Great hike in the winter. We only needed our spikes for the stair section that takes you down to the river, which is the most exciting and beautiful part of the hike. Our dog loved it and the 8 miles felt more like 6 miles. The trail should be rated as moderate not hard. One note, the map above is not accurate towards the end of the loop if you do it counter clockwise. The trail has been updated and remapped for the last mile.

Beautiful day for a snow hike. Most people were snowshoeing and skiing; I was on foot with poles which are a necessity if you're on foot. I had good snow boots that were fully waterproof and because the trail was pretty packed down, hiking it was completely enjoyable. I only sunk down a couple of times. It was very windy by the lake so bring face cover! Mostly through the woods but beautiful view of the lake with mountains behind near Brainard!

Love this hike, my fav! The change of scenery never gets boring.

This is a nice hike to do in the winter. It can be pretty crowded the rest of the year. Easy to follow trail even with some snow. There were a few icy patches and one stretch on the north side but the trail was doable without micro spikes. A couple of nice stretches near the river which was flowing very well right now. If you are on a bike keep in mind there is one spot where you will have to carry your bike either up or down a very steep staircase. No spectacular views but the woods and the meadows make for a nice hike. Keep your dog on a leash on this trail. They are very strict and rangers are out watching.

Climbed 11/11/18 - If you regularly climb high peaks like me then you will barely get warmed up by the time your standing on the summit. That said this mountain is great for certain experiences. For example, I hiked this during a mellow snow storm with 6 inches of snow on the ground and it provided a magical experience to share with my wife (which is what we wanted). This is a fantastic hike, to take someone who doesn't do big hikes, for a quick but beautiful experience.

Ok trail nice when you get to the lake
Easy trail

Awesome hike with stunning mountain views, wildflowers, and a beautiful lake. Perfect for a single day hike. Get there early for parking when the weather is nice.

Stunning views of the peaks all around. Pretty lakes below. Perfect distance for a great day hike.

As of October 28, the road up was perfectly clear, and the route has some snow and ice on it, but doable, especially if you have trax or poles. The wind on the pass was crazy, probably 70 mph-- enough to knock you off your feet if you're not bracing yourself. That and the snow on the other side kept us from going any further than the pass, but it was well worth just being on top. Great hike.

Trail was closed today. Hiked this before with my dog and she loved being off leash with the cows. Special dog tag for voice control needed for off leash capability.

Didn’t actually do left hand as it was closed due to mud. So did sage instead, which was also incredibly muddy.

We rented spikes which allowed us to truly trek thru the snow with ease — highly recommend. We didn’t make it to Emerald Lake because the sun was setting soon (starts a bit after 5pm in November) but Dream Lake was a real beauty!

Nice wide beginner hiking trail with a few steep area but nothing to drastic. There are benches along the way so you can take a breather if the trail gets you a bit winded. Today was a perfect day with clear blue skies but the at the Overlook the wind did have a slight bite. The snow capped mountains in the distance were amazing to view. Would like to do this trail again in the spring to see the wildflowers.

Did this today 11/9. The trail was quite busy. It had ALOT of snow!!!! In my opinion, the trail was not clearly marked. We were confused which direction to go couple times but the sceneries to the lake were gorgeous. The lake was frozen and it was sooooo windy.

Good, easy hike - little surprised to see it was moderate. Nice views! Only negative was a good chunk of the drive up was unpaved, and it had rain/snowed so an unanticipated muddy car.

Gorgeous hike in to the mountain passing some lakes. It's now very snowy and icy, but it's a fun hike to do!

I have been up here several times. Fun in winter. Trail can be run most winter days with just Yaktrax. The snow will be very packed down from the heavy snowshoer usage.

Great hike! We went last Friday and it was a beautiful day. The trail was icy and snow packed in some areas and even more so the closer we got to the lake.

This has quickly become one of our favorite hikes. The elevation gain is serious, but there are only a few spots that get challenging. The lake is peaceful, and we had it to ourselves today. It does get snowy and icy, so wear your spikes or bring your poles.

Beautiful trail. Conditions were perfect today, a little windy near Homestead Meadow but otherwise great. Still a lot of flood debris that makes the trail interesting. Lots of different terrains. I thought it was a really interesting trail and the homestead at the end (about 1/4-1/2 mile up from the “end” of the trail, you can go farther to see more) was super cool. Parking lot was empty at 8:45 but pretty full by the time we left. Still spaces available. Just east of the meadow is the wreckage of a very old car near the creek!

We did the short ~2 or 2.5 mile loop.
It was ok. Easy for out of towners but not much to see unless you do the longer loops. Part of the forest was being thinned intentionally by the park service. Equipment and sights of the road took away from the experience. It is a gravel/rock path and very exposed to the sun in midday so bring sunscreen, hat, plenty of water anyway.

Cows grazing freely which was interesting. Mountain bikers to be cautious of and let pass. Dogs on leash.

$5 parking for non Boulder residents or you can get the $25 year pass online ahead of time.

A stand-by if you want to run a 3-miler on all dirt in North Boulder and not have many hills on the route. In general it is a nice area, just not spectacular like other Boulder trails. For as many people as frequent this area, it can be remarkably still.

Pretty basic/boring/easy hike. The only excitement on this hike were the cows....

Pretty low traffic and amazing views. Didn’t see any wild life but the river was awesome. Along the river there are a few picnic tables.

Beautiful vista from up top. Definitely worth the rocky climb.

Beautiful hike. Not very difficult with lots of great views. If you keep going past Dream Lake you will end at Emerald Lake which is work the extra .7 miles! We also had a baby with us (10 months) and he loved it as well. Highly recommend!

This is still one of my favorite hikes. Great views, waterfalls, forest, lake meadows and sweeping views at the pass. At this time there is lots of snow and ice and it is likely the trail will not be passable in the next couple of weeks with any additional snow. Forth of July road was rough but still passable with 4WD drive and decent clearance. No snow on the road at this time. It was very challenging to get to Lake Dorothy. Most people had stopped at the pass and in addition to being sandblasted with snow and ice from hurricane force winds, there was no path to the lake. We tried and got caught in thigh high snow from the drifts. Views at the top were spectacular if you could handle the wind. Great hike. Definitely one to add to the list.

It was a gorgeous day to hike. I started early and there was no one on the trail all the way up to Diamond Lake. I did wear spikes the entire way due to ice and snow. I couldn't have hiked the last mile without them. My dog was with me and we had a blast. Yes, the road is awful to drive on but if you're a confident driver, you can make it. Please PULL OVER if someone is behind you and you're coasting down (or up) the road. It was a celebratory hike for my 61st birthday and the day couldn't have been nicer.

*** (October 20th) 4th of July Road is very slippery right now and snow/ice covered in spots. Recommended to have good winter or A/T tires and 4wd ***

One of my favorite hikes in the front range. Amazing views the entire way and best of all it’s dog friendly! If you’re going in late September or later I’d recommend some sort of traction device on your feet for the icy spots in the shade near the beginning.
