Very easy trail. Some narrow spots and switchbacks but very basic - great for beginners. We also camped to watch the meteor shower. Camping spots were plentiful. Really nice, open spaces. It was a great weekend trip!

Does not allow ATVs on the trail because it’s still classified as a county road. All trails needs to better distinguish between OHV allowed and HV.

Wheeler Lake is a great hike for the morning. Start early as Trailhead parking is unpredictable (there’s not a parking lot, just various intersecting roads you can park on the edge). There’s also no Trailhead sign but it’s correctly marked on AllTrails. There’s very little tree coverage and shade on the trail so I recommend sunscreen and a hat. There’s plenty of running water and streams throughout the hike and up to the lake which is great for canine companions. Keep an eye out for vehicles (we didn’t encounter any on our way up but we started at 8am). The lake had tons of wild flowers around it and a rushing waterfall from an upper lake. We sat up there and enjoyed the views and a snack. Keep an eye out for the many marmots near the lake.

If anyone is headed Up Iron Chest Rd, please be on the lookout for a dog that was involved in a Jeep accident (fatality about 3 miles up) this week. He is a young golden doodle named Bentley. He jumped out as the Jeep rolled down 600 ft. The family lives out of state and need help locating him. Please don’t chase him, or whistle etc. Let him come to you . Offer food etc..
Call Teema w any sightings. 316 304 1055. If the general Store is familiar w the story.. There is a reward... I will take the post down when found. Thank You!!!

A great, straight forward trail with tremendous scenic beauty. Numerous places to pull off and enjoy the scenery, camp, or picnic. The trail is open all the way to the summit at about 12500 ft. Once you head down the back side, there's a cut off that trail called by some Crashed Truck Trail. There's a crashed Toyota 350 at the end of the trail. The trail is definitely not EASY and has a few sketchy parts. Don't attempt with a full sized truck!

Did this hike today. Gorgeous views and worth it to get to the top. Incline to the lake is demanding with loose gravel and rocks but so beautiful at the top.

Went yesterday afternoon 8/5/18. Made it to the top where the snow/ice was blocking as most people mentioned. A few of us used ice picks and were able to chisel away enough room that a 2018 Toyota Tundra got through the pass. We even had a Subaru Outback make it through as well. Pretty narrow but doable. Other than that, the views were amazing and the trail itself is perfect even for first timers. Not too technical.

This was a beautiful drive. I would highly recommend it to anyone who new to off road driving. It is very easy, but still beautiful and fun. The Como side was rough, but manageable. I started from the Breckenridge side and though the town was crowded the road really wasn't. Clearly tourists don't know about the road or get nervous in their rental cars.
I will be going back in the fall. Maybe to camp a bit and see the colors. I am sure there will be more people on it then.

Did this in a stock 16 4runner trail. Stock Dunlop tires aired down to 25psi. Was pretty easy no real concerns. Hardest part was coming down the tin cup side of the pass gets really rocky. Also sometimes you have to wait for a cow to cross the road.

Two Conservation officers were clearing snow/ice around 10:30AM this morning. By the time they left, enough was cleared that a side-by-side snuck through....our Jeep did not. A few good hands and some sweat for an hour or so would allow for vehicles to clear....although the drift is heavy ice, not just snow. In any case, we navigated a 12-Point turn in the Jeep at the drift and headed back down. Great trip, great views, worth it! Next time hope to camp.

Hiked this 8.4.18. Spectacular scenery. There were a number of 4x4s that passed me but it’s certainly not heavily trafficked. There’s still a deep chunk of snow at the very top so if you drive this you’re forced to back down til you can turn around. My advice is to hike it, don’t drive it! You’ll get so much more out of it. Look forward to snowshoeing this come winter. It’s a workout, due to the incline and descent. I’d rate it more on the moderate side for hiking.

My happy place.

