Great hike, did the round trip in about 1hr 45min. Definitely bring some water with you, it was heating up at about 11am when I was on my way back and I was glad I was able to drink some water while I was at the top. Amazing views from the top, even saw a Coast Guard helicopter flying around below me.

Keep your eyes on the trail, I was distracted by the view and came within a couple feet of a rattlesnake crossing the path, I just backed away slowly and gave him the right of way.

Beautiful hike

Worth the climb! Amazing views from every angle! Great workout!

The boys (husky mixes) and I finally made this hike today. Gorgeous views & rock formations; I took so many photos of the boys standing on the rocks and looking off into the distance.
I average 3-5 miles daily with some elevation on run days and I really felt like this was a challenging hike; we took about 3 hours including breaks for water & photos and a long walk back to the first parking lot. Next time, I’ll park much closer to the trailhead. I couldn’t believe the number of people we encountered running this trail! I also was amazed at the number of kids doing this hike!
I brought 4 liters of water and we went through most of it- though I’m pretty sure I leaked as my pack & back were soaked when we reached the top. Thankfully, I had 2 separate bladders and the second was full for our trip down. Had just enough at the end to fill the boys’ bowls one last time and the stinkers didn’t even want it!
We started at 7:45 and managed to have much shade up until probably the last mile or so on the way down. We did not see any snakes, but the boys found a few lizards.
There were enough people that I felt safe as a solo female but, surprisingly, not near as many people I expected having read about this hike online. We did not stop for a chip photo, as we were solo. Like others, we saw some drones up at the top and heard an occasional speaker.
We didn’t come across any aggressive or unleashed dogs.
We found people we encountered to be polite, if not downright friendly. The boys got a few pets & ear scratches from new friends. We tried really hard to give way in narrow spots and others did the same.
We’ll definitely be back.

Very treacherous and rocky. Cowels wasn’t to bad but we wanted to complete the 5 Peak Challenge so we hit Pyles Peak next. Round trip when done 9.3 miles, 89 floors and 26,000+ steps. My hardest hike by far.

Excellent, challenging with a good, somewhat flat break and wonderful views from the top

Amazing trail and great workout!

Good trail, went up without climbing shoes and that was my mistake. It says highly elevated at the end, which is true but basically the entire trail is uphill. Definitely not a beginners trail if you are just trying to get it done. Rocks here can be hard to get a grip with your shoes.

People keep saying it's a quick hike, but it didn't feel like that to me lol maybe because it's all a crazy incline. But an amazing hike- challenging, beautiful and a great hike with your pet dog. The last 0.8 of the hike is a really good challenge hiking up to the peak. If you take the east trail it's A LOT easier!

Excellent workout!...
Afraid of snakes but worth the hike. I will come back with friends, perfect place to meditate and relax.
This is where I realize that I must workout harder to be in shape " GOOD HEALTH ".
Enjoy life!......

Great location and fun hike.

Quick hike with amazing view at the peak. Be sure to check out the dam after, its beautiful. Last bit of the hike is the toughest.

Quick but steep trail with amazing views at the peak. Worth the climb!

Super Bonita caminata, la vista preciosa. Un poco resbaloso al regreso por que te resbalas con las piedritas.

Good trail & perfect Apring temps yesterday. We did see a rattles Abe crossing the trail, so keep an eye out.

It's a great hike with amazing views.

so much fun. i love this place. its local and more fun/ less crowded than cowles.

Needed to wait in line for a pic on the rock

Great trail run for uphill and downhill. Approx 2 hrs if you bypass the line up top to take a photo.

A very pleasant hike in early spring. We didn't start the hike until around 11 am. It was sunny but there was a nice cool breeze almost the whole time, so it was very comfortable. It's easy to see how it could be brutally hot in warmer weather though. You can choose to hike the steep trail straight up if you want the incline. We opted for the switchbacks to get a little more milage. The main reasons for not giving it more stars were the lack of trail markings, the heavily eroded trail with all its loose rocks, and the view which, while nice, was nothing spectacular. Overall, it was an enjoyable outing, but nothing to write home about.

P.S. The flag is still there

Fun trail..... a little short but wicked steep at the top!

Short hike but a really good climb! This was a really fun hike!

A good workout for the day. The views are great but teenagers ruin it with loud music all the way to the top. Even at the top there was a small crowd (50+) waiting in line to climb on the rock. Still, the battle for whose loud music to overcome the other. 10am on top was not early enough.

Great hike. Really enjoyed these steeper climb toward the end. Lots dogs and lots of people. Recommend if you don’t mind a lot of traffic.

Went on yesterday with a group of people and 2 dogs. My brother in law invited us because he regularly goes there. Awesome view throughout the hike and got better on the top.
Once you get to top there's no other way back but how you got up. Don't make the mistake I did trying to find another way down. It looks like there is but there isn't. A 3.5 mile hike turned into a 9 mile hike haha good times

I did this hike with my mom who hasn't hiked in a while. I've been hiking small feats here and there and wanted to try another trail in San Diego. We loved how it wasn't crowded and that it provided a nice scenery and vegetation for such a short hike. I would rank this easy rather than moderate.

Nice hike and was not too populated. I can imagine it getting hot in the summer, but it wasn'y too hot when I went..I used the switchbacks on my way up to avoid the loose rocks on the trail leading straight up. I would recommend that everyone does the same to avoid erosion. I will definitely do it again for an easy hike, but will try to bring water next time.
