wasn't that bad up to the TH. Just take it slow and go around the big rocks. Not much parking up there at the TH. Creative parking for sure. The trail starts on a dirt road, travels past Carr Lake and Freely Lake. Lots of families and kids swimming here. For the most part this 6 mile hike to Glacier Lake is pretty easy if you're in good shape. Last two miles is uphill, but really not bad. I did it in less than 3 hours with a full pack and several stops. Lots of campsites at Glacier, but this busy weekend made it pretty crowded with some loud campers late at night and early am. Hiked the Sandy Ridge trail back west the next day. The ridge affords some fabulous views, but the 1000 foot drop is on a rocky, steep trail, typical of older trails without switchbacks. We took the north trail up towards Sawmill Lake finally camping at Rock Lake almost 8 miles later. You pass Shotgun lake on the way to Sawmill. No camping there. This section of trail is through forest and really no place to camp. The climb to Rock Lake was long. Rock lake is nothing spectacular but had a few nice sites. Day 3 we hike from Rock Lake south past Penner Lake and back to Carr Lake. This section is really beautiful with lakes that have some private sites near rocky cliffs. Much prettier than Rock or the Shotgun lake side of this loop. Lots of people out here on day hikes which is what I expected for Labor Day. I would do this hike early season when there might be more water and when there's snow in the higher country. I gave this 4 stars only because there were so many people out there!

So amazing! Between the rock formations and the green surroundings, this is my new favorite trail. Highly recommend starting early to avoid storms. They rolled in by noon today. We made it back just in time!

Great hike. You hike with good view of Caples Lake for almost 2 miles and then head in and the hike is pretty up and down throughout with mostly tree cover and not a lot of unshaded areas. Nice wildflowers and a few streams. Trail pretty easy to follow out and back. Hiked on Labor Day and there were a few hikers up and down but not too busy considering the holiday. Take a lunch and relax once you reach Emigrant Lake or alongside Caples Lake when you get back down.

Great trail run. Ran it on Labor Day, and crowds weren’t too bad.

Amazing greenery due to a month of rain. Hiked in rain and hail but had proper gear. #94 was not strenuous. It got sloppy with the rain but very worth seeing the view at 10,400 and the old growth pines.

Hiked from the Glen Alpine TH on 08/29/18. Like most trials in the Desolation Wilderness, rocks and more rocks. Nice lake, but no signs of fish activity, BUT there were signs of bear activity. Evidently, a bear was at the camp site 50 yards from mine and climbed a tree to get to the food bags. The bear was approximately 25 yards from the the group camping there and stayed there devouring their food while they helplessly watched in fear banging on pots and pans and blowing whistles. After 45 minutes, the bear left fat and happy! Well, we are in their homes, and bears will be bears.

A great spur off of the PCT. Beautiful! Only a few campers on a Monday. Locals had told me that the lake is packed on the weekends but Its a pretty nice size so that should not be an issue. I recommend a visit. Stay the West side for the AM sun