A beautiful hike with awesome views. We spent a good chunk of time at the top just taking in the beauty of the lake and the incredible wild flowers. My husband and I are in decent shape, in our late 20s to early 30s and it took us a total of 3.5 hours. One of the most beautiful places I’ve seen and a very gratifying hike. Will do again one day.

Great easy 4x4 road IF the snow bank wasn’t blocking the pass. I wish I had checked this app before we went up and listened to the reviewer below. We got to the top where the bank was blocking the road and there is no where to turn around so we had to back down a steep grade incline to get out in a Chevy suburban. I wish the county would put some kind of sign up letting people know you could get stuck up there and you can’t cross. Aside from that spectacular views and plenty of trails off the road.

I just drove this trail last month and its super pretty and a really fun drive. Bad news is that the trail south of the intersection of CR31 and CR31A (the jumbled intersection on the map) has been washed out in a landslide and doesn't exists anymore.. In addition CR31 has a large locked gate crossing it as you make the sharp turn north to head back up to the Million Dollar Highway. This makes the trails just a quick out and back but it is still absolutely worth exploring and taking a drive on.

Absolutely beautiful! Had a bear sighting near Animas Fork. Drove a lot of it in the rain with no issues.

Not "Easy." Road still blocked by snow on 31 July, just 20 yards or so from the summit. One local told me that the snow was still 20 feet deep in mid-July. The drift is still 5 to 10 feet deep. I suspect that the snow will be gone by August 7, and if not then, by 15 August. As previous reviewer noted, you can climb over the snow on foot to reach the pass. Spectacular views before the pass and on the pass after you climb over the drift. This drive is not as "Easy" as the rating suggests. I took my Land Rover LR4 as far as possible. At the blocking drift, the road is too narrow to turn around, which means that you have to back down the narrow rocky and somewhat treacherous road for about 500 yards. I was grateful for the Hill Descent Control feature of my LR4. The guy behind me, also backing up in his Jeep, told me that he was pretty nervous and felt his brakes getting mushy during the steep reverse. Fairly deep ruts at multiple points along the drive. It's okay for 4WD drive vehicles with increased clearance and advanced capabilities, but definitely not for "drive I-70 because we are going skiing" vehicles.

Very pretty trail on mostly open meadows. Does seem like you are walking on an off toad trail

Definitely not an “easy” hike as the elevation is consistent and I wouldn’t take beginner hikers on this. Awesome views, beautiful flowers, 10/10 would do again.

This is a beautiful, relaxing drive. We started in Como and ended in Breck. Lots of places to stop, park, and take pictures or hike on side trails. Trail is full of aspens, this would be a perfect fall drive once they start changing colors. 2WD cars shouldn’t have any troubles here, there were only a few spots with easily navigable potholes. This is a nice alternative to traversing I-70 up to Breck.

Moderate is a massive understatement! This trail was a kick, but it was absolutely challenging. In some spots it was quite intense - our JK rubicon had zero challenges, was impressive. Quite a few wildflowers but they were definitely past their peak.

With amazing views, many camping options, rock climbing, ghost towns, rock hunting, and a trail list to keep you busy for a week. Don't forget your wrench!

The views are great. Lots of tree removal from fire damage and bark beetles, but the trail is clear and on a quiet Wednesday morning, it is peaceful and beautiful.

Ran from Ouray to Telluride, nice to end up at mining ruins. Definitely, need low range transfer case and high clearance. Huge altitude increase, rocky paths but nothing technical or challenging. Bad weather would make it much harder. Heavy traffic going down to Telluride.

Not the most technical trail but the views are hard to beat! Great way to beat the heat in the summer as well when it's 100+ in Grand Junction.

amazing trail. The terrain is easy, but with the elevation this is not quite an "easy" hike like some others I've seen on this app. There was still some snow at the top, and with the rising temps it was a bit slippery coming down, but well worth the climb to get the 360 degree views.

Nice trail with only one drawback — loose dogs and lots of poo on trail. Many dogs off leash in the first mile. Most trail users on the early weekday I went were MTB’rs but plenty of room to get out of their way.
