This is our go to trail near Durango with first hikes and folks that don’t hike a lot. It has a fair elevation, great trees, very nice overlooks, beaver dams, beaver chewed tree stumps, and the reward of a pretty lake you can walk around. We call it our highest ROI hike. It’s a great opportunity to try your light/easy/first time 4X4 skills to get to the trail head. It can be done with RWD only and some ground clearance. We did it in a RWD Suburban and once many years ago in a minivan. We think the drive has gotten slightly more difficult since then. We did see a Corolla with a smashed wheel being towed off, so pick your tire spots well.

Wishing for more water for the waterfall, but still beautiful.

Beautiful with options to go farther by taking the connected ouray perimeter trail.

Great hike, not too steep. Pretty short. Amazing fall color views, though the trail doesn't take you through aspen groves. Big lake which unfortunately is down at least 10 feet in these dry conditions, but totally worth hiking this trail. Beautiful hike with amazing views of peaks along the way and moraine lake and wilderness at the end

The trail is 3 miles from the parking lot to the top. The last .8 miles from the fork is really steep. Beautiful views when you get there.

This is one of the prettiest areas in Colorado. Getting all the way to the lake is only possible for a few months during the summer, but still worth the hike even if you get stopped by snow near the top (as I did in May). Be prepared to encounter some gorgeous waterfalls and mountain panoramic views on your way up.

It was a challenge but it was worth it. Wow it view tho!

Steady climb up but the view at the top is more than worth the effort. Great short hike with lots of brilliant yellow Aspens. RT was ~3.5 hours with plenty of time at the top for lunch and water for hiking companion, Daisy the Wonder Dog. Trail is shaded ~75% of the hike. Recommended hike near Durango.

One of the best hikes with a views near Durango.

Spectacular view from the top. Good workout going up the trail.

One of my favorite hikes in the Durango area. We did it today and were thrilled to see very little fire damage. You’ll work to get to the top but the views are well worth the effort.

Beautiful hike. Lake is low but still totally beautiful. We went on a weekday and had the whole lake to ourselves for hours. The scenery on the way up is beautiful! Happy hiking!

Trail is open as of 09/01/18. Great hike! Easy to navigate. Great views! Took us a little over 3 hours from start to finish including stopping for photos.

Pretty views along the way and around the lake at the end. Enjoyable for all not just avid hikers!

Loved this hike! Well maintained and easy to follow. The trail starts out easy and the second half is more strenuous. Most of the climb is after the first mile. Beautiful hike with lots of trees and rocky spots. I was surprised at how colorful the vistas were.

After hiking to the lake and back, we hiked to the pass and abandoned mine. Great weather and you could see for miles

Did this hike on Saturday! Very beautiful. You should Plan to go early as we headed up around 11:30 and got caught in the monsoon rains. We were prepared with rain gear, and continued. The lakes were beautiful. I would say this hike is challenging but not hard. Coming back down was quite slippery and steep. I would suggest walking sticks if you have knee issues. They helped me greatly coming back down. We did not make it to verde lake which is just past the highland Mary lakes, as it was 4 and we were worried about getting back down before more storms.

Real easy, quick trail to do for the afternoon. We wanted to just get the dogs out and have them burn off some energy. They swam quite a bit in the lake, while we sat and enjoyed the scenery. The road is rough to the trailhead. Nice and easy hike.

Amazing walk up hi.... got off track a few times and never made t to the lake due to rain storms yet it was beautiful and. Hike we will want to do again!!

Tried hitting the trail today(8/19/18) and it’s closed due to the 416 fire and mudslides.... bummer

A great hike. The views on this hike are breathtaking. The last mile was pretty difficult with steep grade switch backs. But I do not live in altitude so that made it difficult. But it was so worth it. It was told to me by many a local that the lake was the lowest they’ve seen with the lack of snow this past winter.

Beautiful views!! It was a pretty narrow trail in most places. Steep and such a Great workout. Not very many people on the trail. Locals say to be get to the trails early in Ouray because like clockwork, it almost always storms at noon.

Fantastic hike. The first half of the trail is easy going and the second half contains most of the vertical. Fantastic scenery all along the way. I stopped to fish at the top for an hour with no luck. The view on the way back down was incredible. Make sure your vehicle has good ground clearance as the road has plenty of holes and ditches along the way

I don’t think this is a hard trail. We did it on a Sunday morning. We passed 34 mountain bikers and nine hikers. A lot of shade, a good well marked trail. Took us 3 hours; about 9 miles total from the parking area and back. We went to the right. Counterclockwise was better with the bikers coming the other way.

Closed as of 08/10/2018

Super short, great for little kids, cool water fall to see. Great to see if you are just site seeing around Ouray

Amazing birthday hike. At the beginning parked in parking lot across river so had to wade to get to the trailhead. Not a moderate hike due to technical area thru boulders.. Invigorating swim at the lake!
