Awesome hiking but not for the faint of heart. Be well acclimated before heading out on this beautiful hike.

8/5/18 - Lovely hike through the forest, up and down on the trail. Trail is well marked. Very nice babbling creek along about 1/2 of the trek; wild flowers are pretty much on/off along the entire trail. The waterfall is quiet nice. Great hike to do if you dont have a lot of time only 2.5 mile out/one way. Definitely will do this hike again.

Good trail for a quick hike! With minimal stopping it took about 35-40 minutes to get up. Since the area at the top is closed, I didn’t go all the way to the cave. Hardly anyone was on the trail once I got past the intersection with the Table Mesa trail (probably due to the fact that the cave is closed for the summer). The trail leading up to that intersection has several offshoots but they seem to all lead back to the main route or they dead-end quickly so you know to turn around. After the intersection the Mallory Cave trail is well marked. Just keep an eye out for the markers. There is a marker where you turn up the hill to get to the final stretch. I saw a couple of hikers turn early, so just a warning- keep going till you see the sign! I’ll probably try trail running this one next time around.

Nice run.

My wife and I did this trail after hiking to Lake Haiyaha. You have to go around Mills Lake first. Great views of Long’s Peak and Keyboards of the Wind among other peaks. Very pretty with lots of wildflowers. The falls from the outlet of Black Lake is very cool. Fairly tiring due to distance - remember you have to come back also - and the elevation gain. Detoured by Alberta Falls on the way back.

First off road trip in Colorado. Went in my 98 TJ with stock suspension and 31in mud terrains. It was very challenging but doable. Took a few scrapes to the bottom but no real damage.

beutiful, the last mile is the hardest and most challenging

Uphill is only 650 gain over 0.7 miles. and back down and then yes up and down again to get back. Wasn't bad at all and well worth the effort. Parking is VERY limited so get there early.

Took two ATVs at the end of June. Heart Attack Hill lived up to its name. Check out our YouTube video going through the chutes. We took the trail start to finish. Amazing variety of butterflies and a good mix of terrain. Saw a lot of mountain lion scat on the trail at the top.

This trail was weirdly quiet as the trail head parking was full on Saturday. The steepness is not that bad as it looks because of the relatively low elevation. The worst part is probably you have to do the ridiculous climb again when you're so close to finish.

Cave was closed for the bats but worth the views and hike anyways. We went from Mesa trail then followed the cave signs

I think this is a moderate/hard hike. The last stretch of the hike was hard but we managed it and my 6 year old did as well. Once you get back about a mile, it gets quieter and has beautiful views. We will hike this trail again.

Loved this trail, definitely requires locking 4x4 in some spots. Made it the whole way in a stock 1991 Land Rover Defender, took the bypass and was still a challenge. If you pick your lines, it can be done. Everyone we met on the trail was awesome, as it can get quite narrow and with blind corners. Keep you eyes peeled!

Is a great ride by bike! Peaceful, quiet, you pass occasional riders or walkers but is not usually too congested. Has a few places to pull over by the river and sit and relax. Is well maintained. A huge plus to this trail is it runs right by some of Fort Collins best Breweries which make for some great pit stops! Love this trail!

Had an absolute blast.! Looked at the "Chute" as I drove by 
2018 Toy 4runner
3" lift
18" wheels
33 in BFG KO2's

We were looking for a moderate hike that wouldn't take all day. This fit the bill perfectly. Very close to town with awesome views!

Clear trails all the way through. Rocky and rough in spots but overall a very enjoyable and beautiful hike.

I am out of shape and was able to survive most of this trail. I wish that I would’ve brought my trekking poles to save my knees on the way down. There was no way I was climbing up that big, steep rock at the end to get to the cave. It was supposedly closed anyway. I did get a little “lost” a few times on the way down.

Hiked Black Lake Trail today...amazing Views the whole way up and did not disappoint. Wish I would have taken microsPikes but still made it in tennies.

The actual cave is closed for the summer to protect the local bat population. However it’s a very casual hike with decent views. Starting from NCAR helps avoid the Chautauqua park crowds.

Attempted to hike this trail with the dogs. About a mile in gun shots could be heard ricocheting through the canyon. Shots were very close to the trail and spooked the dogs. We had to head back to the vehicle without much of an exploration.

Great casual hike. Not too hard and not many steep inclines.

No snow on the trail. Be aware of the ticks.

have done this hike several times. it's a fun quick that isn't too strenuous. beautiful views from many points, but the best is from the cave entrance.

a couple of notes:

1. from Feb through July there is a chain fence halfway up the rock wall. you can't get to the cave entrance during that time. Had I known that, I wouldn't have made the hike.

2. from the NCAR trail drop, down to Mesa trail, during spring it is common to see rattlesnakes on the trail. Be careful, step well over rocks and don't approach any snake!

Great, but tough hike. I would agree with others that the the beginning of the trail up the mountain is challenging.

The hike was pretty doable in a short time from the NCAR building. Pretty well trafficked and sadly the cave isn’t open. Still great views!

Great hike! No issues with the trail when I went Saturday but they put up a fence so you cannot reach the summit anymore. You can still climb up the rock to a ledge to see out, but it’s not as great of a view with the trees out there. Lots of spaces to climb though if you’re interested. I’ll come back again when the fence is down and the cave is open.
