Did this hike today. Probably because it was in mid January, we met very few hikers. It was snowy in places and heavy wind up top. Pretty decent hike but at times the trail routes might be tricky as there are few signs. I would say its above moderate to difficult hike.

Beautiful trail. Micro spikes are necessary and enough snow most the way for snow shoes. lots of people and dogs off leash.

Fairly easy, well trafficked even in winter. Nice views looking up! Some small streams to cross and one spot with scrambling in the winter. Best spots are after the lake when it gets quiet!

Good hike but always busy on the weekends

I think it’s doable for most average fit people. If possible Uber to Echo Trailhead an finish through Cholla, way less bouldering on way down. Go early if possible.

It is beautiful trail covered with snow. Some areas are very slippery. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Mt Hood. I am not sure it is due to weather or just missing it. Lake is frozen and has lots of foot print. I have no guts to step on it.

Pleasant easy walk in the winter, when there are few visitors. beautiful forest.

Completed in January when trail was icy and without spikes. Very sketchy but I finished it..... sliding on my butt on a couple occasions. So worth it though! Views were aaamazing! #whyihike

Nice hike. A bit icy near top but worth the views and quietness.

Pretty icy in spots but worth it in snowshoes. Went up on Tuesday and saw 6-8 other people/dogs. Right now you'd need crampons or snowshoes, I saw a few people that turned around because they couldn't get very far. The payoff at the lake is fantastic, it's frozen over but there are some visible warm spots along the shore so I wouldn't recommend walking on it.

Great hike with fantastic views on a nice day! It was a bit steep at times. It was very doable for us in winter.

There is now a parking area that is plowed adjacent to the Ski Bowl parking lot. If it’s winter, make sure to get a Sno-park day pass.

We snowshoed, but we would have been fine with crampons/microspikes. Icy patches made it tough for folks without.

First time to the Grand Canyon and the views were gorgeous! Definitely would recommend microspikes for the trail right now, as it was pretty packed with snow. Took about 3hrs round trip for me to get to the three mile house and back. Stopped quite a few times on the way back up to rest + enjoy the views.

Short but keep ur heart rate up!!!

Very beautiful (especially with all of the snow), but always very, very crowded. There’s a reason it’s the most popular hike on the mountain!

Trail was busier than I expected for it being a weekday but great hike nonetheless. Snow was packed down, using micro spikes made it much easier but could be done without them. Trail is in excellent condition and easy to hike. I didn’t see any dog poop or trash like other reviews mentioned but the first half mile did have orange peels dropped every few feet on the trail...

If your body can handle the hike then definitely do it. The easiest parts are until mile marker 16. If you find it hard before then you should not continue. A lot of people get hurt on this trail and need to be rescued. Definitely intended for the more experiences hiker.

It was cool to see the biggest tree in the world, but it isn’t really a hike. It is sort of one of those things that you do to say that you have done it, but aren’t dying to do again. Would recommend going when it is not busy (early morning or offseason) so that it is easier to take pictures without worrying about other people being in it.

Really nice hike. Roads were closed due to snow when we visited so took the long way, but was worth it because of all the Mule deer that crossed the trail in front of us. Not recommended on a cloudy day, because then there is no view from the top.

This was a awesome climb and a real challenge at times ....great views

We completed this trail with my family yesterday 1/6/2019. Beautiful trail, lake was totally frozen, we could walk all the way across the lake. You have to park at SkiBowl and there are two parking lots - one for SkiBowl and other one near Mirror Lake Plaza. I parked in SkiBowl parking and I don't know if snow park permit is needed in this space.
Trail is pretty wide, well groomed and we found many people on the trail. Path from parking lot to the trail-head is well behind the freeway and I wasn't bothered by any noise from freeway. It looks like they put up new plaza, restroom and new trail pathway from parking to trail-head. Overall nice trail.

Out and back is a great way to experience the whole mountain. 2:49

We did this trail yesterday. A group on their way up said it took them 5 hours to do, which was a little daunting to us at first. The descent down was a breeze. It's quite snowy, and given the snow storm that just came through today, cramp ons were/are highly advised for this. We are mountain hikers, so hiking the descent first was very abnormal to us. It was such a cool experience. The hike back up was incredibly challenging, but it was worth it!

Beautiful with all the snow! I wasn’t as fit as I would’ve liked to be so maybe I’ll hike it in the summer. Adding snowshoes makes everything harder. Disappointed in how much dog poop was on the trail :(

Definitely challenging! I’d reccommend hiking boots because you’re scrambling towards the tops on both sides of the mountain

Easy hike for my first snowshoe adventure. I could have hiked it today without the snowshoes but wore them anyway for the practice. Great views especially with all the snow cover. I even ventured out on the lake. It was frozen solid. Highly recommend checking this hike out this time of year.

A fun way to bring in the new year! I would rate it as easy-medium depending on your fitness level. The second half of the hike up is switchbacks which don’t get too steep but it is a climb. That made the way back that much more enjoyable though. Beautiful frozen lake with a view of Mt Hood was a nice reward.

Very busy, better parking than the cholla side and easier climb.

Beautiful trail! A little crowded today and the trail was icy. Can’t wait to come back in the Spring! Happy New Year!
