Arrived at the trailhead at 9:30am. Was the 2nd person there. There doesn't seem to be much space at all to park. The space I was in had room for maybe 3 cars. After my hike there were about 8 cars there and all of them were parked on the sides of the road. I went clockwise as I like getting to the views first and also like dealing with the steeper inclines early. This trail was rated moderate but it's actually pretty easy. None of the inclines were too steep, they were gradual and most of the hike is pretty flat. The views on this hike were fantastic. There's a couple spots along the AT that lead to some small overlooks including one that had a fire pit. There's a bigger overlook midway through the AT and Raccoon Ridge has almost a 360 unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape. Amazing place to sit down and have a snack while enjoying the view. Big cairn at the top too. The kaiser and coppermine trails were rocky along the way but with the gradual elevation changes they weren't a big deal. You'll be walking through the woods for the most of the kaiser and coppermine trails with a few creeks and a small waterfall to cross. Few big boulders along the path as well. Ran into only 3 groups of people (none wearing masks) along this entire hike. The cold weather probably kept most people at home so I was able to have raccoon ridge all to myself. Blazes are not well marked (a lot of them have faded) but it's pretty obvious where you need to go because of the clear paths. Loved this hike, will definitely be back. I think next time I will add on the longer portion of the kaiser and coppermine trail to enjoy this hike a little longer.

HikingGreat!

One of the better hikes for NJ. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get to the trailhead by car, since the road was blocked about two miles up, but you can park and make the trek. Def worry it! The falls are gorgeous. It’s a straight shot up though, so be prepared.

Really enjoyed this loop on a sunny crisp day in January. We took the steep way up to save our knees on the way down. Lake was frozen over and lovely. Took us about 2.5 hours of moving time, 3:15 with the stops. Good parking very close. Apparently the road was closed for winter about 2 more miles north west of the spot we parked, so you’ll want to approach from the south East. 6.7 miles and 1488 ft

Gotta give this trail a huge thumbs up ! This was the trail I started on. Yes I know it says hard lol. Me and my friend didn’t take it serious and yes it is a hard trail , ESPECIALLY if your a beginner. But the waterfall is gorgeous I would suggestion going right as winter ends and spring begins this is when the water is flowing well. The trail it self is a lot of rocks and climbing. Make sure to eat right in the morning. The trail is beautiful and brings you to a gorgeous lake. On the other note if your photographer looking for a good place for waterfall photos and don’t wanna hike this is perfect as the water fall is right at the trail head. All in all this trail is a fantastic beast !! Enjoy !!

Great elevation hike, trails well marked, and the pond was really cool right now all iced over. You could skate out on it pretty far.

BackpackingGreat!

Backpacked in from Kittatinny Point Visitor Center yesterday evening. Found a campsite with fire ring on top of ridge. Excellent views of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and Delaware river. Super windy making wind chill feel like 20 degrees. No natural protection from wind, since on highest point. Zero degree sleeping bag held up well and tent blocked out wind. Nice sunrise at 7:20, rising over mountain a few miles away.

The road is closed so there's a 2mi walk to the trail which begins at buttermilk falls. The first mile is 1,600ft uphill, then it's mostly flat except for some rolling hills and down the rest of the way

Beautiful trail, quite rocky so wear good boots. Quick walk to gorgeous ridge line.

I’m not sure what we did but this turned into a 12.9 hike for us, it was great though such a beautiful trail.

From parking on Millbrook Road, the Orange Rattlesnake Swamp trail will lead you to the Outdoor Center and you can take the AT along the ridge. My route on this hike was the reverse and a bit of bushwhacking.

HikingIcyRockySnow

Cold hike, snow covered trails, but didn’t see a soul while in the trail. Glad we had this app, trail was hard to follow with the trail markings. Great scenic area. Snow and ic made the trail tricky to hike which lead up to the difficult rating. Waterfall was nice to see and hearing the lake ice groan while throwing rocks was a hit with the kids. We had a bit of a scare seeing wood being dragged across the hiking trail to the lake was a bit unnerving as there was no foot prints in the snow other then myself and two kids. Took a few minutes to figure it out, but we saw some chewed up sapling stumps where beaver had been feeding. Nice teaching moment for the kids.

HikingGreat!

Parked at the suggested parking area around noon and hiked for about 4 hours. Mountain road was a pleasant hike along the stream and eventually to the waterfall. After that, I hardly saw anyone traverse up the mountain. Some spots were slick but overall it was an awesome hike with some nice viewpoints along the ridge. All in all hiked about 12 miles.

NJ hit us good with the waterfalls! We went to park at Crater Lake like the reviews below suggest, but that road was also closed. It ended up being totally fine though because the walk along Mountain Road was incredibly flat and easy, even passing by a couple of old mill sites where we took a side trip to see another rad waterfall just off trail. The actual trail is steep heading to the AT but pretty flat and easy once you get there and around Crater Lake, which is gorgeous. All in all, we ended up doing 12 miles of incredibly fun, really diverse trail and had a fantastic time!

The trail wasn’t hard at all. I would rate it as easy as majority of the terrain is flat.

HikingClosed

The trailhead at buttermilk falls is closed to vehicles so unless you want to hike a mile in its best to park at crater lake. Was a really nice hike. Was concerned because we saw a lot of hunters along the roadside on the drive there but we did not see any in the woods and only heard two gunshots that were off in the distance. The climb from buttermilk falls back up to the AT was long and steep in places but the remainder of the trail was easier and mostly runnable.
