Getting there: We had a 4WD and camped at Mahogany Flats for 2 nights. IMO, you might make it as far as Thorndike CG in a 2WD. Charcoal Kilns, no problem. The road is very rough between Thorndike and Mahogany Flats. We started at 6:30 AM and made the summit in 4:15 with lots of pics and rest stops. Return 2:30. Nice views all around and the elevation made for pleasant temps.

Well marked
Awesome

Great hike. Amazing views. Don’t mind the ladybugs, they won’t bite.

My son and I hiked this today, 5-26-18. First, you can't get to the trail head by regular car. You need to walk the road from Charcoal Kiln to get there Or take a 4x4.. This is about 1.5 miles with an elevation gain on the road of about 1200 feet...just on this road. Many have said you can't drive the road. Not true. You can safely drive at least 1/2 up and park at or near the Thorndike campground. This saves you a lot.
Trial is well marked and you should know, we are both in great shape. This is a very difficult hike. First portion, very tough. Flattens out a lot for the middle third . Then, the climb to the top starts. The switchback gain a ton of elevation in a very short order.
People have said the view at the top is to die for. However, I can't say that. This may be, though, due in large part to the fact that we have been to so many top of mountains, they are all starting to have the same "appeal". If you haven't done many hikes to peaks, this may be one worth looking into, but again, not an easy trek. It took us a total of 10 hours round trip moving at the best clip we could.

Loved this hike. Great views of the valley and surrounding area. We hiked up late afternoon and had the whole peak to ourselves, beautiful. Completed 05/18

Did this trail on 4/24. Wow what a hike. Steep the first couple miles then it does level out then gets steep again right before the summit. Lots of snow on the peak still. We were able to do it without crampons, just made a ladder in the snow. Great views all the way and a great hike.

Not totally sure I made it to the end but we climbed the mountain near the end of the Canyon. Slippery with the lose gravel be careful! One of our group members slid down and ended up with some nasty cuts. Overall nice hike though. Lots of lizards!

We really enjoyed this hike! The views at the top made the inclines completely worth it! Round trip was around four and a half hours for us plus thirty minutes at the top for lunch and pictures.

Scenic hike with colorful rock formations. The first part is a relatively easy hike along the canyon wash. The latter part is a bit more difficult as you are climbing over rocks and gaining a bit more elevation. Bring plenty of water as the trail was hot with little shade in the afternoon, even in late March.

Smooth marble canyon and fun dry falls to climb. The children loved exploring here.

nice easy hike, not too crowded and 87 degrees this morning.

Did this trail in early April. We started the hike from the charcoal kilns and completed the entire hike in 9 hours. Overall the hike had nice scenic views. It was most of the elevation gain occurred in the beginning and end. There was more snow covering the last 1500’ of elevation and I would recommend crampons and poles for this time of year. The altitude, while not high, was challenging due to us coming from sea level so I highly recommend acclimating.

We hiked around in the late afternoon and the light was great on these layered rock formations. If you like geology, you will lose track of time!! So cool!

A great canyon hike with lots of different options for every hiking skill level. Highly recommended climbing some of the spur trails to get great views of the valley.

Absolutely love this hike! Great views all the way. There is a downed tree when I went through but it is easy to get over.

The trail was in a good shape. We had great views over Death Valley. Definitively a must for each Death Valley visitor.

Very steep at the end but the view was spectacular! The dry waterfalls that the park service claims are 6ft and 8ft high were not—very negotiable. Hot though, since the canyon walls block most of the breeze.

My favorite hike in Death Valley. Cool marble canyon, quiet, easy hike. Just as you come out of the first tight canyon, go to the left and follow a footpath to the top of a rock hill and get some great photos of the canyon from above.

The first part was definitely the tighest canyon, but just going the first .5 to .75 Mike's definitely cuts out a lot of cool views. after the tight canyons from start it grows into a huge walled canyon with so much more to see. I was planning on just going the first .5 miles based off recommendations but had to keep going.

It's so beautiful here! There are not only golden canyon but also colourful rocks. I'm afraid the trail shown in this app is not correct. At a certain point you will see some stones on the trail directing the true way.

A very special place. I strongly recommend you to come here if you go to Death Valley. In fact, just hiking the first narrow part is enough to see all the features of the trail.

Recommend going early morning or afternoon. Beautiful views! Total solitude! No trails. Drive slow through unpaved road.

This was my first stop in Death Valley, entering from the Vegas side. The vantage is a perfect intro to the park and provides you with the lay of the land. The views are obviously weather dependent.

intense incline for most of the way up. definitely worth every moment, breathtaking and unbelievable views! the very top has a complete 360 degrees overlook that goes on for Miles and miles. unfortunately it was super cold with heavy wind at the top so we could only stay a few moments to write our name in the itinerary. best hike I've ever done. took us about 4 hours, with several stops.

Desolation Canyon is a great alternative to its very popular neighbor (and often crowded) Golden Canyon. This walk/hike is mostly very flat with two easy approximately 5-8 ft scrambles over dry waterfalls (see picture). Small elevation gain of about 700 ft in the last half mile to a nice little overlook with good views of Telescope Peak. Overall, a very easy walk I used as a morning cool-down from a more difficult hike the previous day. Saw all age-ranges and abilities while hiking this. While named "Desolation Canyon", and you do get brief moments of solitude in the canyon as it bends around, but this is still a fairly popular hike and I saw about 20 people during the morning in peak season.

Reached the summit on 2.17.18. Took me 6 hours from the Kilns. That first mile on Mahogany Flat Rd was very brutal. More than half of the people seen on the trail had to turn around due to not being prepared. Crampons were a must!! Trekking poles were very handy as well. Had to leave my sleeping bag and blanket behind at the Meadows because of weight in my back pack. Setting up tent in this area was not an option, way too windy and cold! Tent set up at Thorndike, which was still pretty windy and cold at night.

Just did this trail, it was pretty easy. The temperature dropped as you get closer to the waterfall. Fun as you get to walk over some rocks to go over the little stream. We were worried about the unpaved road that gets you to the trailhead, but it was in good condition. Keep in mind this is unpaved so you have to go slower, but we were never worried our car would get stuck.
