Great short hike. Mountain views and a great waterfall.
You can cool off at the base of the falls.

Great trail for a half-full day adventure the view at the top is so worth the trek. It may be a tough little hike for small kids, out of shape adults or those tourists coming from sea level so plan accordingly. I will do this one once a year now that I know its there.

We were able to visit the falls Easter morning. Someone had placed plastic eggs along the trail which made it extra special for the kids.

Trail was an extremely easy hike with amazing views. We hiked this trail in early December and the water fall was still flowing great! The hike is quite a ways from Pagosa Springs but well worth the drive. If you are going in the winter do not drive a car there. Make sure you have a SUV or truck with 4X4. The last 8 miles to the trail is narrow and not travel much. However, do not let this deter you, if you have a 4X4 the road is manageable. Last note, make sure google takes you to the right road it did not take us to the right road first. You want to take the road that ends on 637. Great hike must do!

Beautiful scenic view at the very end. Aspens just happened to be turning. Gorgeous! ♡

Beautiful hike along the river with mountain and cliff views. Nice meadows for a picnic. We went to the bridge before turning back, it was a nice 2 hour hike.

Nice steady ascent. Nothing difficult. Good views of Vallecito lake and dam on the ascent, but no views to speak of at the top. Good for 2 hour hike.

A wonderful trail! Slightly longer than what AllTrails says, but worth every step. One of the best we’ve ever tackled.

Did this trail the first part of Nov. Absolutely beautiful and a good family trail. Beware of the horse/mule trackings; while it is beautiful countryside, there is significant trail wear from the mule/horses. Still! It is worth the trek. I hiked this trail with my 66 y/o father and we loved it. Cozy enough to wear a mid layer sweater and get to it! Get outside, Colorado!

Hiked on 10/27. Doable for sure but lots of snow— wish I would have had spikes but can be carefully done without. If you have gaiters use them. My feet were soaked.

I was plenty warm with a long sleeve and puffy vest.

The directions lead you to trailhead accurately.

I went on past ice lake but could not make it to island lake as the tracks stop right now due to snow.

I’m 34 and in good shape and it took me about 2:45 to get to ice lake. I also drank near 5L of water. Totally epic views if you follow tracks up about another 500-800 feet of vert— about 1/2 mile distance.

Breath-taking in more ways than one and our favorite hike on our honeymoon. The 'difficult' rating is no joke for low-elevation folk like we are, but it was worth the sweat. Above the treeline it's like Tolkien county, a different world than our Minnesota. We hiked on a Sunday in late September; we started early - around 7:30 - and only ran into a few other hikers. It was much busier on the descent.

Very well traveled with magnificent views

A hike with everything you could ask for. Flat open areas to rocky narrow inclines. took my wife and I about 3 1/2 hrs with frequent small breaks and 20 min at the falls. Amazing views throughout and very cool end at the towering falls. The last 30 min to the falls is the toughest. Hike back is much easier than the hike in. highly recommend

Most beautiful hike I've even been on. The reward at the top is unbelieveable. I've never seen anything like it. The wildflowers were blooming like crazy when we went in the end of August. It was very difficult for us being from Nebraska due to the elevation but I would do it again!

Short hike but moderately challenging if you take the rout on the right. Easy to access and great for a quick nature fix.

This hike was truly incredible. Went on 9/28/18. Amazing views, so much to do, waterfalls to climb while on you’re way up, etc. Weather was perfect!!Getting to see that beautiful blue water was so worth all the effort to get up there. Pictures can’t show how clear and blue it really is. I highly recommend hiking the summit peak directly behind Ice Lakes. You will have a great birds eye view of the lake, you can see the other side of the mountain, and I got LTE up there to make a FaceTime call!

Take plenty of water and snacks. The hardest part is the very end of the hike as it becomes really steep before you hit the ice lake. I will definitely be back!

As beautiful as this lake was, I say Columbine Lake was even more beautiful and there was more to explore and do. We went on back to back days and I highly recommend both!

The best hike I have ever done - and I've been on many hikes throughout the US. The bluest blue I have ever seen in a lake - rivals Crater Lake in Oregon. Definitely worth the lack of oxygen... Took us around five and a half hours round trip with many many stops to catch our breath and take in the scenery. We are in our early 30's, pretty good physical shape, but we're flat landers from below sea level so the elevation change really tired us out... bring plenty of water (we ran out of 2L before the end of the hike) and snacks.. best to come early so that you can take your time and stop as often as needed. Listen to your body especially if you are from below sea level. Saw many dogs and a few kids doing the trail as well. The first lake is within 2.25 miles of the start and the 2nd lake (Ice lake) is another mile after that at around 3.5. My app calculated 7.20 miles round trip. There is another lake after Ice lake but we didn't have time nor energy to get there.

Absolutely beautiful hike. The end makes the long drive worth it. We'll marked and easy to find.

Amazing! Recommend to anyone. Be prepared and start early, met many hikers that did not bring enough water and food.

One of the most beautiful hikes that I’ve ever gone! Prime color season so it was amazing.

Went in late September. The weather was perfect and the fall colors were at peak season. The hike is not long, but the first half is straight uphill, so be prepared for a workout. The lake is amazing and well worth the work it takes to get there.

Short hike, beautiful falls.

I LOVE THIS HIKE! The first time I did it was a few years ago for 4th of July, and unfortunately the lake was iced over, but the plants were in full bloom and so pretty! The second time was this year for labor day and The lake was amazing and there was no snow, however all the plants were dying. I would recommend doing this hike early August to mid August. This hike literally has all four seasons. It was sunny to start and then rained and snowed all in one hike lol. The hike isn't too bad as far as toughness but it will have your heart going. We also hiked to island lake and it was a lot closer than expected, it isn't too far from ice lake. I highly recommend just pushing a little further. There is just so much to see on this hike.
As far a the road getting there it isn't bad, you don't need a 4WD unlike other hikes in this area.

To wouldn’t rate this as hard per se. The switchbacks are consistent but nothing super hard. It tools us 1.5 hours up with breaks and about 1 hour down. It was a good trail because of the views of the distance mountains and the fall colors. When you get to the lake, there are a few logs to rest and have a snack. Our dog ran into the lake for some water and cams out muddy. There is a stream at the start of the trail. There is not much shade hiking up, so where sunscreen.

on Ice Lake Basin Trail

Ice Lake Basin and Island Lake are the most beautiful trail in Colorado IMHO.

Beetle kill trees along the beginning but stunning 360 view at the end. Changing aspens were a treat.

One of my favorite 14er hikes. Mid-sept is a great time of year to hike with the great temps and changing aspens. I stayed on the main trail and did the out-and-back from Sunshine; didn’t follow any shortcuts (seriously bad erosion happening and unnecessary steepness). My round trip clocked in at 13miles, 7.5 hours.

The AllTrails map is not accurate! Just be aware that it is often off the actual trail by quite a bit (like a hundred meters). However, it's relatively easy to figure out where to go and to keep the trail. Follow the ridge line. I suggest that after you summit Conejos Peak that you hit the second 13er and then follow the ridge of the bowl all the way around and above Tobacco lake. Great views!!!

One of my favorites. This trail is increasingly popular so getting an early start is key if you’re interested in a quieter experience. Catching the sunset from the upper basin is incredible and completely worth it — be bear aware if you are going up ahead of the crowds, and definitely push for Island Lake if you’ve got the time!

You won’t hold the consistent (and, at times a bit brutal, haha) elevation gain against this trail when you see the payoff at the end. The lakes are unbelievably beautiful and the views are insane.

Amazing
