I did this in a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Willy’s unlimited and had no issues. Beautiful at the top and there were also a lot of people up at the top.

Loved the hike and the peaceful lake.

Although you never lose the sound of I-70, traffic noise is faint and you do get to hear the Georgetown train, which is nice. This a is a nice little trail! It will be spectacular in a few weeks when the aspens turn as most of it is lined by aspens. I saw some golden leaves today, so it's not far off! This would be a good hike for active kids (maybe along with a train ride and/or a visit to one of the mines) since there are QR codes posted so hikers can learn about the mining history.

As other posters commented, this trail is called the 7:30 mine trail to the Griffin Memorial.

2:30 out and back. Other than a tough switchback, it’s pretty flat and easy once you clear the tree line. A must if you enjoy alpine scenery.

A fun hike! I arrived at 6:30am on a Friday and I was the first one on the summit. It has a couple of pretty tough spots on the way up, but it also has some spots that level out to give you a break. The first mile was probably the hardest for me personally. All-in-all it is a great hike if you are trying to build up to doing some 14ers, and it has great 360 degree views at the top.

Fantastic 13er! We were in the parking lot by 8:30 on a Saturday and there was not a ton of traffic on the way up. Certainly more as the day went on, but nothing like some of the 14ers around. Great views and steady incline but nothing ridiculously hard. Would be a good into elevation hike for people!

Great hike with lots of Colorado history. I love exploring old historic ruins and there are a few worth checking out both on and off the designated trail. I mistakenly took the trail to the far left of town and there were a few mining ruins before I found the real trail which is actually called the 7:30 mine trail. Well marked with interactive signs. Only saw 3 other people the entire hike.

Really great hike! Starts out on a gentle uphill through the forest and then opens up. 360 degree view of surrounding mountains. It can be quite windy but it wasn’t bad when we were there! Not hard and has flat spots along the way! We were very pleased with this hike!

Beautiful not to difficult to hike up to the waterfall drive up on a 2015 Jeep Wrangler made it up fine

Absolutely beautiful! There were lil steams on the way up that my dog could drink from. I took the Diamond Lake trail and it was amazing!! EVERYONE had their dogs on leash. I was shook.

It's a pretty straightforward 13er with spectacular views! A lot of incline at first but then its mellows out shortly before the summit.

Great 13er to try, especially when 14er training. I would not say this trail is easy as it’s a steady incline most of the way with a few straight away moments.

The vast majority of the hike is above timberline, so plan bathroom breaks accordingly. There is a great bathroom at the parking lot. Although, during this last visit it was a disaster zone.

Expect windy conditions no matter what day you choose. However, we benefited from a beautiful, sunny day.

The trail to the top and back is closer to 7 miles versus the 6 listed on all trails. The view at the top are spectacular and worth the trek.

Did this trail in a stock 18 tacoma off-road with no issues. Had been there a couple weeks back but had to turn back due to my friends 09 2wd jeep commander not being able to make the rut towards the beginning of the trail, but it looks like someone has filled in one side with some rocks since then. Overall a great trail, anyone with reasonable ground clearance and 4wd should be able to do it. Only gripe is it gets really busy on the weekends

It was a nice, relatively easy drive with the family, I went up in a 4Runner with only a couple inches lift and never felt like I was close to scraping anything. Beautiful scenery. There were lots of people at the top, I counted 35 trucks up there on a Saturday around noon. I thnk calling this trail moderate is a bit much, it's slightly slightly more complicated than what I'd call easy.

I loved this trail. It was a 5/10 difficulty. It basically has two “harder” obstacles at the very beginning but once you get past those it’s great.

The only reason it gets 4 stars is because it’s extremely crowded. There are hikers walking along the road and campers everywhere. If you’re looking to “get away” this isn’t the spot for you.

I went early so there weren't too many cars on the road up. Beautiful views!

Lovely, easy 13er with decent views. Completed back in June when there was still some snow on the route.

Very nice hike, mostly above treeline. Nice views but also very windy for about half the route. Not too busy on a Saturday (8/4/18) but parking lot was full.

A very scenic trail/road that follows a river most of the way up! It is a 4WD road so you may be passed by cars at times but don’t let stop you! If you drive it you miss all the beauty of the river and wildflowers (that are now in full bloom). Once to the first lake keep hiking to the top via a skinny path through the bushes to rise above the lake and see two more. This is a great place to take out of towners for epic views but you’ll need to breaks on the way up with the inclined road and steeper path to the top.

The Destination: Wonderful place for a picnic and/or camping. Beautiful serene lake at altitude. Water is too cold for recreational swimming, but good for fishing. Also, a kayak or paddle board would make for great exploring around the lake rim and up to the waterfall. The lake area doesn't offer much shade. Bring sunscreen, or a cover of some sort (umbrella, lean-to, overland-awning). Remember UV exposure hits harder up here.

The Trail: The trail is more of an access road than trail. Moderately trafficked by SUVS, Trucks, and ATV's. Hikers may not enjoy being passed by off-road vehicles (be courteous 4WD'ers). Trail is suitable for novice drivers and unmodified SUVS/Trucks with 4WD and a little ground clearance. Tire placement will be essential for stock vehicles. I would recommend 9 to 10 inches of ground clearance.

Pros: Easy to access. Great picnic spot. Open areas to play. Good easy hiking up form the loch.
Cons: Easy access (maybe too easy for preservation), Novice trails attract newer less courteous (uneducated) off-roaders and even tourist in rentals.

Ran this in my stock 4Runner with BFG KO2’s with no problem at all. Great trail lots of camping. Make sure to bring your fly rod.

We are a family of four, from Texas, two kids ages 11 and 12. Was a great hike. It was a moderate climb, Our motto is “relentless forward motion”. We were uncertain if we had missed the monument, but kept forging ahead and it’s probably a half mile further than the map shows. The view was definitely worth the time. This took us about three hours in total we estimated it to be 5.5 miles round-trip. Many thanks to the previous reviewer; we appreciate the comments about the lack of parking. We tend to agree drove up and then drive back down I found parking on one of the streets. For those that geocache, look for an extra surprise!

The second gate is now open for summer 2018. Great camping spots along this off road trail that leads right up to the beautiful lake.

Awesome hike! You start at high elevation and will certainly feel it on the way up but it’s a nice steady incline. The views are magnificent along the way and especially above the tree line! Get up there early cause we got caught in a storm with lightening and hail- no joke!

Pack layers, it's chilly and windy at the top! The gradual incline and occasional flat parts made this a really good starter high elevation hike for me (new to CO from NE). It's more of a harsh mountain terrain and not so pretty like some other spots in Arapaho National Forest. Lots of friendly folks out on a Saturday!

Fairly easy, though rocky on the road, so just look down when you hike. All gates open. It was busy with campers. Hiked it from the 4x4 road which made the hike about 6 miles. wildflowers in abundance, might not last with all the dogs off leash, but beautiful. Go up to the 3 lakes above the lock the further up the better flowers. There is also a lions den up there, so be watchful, though with all the people, we never saw any. Get there early for calm waters and less crowds.

Does anyone know if the second gate is open yet so I can drive up to lake?

Very scenic! It’s a nice level of challenge for a shorter hike. You see several clear blue lakes along the way and there are a lot of wildflowers. There’s some rock scrambling towards the top. It gets cold, in early August I was comfortable wearing a hoodie with pants.

I loved this hike! I did it today and it was my first time hiking at high elevation. It was absolutely gorgeous but also pretty hard. But that was due to the elevation that I’m not used to. Definitely worth it!

Great views . Easy trail , need good ground clearance. During the week is not as busy makes it more enjoyable.
