Note to everyone - the only parking lot in the area is closed for the week.

$10 entrance fee but you can walk right up to the overlooks from the parking lot. It was a bit too crowded for my liking but beautiful views. The trail was pretty easy. Really cool experience if you have never been here before!

Beautiful walk with spectacular views at the Annapolis Rocks overview!!

Nice variety of trail loops with same great views.

Growth on the upper trail in spots is now making it tricky to move at speed in spots near the top.

Great trail. Stairs will make you winded but plenty of time between the hard parts to catch your breath.
Perfectly rated a "moderate" hike. Gets pretty busy on weekends, Friday morning wasn't busy but Saturday and Sunday were crowded! Dog friendly (on a leash of course) and everyone we came across was very friendly and kind. Go a little further down from Annapolis Rock to the little creek if you have a pup - great place to cool off and get a drink. I was proposed to at the top of Annapolis Rock :)

Watch for copperheads! Lots of them hiding out in the rocks.

Great workout and great views!

Had to use map to stay on trail and lots of mosquitos near the river. But a nice hike nonetheless.

Hard climb. We took 2 adults and 3 kids ages 9,10,and 12. Steep grades and some rock scrambling. The view was absolutely worth the effort. Bring lots of fluids. We had 68 oz and ran out on the way down.

Ive been hiking this trail so much it's easy now. Be aware that there are some places on the upper ridge where the growth almost covers the trail. (as of Saturday of Labor Day weekend)

It was difficult but definitely worth it!!
The view was absolutely beautiful!!

Beautiful views and creeks along the way (I went just after heavy rain). Some tough uphill grades.

Amazing hike, and definitely quite a workout; but the views are worth it! I would definitely recommend bringing tons of water and proper hiking boots (especially in the summer)

nice views of the river for about 40% of trail. didn't see what made it hard other than it was difficult to find some turns.

Great views maintain trails marked areas a lot of historical points

Wide, well groomed trails. Lots of shade. The view is beautiful!

Good trail, good view. But too many mosquitoes, and the markers are inapparent and confusing.

fun trail with a rock scramble goimg to the 30 and 100 lb battery. view of Shepherdstown is awesome

This hike is amazing! It’s a tough hike but my sister and I did it in three hours. Make sure you bring water and supplies. This isn’t easy and is long .

If parking is full, head back east on Route 7 to the big Snickers Gap parking area at Route 601. Take the trail towards Bears Den, but turn north at the intersection with the AT and follow the white blazes to (carefully!) cross the highway and continue to Raven Rocks.

This hike was a lot of fun and had its challenges! The Catoctin Mountain Extension trail is actually a combination of trails that loop around a majority of park. If you want more of a challenge, definitely go counterclockwise (starting with Chimney Rock). If you have any questions, the park employees are very friendly! Only gave it 4 stars because of the views aren’t to die for, but still very beautiful overall.

This was a fun trail. Definitely not as hard as the label would make it out to be.

loved the serenity at 7 AM and the views from the river trail. explored all trails a little. by 9AM it gets very busy and yet it's still peaceful. The 10 dollar entrance fee is a bit high but i am glad i visited.

After breakfast, The wife and I rode into the park. This is a great little loop that features the Cascade Falls, A climb on part of the Ridge Trail and a flat easy 2 miles up and back to the Bloede Dam Project. The dam is being removed. Super nice weather and the park was once again crowded. Limited parking due to half of the park still closed due to flood damage.

Try to stay away from the lower parts of the path near the river as they are very overgrown and hard to follow. Otherwise, pretty good trail IF you have this app or know your way around. Paths are not well marked.
Update: 2 days after the hike our dog got some type of bite or infection from the tall grass. Definitely not worth the hike. Advise to stay out of the grassy area!

You spend a bit of time alongside I-70 and can hear it in the distance for some chunks. This negative is far outweighed by the hike itself and especially by the spectacular ending.

If you like primitive camping, there are primitive sites, a couple latrines, and a great spring to draw water from.

Great hike. 2 miles up hill, turnaround, then 2 miles downhill. Great overlook. Little spring off to the side of the overlook. 3-4 hours. Moderate.
