HikingSnow

Hiked 4/18 after the 10 inches of snow. This would not have been possible without snowshoes today. The snow was packed down in the trees/on the Colorado lines switchbacks, although we still wore snow shores on this section. Once coming out of the trees we were able to follow ski tracks. Once we rounded the curve of the mountain where you can see the false summit we broke trail. We made it to 2.5 miles before deciding to turn around as the clouds were descending and visibility was low and temps were dropping. The wind was minimal which was such a pleasant surprise and hard to come by on Flora. The hardest part was traversing along the 27-30 degree angle on the fresh snow probably around the 1.3-1.8ish mile mark, this is an estimate (mile markers on the way up).

Watch out for skiers. They think they own the trail and will not move out of the way for you. Overall a really fun trail to hike.

Moderate ascent at the beginning. Lots of snow cover - cramp-ons a good idea. Due to snow coverage not able to complete the hike. Saw one other person.

Very pretty sights- went about 3 days ago and would say about 35 - 45% was still pretty icy/snow covered but doable in normal hiking boots! Goodie this one, made it up to a river flow just about 20 minutes past the mine, great place to stop & sit for a bit.

Nice, moderate winter 14er. The road is plowed and completely free of snow until about 2 miles from the summer TH - this’ll add about 700ish feet of elevation gain. We clocked this at just about 11 miles and around 3.5k of gain. As of 4/10, there’s a well-defined trail all the way up, and plenty of spots where the snow has completely melted / blown away. We only needed spikes for the last 500 or so feet. Left my snowshoes in the car - they would’ve been completely overkill. On the way up the road, cut across the flat area (I think it’s a pond in the Summer) before the last switchback on your way up the road rather than walking all the way up to the parking area with restrooms - it’ll save you a few feet. Fairly crowded on a Saturday in early spring, with lots of people having to park farther down the road.

4/14/21 Light snow covers a large portion of the trail but you don’t need spikes/poles. Trail on a Wednesday was really quiet - there was only one other car when I arrived at 2pm. Beautiful views at the top and not too difficult.

It is mid April. Road leading to the trailhead is still closed. I tried to find info online about whether or not it was open yet since I’d read that they close it for winter. Not at all angry. There is still quite a bit of snow. Just wanted to write a review in case anyone else needed info.

Don’t attempt without snow shoes past the road portion. Trail was a bit hard to follow towards the end, borderline nonexistent. Wasn’t crazy difficult, just long without proper gear. Strong winds once you get near the lake in the valley.

So beautiful! Nice weather today and excellent views! You definitely still need snow shoes on this trail. When I got to the trail at 10:30 there was ice in the shade and some snow in the sun was already softening and making it difficult to walk. I started with yak trax But switch over to snowshoes about 3/4 of the way to Herman lake. Also the trail splits to the left which will not take you to Herman lake. Stay to the right, in the trees.

Trail is mostly dry until about 4 miles in (just before the intersection with Brookside McCurdy). At that point, there are still a couple feet of snow with frozen postholes for a path until the pass. No need for snowshoes (although snow was mostly frozen for me); traction was very helpful.

Hiked on 4/10/21. We followed the Spruce Creek trail the entire way, and it was pretty packed down up until the turn off for turn off for Mayflower Lakes. Afterwards the snow was loose, deep, and slushy. That being said, I would recommend snowshoes for the entire trek to prevent any post-holing (a lot of the trail was pretty destroyed from people stepping on in soft spots and falling up to their thighs). After Mayflower we continued up to Upper Mohawk - just past the cabin it became steep and there wasn’t really a defined trail, but it was pretty manageable to make our own switchbacks with snowshoes and poles. Recommend starting early and bringing snowshoes or skis. The whole thing took us about 3.5 hours.

Glad I brought micro spikes, not totally necessary but super helpful. Lots of post holing, so stay on the beaten trail.

Great hike, beautiful views! Only saw 2 other people. Still plenty of snow left. Didn’t need snowshoes on the way up, but did on the way back once the snow warmed and softened.
