Awesome! Great incline going up the mountain. Great Cardio. I did the hike solo and felt safe. Going down the hill I chose the harder trail and it was a little rocky so I slid a couple of times but other then that it was a great hike I would definitely do it again!!

I did this hike a couple of weeks ago. This hike requires bouldering and is a full body workout. Wear good shoes and prepare to pull yourself up and through some large boulders. There is some decent incline on the trail. The view at the peak is beautiful. The wind was blowing strong that day and it felt great to stand up there and take in the view.

Good workout!!!

Beautiful trail. Hidden gem for sure. Except we met some people on the way back with dogs off leash and they were slaughtering a rattlesnake just because the lady said “she was afraid it was gonna bite her!!” Respect native species and step away. Don’t kill the snakes that are needed for the ecosystem to maintain itself. AND LEASH YOUR DOG!

Not really a hike but not really a walk either. Great training location with lots of options in side trails and such. My normal route covers about 6 miles.

A good hike up the mountain.

Looks as though this hike will have a few new views soon. Sign posted for new community, Near the dead end gate area. This is a fun hike though and we have added to this hike in the past to make it even longer. Always nice to get away from the hustle and bustle.

Beautiful hike and great views on top.

One of my favorite hikes. Steep hike for a 1hr workout to the top. Fantastic view!

I take the shortcut trail going up on the right (west) side, after the housing area and the large water tank. This hike is only about three miles, but is great for getting the legs, heart and lungs pumping because of steep incline.

We did hell creek trail to horse thief loop, about 4 miles. Beautiful hike, steep downhill in, step uphill out. Clean well maintained trails.

This was a beautiful trail with great rest stops, pretty decent instructions, and incredible views! Reading the previous posts really helped in being prepared for this hike. It is pretty rocky and I would suggest hiking boots, although I did it in my regular walking shoes and was okay. But it’ll ruin your shoes pretty fast if you do this trail often in them. I also agree that it’s so much better to go earlier rather than the middle of the day because then the sun is so high and more direct and that makes it less enjoyable. For me at least! Make sure to read some of the other posts for some good tips. I also would suggest bringing water. I didn’t think a little over 3 miles one way was going to be that big of a deal, but you it’s a pretty decent incline most of the way, so having some water and maybe a snack bar would be helpful. Hopefully this helps!

Awsome hike. I posted a 36 min video on YouTube of the full hike. Do search "hellhole canyon preserve full hike 9.25" if you want to see what it is like.

Great trail! Lots of steep ups and downs. Foggy morning, so I'll have to come do it again to see the views.

I really liked this hike. Short, but steep! And fun! I wasn't expecting it to be so steep for so long. I couldn't hear any civilization, only birds. I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere. Just look beyond the subdivision (which is hidden by hills most of the time) and gaze at the ocean in the distance. It was just challenging enough, serene, and pretty. I went up the north side, and down the south. I met someone who hikes there every day, and he said that was the harder route to go. Both seems comparable, though.

This was a great hike. Not too easy, not too hard....just right :-).
A great hike for beginners or intermediate hikers.
This is a great workout hike and could easily be done several times a week.

Nice steep but smooth hike! Great 360 degree view from the top! Started the hike around 0800 and it was perfect out.

this was a fun hike. trail is rocky most of the way. i liked the rest areas spread out through the preserve. very well marked and has way points by the trails. do yourself the favor of getting a map, or snap a pic of it at the start so you can navigate easier.

I thoughts this was a nice hike to go on, relatively easy and great view of olivenhain reservoir and lake Hodges! Definately a hike to do on an overcast day since there isn’t too much shade
I would say it’s a great trail to go on if you don’t know how far you want to hike since it does connect to the greater trail system.

Love this hike for the dog, she can be off of the leash for most of it. Make sure you bring lots of water.

Okay, not the prettiest hike but nice views at sunset. Trail is an old washed out road.

Not open Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday?!?
Insane

First mile, high elevation gain and tires you out but rest of walk to Lake Hodges overlook is so worth it! Creek is on way in/out of trail next to parking lot. I got a late start at 1030am and was done by 1pm

This was a moderately steep, rocky trail through scrub and bushes. It was full sun, so bring water and hats. You are always aware that you are near an urban area, traffic noise and farm equipment could be heard. Very few people were out on the trail, and we saw a variety of birds and evidence of coyotes. It is a typical San Diego county urban hike!

I did this hike a week ago with my girlfriends and it is by far our favorite yet. There were no markings at the trailhead or anywhere along the trail. We just used previous hikers review and basically made it to the top following shoe prints from previous hikers.
We indefinitely used alot of upper body strength. Other than that the hike was not as difficult as others had mentioned.
The views were amazing starting from the pancake rock and from the cave..no wind at the top so we got pretty lucky and was able to enjoy our time up there. We will definitely come back again!

The creek was beautiful and had more flow than I would have thought for this time of the year. The trail was rocky most of the way up but you just have to pay attention a bit. I couldn’t believe it when I got to the top and I found toilets and a water fountain! Are we spoiled or what—-:-) I’ve never seen that before!
