Short (2 miles round trip), well maintained trail. I would call this family friendly (472 feet of elevation gain). Plenty of opportunities to stop and rest (and take pictures) on the way up. The views of the lake and Wizard Island were great.

Stunning hike with incredible views of Shasta, Castle Crags, Castle Lake and Heart Lake. We clocked this hike at 3 miles round trip, rather than the listed 2. Trail is quite steep in places and elevation gain was closer to 850'. It's easy to lose the trail ~1 mile up; other hikers have tried to help by placing rock barriers in multiple places where the path appears to diverge as well as rock stacks to help guide you, but the path is still easily lost in places.

Great views of the lake

Easier route is to follow Hedge Creek Falls trail to the end and cross the river. (I’ve done this with an 8 yo) Mossbrae Falls is a short 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk further along the tracks.

Amazing bang for your buck! So beautiful! The trail is crazy hard to keep track of but just bring an adventurous attitude, stay to the right and south and use this app to stay on track., you'll find it! So worth it!

This was our first summit and it did not disappoint. Weather was foggy and misty. Lower section of the trail through the forest is gradual. When the trail meets with the PCT is when the steep grade starts. It only gets worse from there. The main trail is to the left on the mountain but is hard to find at times. Very rocky, do not trust your footing. Many loose boulders and slabs. You feel this one in your glutes the next day!

We did the pinnacle, on a very windy, foggy day with no experience. It wasn't all that bad. Took us a bit to scramble up- maybe 15 minutes. Hung out at the top for a bit and came back down. Came back down SO fast (not even 5 minutes). Including *many breaks* we did this hike in a little less than 8 hours.

This is a quick, short trail with high return with the trail ending w 360 panoramic views of crater lake!

8-18-18 western route. my fist time and made it! the hike through the woods is moderate and beautiful. There’s glimpses of Diamond Lake in front of Mt Bailey where we started. Once we got into the clearings it’s a gravelly hike up until we got to bigger and and more solid boulders and rocks which had better foot holds. At the base of the spire is an 80 degree rock climb to the summit. There’s plenty of good hand holds and even ledges that u can stand on to climb up to the summit. It took me 4 mins to get to the top and I had a friend at the base to give suggestions on which way looks better. The view is the best 360 I have ever had! The climb down was longer, ~15 mins. I had hiking piles until the rock scramble. I will do this again!

A Five Star Hike once there is a trail. Today it requires walking on the mainline railroad with most of the route leaving no place to get well clear of the trains. Bringing your kids is idiotic. It is illegal for everyone! However there is hope: The Mt Shasta Trail Association is making significant progress on extending the existing Hedge Creek Falls trail to Mossbrae Falls. Please support it. See their project update at: https://mountshastatrailassociation.org/2018/10/new-mossbrae-falls-trail/

Great hike. Did it in mid October on a weekday, so there were very few people there. Yes, it is all uphill all the way to the top, but take your time and enjoy the views from every angle. It's a fairly steady climb and there is no scrambling. Well worth your time.

I loved this trail! It was pretty easy hike and the waterfall at the end was spectacular! We had the trail to ourselves.

Watch out for dog poop on the trail! It was kind of a bummer to have to be more aware of piles of poo than actually enjoying the scenery around. Overall, it's a beautiful tiny hike!

Great, short hike. It’s a workout, but you are rewarded with terrific views. The lake is incredibly beautiful!

My favourite waterfall although hike is short and usually very crowded.

This was an adventure! I took my kids, ages 8 and 9, and I was a little stressed out about the trains. There are many areas where it is narrow and not a lot of room on the sides of the tracks, and I worried about getting stuck in that section if a train rolled through. You're stuck basically walking either on the tracks, or on the rock, which is actually tricky to walk on and found it was worth the stress to just walk on the tracks. Stay on the EAST side of the tracks on the way in and out; the west side is really narrow and you'd basically be pinned against a rock face if a train came through. We had one train go by, but we had basically found a nice wide spot to sit and enjoy some snacks and wait for one so we knew we'd likely be clear the rest of the way there. The train ended up stopping, actually, and we continued on while it was stopped and moved aside once it started moving. The falls themselves were magical and absolutely gorgeous. My kids enjoyed the adventure. We parked on Dunsmuir Avenue and walked down through Shasta Retreat, and had no problems at all. We always eat at Yak's after a hike in the area because they have delicious food!

I give it 5 stars but I got lost on my first attempt. I started at the south gate trailhead and completely missed the right when you reach the forest. I followed rock carins for a ways down the slope and realized there was no trail there after reaching the valley at the bottom. I did come across a really cool slime mold along the way. I went back the next day and started from the panther meadow trailhead and completed the hike and tried to make obvious trail makers hopefully to prevent anyone else from missing the turn. The hike was absolutely beautiful.

great falls. easy beautiful hike!

Breathtaking views!! Pretty strenuous if unused to the altitude.

Great view of the lake and wildlife

simply spectacular. we totally scored with the weather. we were here last year same time and smoke from wildfires made visibility = zero, yesterday visibility was infinity. this is a must see must do hike.

Great day hike. Look down into the crater lake bowl, great views of diamond lake and can see for miles. Pretty easy to the PCT junction then a fun rock scramble( just be respectful if other people around as lots of loose rocks) capped off by a fairly easy 80-100ft rock climb up to the peak. The climb down is a bit more challenging though.

At the top there is room for up to three people at the same time maybe so enjoy the views take pictures and leave your name in the metal canister there if you wish. Overall a good workout but more than worth it!

Very enjoyable hike! The parking lot is relatively small, some street parking nearby.

The trail curves towards the back of the mountain surrounded by large pines and firs. The elevation is slow and steady, trail is very well maintained.

The view away from the lake is just as impressive as the lake itself - old growth forests as far as the eye can see!
