on Emerald Lake Trail

We carried 2 babies in packs up to these lakes during heavy snow. There is steady elevation which may be difficult for people carrying kids or people who aren’t fully ready for the altitude, but the built in rewards of each lake made it a hike not to miss! It wasn’t too slippery even in the snow. It was definitely busy but don’t let that deter you!

My parents visiting from low altitude came along and they said the trail was definitely misleading being called “easy.” I agree... I think it is NOT an easy trail for inexperienced hikers or people brand new to altitude. It is probably best described as moderate.

Amazing hike! Trail was a little bit icy, we hiked mid October

Challenging on the way up, but worth it. We hiked around 1pm and it took us 1.5 hours to get to the top. We encountered many other hikers. Unfortunately, this trail attracts a lot of people who don’t have respect for nature. It was hard to get a good picture with so many people around and it was even harder to enjoy with the amount of people talking around you. If I could do it again, i would go at 7 AM and avoid the crowds. This hidden little “lake” truly is a gem. Side note: it only took us 40 minutes to get back down.

Great hike, great workout. View at the top is worth it. Took our group around an hour to get to the top of the stairs and another hour and twenty minutes to hike back down Barr trail.

hiking poles and spikes are a must this time of the year with frozen trail on about 90% of the way. though regret not having brought my ski gloves and pants as i was digging in over 2 ft of snow in some areas last week, but the views were well worth the challenge. good thing about hiking this time of the year is bears are asleep and you just need to hike up and slide all the way back down! ;) go easy and enjoy

We were celebrating our ten year anniversary and decided to try out this hike that was supposed to be fairly easy. I have a shoulder injury and a bad back so this hike felt slightly more moderate to me. But it was my first time hiking as well so I didn’t know what to expect. I left the mountain telling my husband it was one of the best days of my life. Next to the Grand Canyon it absolutely was the most magnificent view. Definitely hike all the way up if you can. The last part of the hike between dream lake and emerald lake was lots of stairs which was the hardest part. But even with the snow and ice it was not so bad with lots of breaks. The path is well maintained and as mentioned there’s lots of friends to meet along the way. If you can go when the snow is on the trees then do it. It truly was breathtaking and we didn’t have any problems with the wind at all so we must have gotten lucky. Happy hiking!

Hiked this one today, it my was my first 14er but I’ve been living In Colorado and hike rather frequently. Got to the parking lot at 9am and found open parking. The hike is long and mainly flat for the first hour, then starts climbing slowly and ends with a rock scramble up the last few hundred feet to the summit. Lots of packed down snow and icy/ slippery patches going up made it feel like walking in sand, very tiring. Coming down extremely slippery. If you do this one in the snow you absolutely need poles and yak tracks. Took lots of breaks along the way and had a picnic at the top. Took us 7hours round trip. Overall beautiful views and not too Terrible, snow made things slightly more challenging.

Today it was pretty icy at parts, but definitely worth it. We survived in regular tennis shoes with a couple slips here and there. The views were incredible, both of the mountains at large and all the lakes you come across. Highly recommend going early in the morning as the trail traffic was pretty high and only seemed more crowded as we were leaving.

Fun hike my only warning is most of the trail is icy so crampons, microspikes, etc would really be beneficial. If you don’t have them it might add to the hike time.. wanted to continue on to Andrews glacier but without proper equipment it left me wondering for another day.

Hiked this today. Most of the trail is covered in snow and ice— definitely need microspikes, especially for the last half mile. Past Lake of Glass the trail is hard to find. Snow is deep and the path beat in through the snow is not the actual trail and can be hard to follow. Weather was absolutely perfect!

Great hike. Beautiful view up at lake.

This trail has amazing views of the mountains and multiple lakes along the way. It was a bit slippery but once your muscles get used to it, it isn't too bad.

My wife and I made it all the way up with only our hiking boots. We both agree that going up with crampons would have been better. We had one slip/fall on an icy decline. Plus going up the water fall just below Lake of Glass was a little dicey, but a decent amount of people made it up and back down. We enjoyed trotting our snow pants up and put them on for the decent so we could “sled” down some of the steeper areas. Others were jealous. Overall we loved our trip. Walked over a frozen lake and Sky pond was just beautiful to celebrate our 5th anniversary.

I did this hike 2 years ago and it remains to be one of my favorites. The trail is covered in packed snow the entire way, so I would definitely recommend having micro spikes on hand. It can definitely be done without spikes, but it just might be a little slower/harder/more slippery. Once you get above tree line you might find yourself following footpaths that are definitely not the real trail, but it will get you up to the trail junction between Chasm Lake and Boulderfield one way or another. A breathtaking view of Longs is visible for most of the hike (above tree line) but it’s even more amazing to have it looming above you once you’re finally at the lake.

Really beautiful and super fun, but definitely needed our crampons. Poles would have been helpful on occasion as well. I wouldn’t advise doing this one so late in the season unless you have the right gear for snow and ice.

Fantastic hike with awesome views. Perfect length for a good workout, yet not to strenuous. Great for families!

Full on winter conditions up there now. Micro-spikes or other traction control would be advisable. The trail is well packed snow/ice. I didn't go further than Sky Pond due to the deep snow.

The trail was pretty icy and snowy, but our hiking boots worked just fine. If you have spikes or hiking poles I recommend bringing them along. The view at the top was definitely worth the climb. The water pump at the trailhead was closed down, so make sure to fill up waters beforehand.

Nice hike for the whole family (including dogs). Short uphill climb to the glacier and a great view, you can spend more time hanging out or walking up and around the glacier if you want. Parking lots are a little rocky and have a $5 fee.

Amazing and challenging hike. Chasm lake with a little bit of snow on the ground was quite a sight to see. Once you break through the forest the views are breathtaking.

Beautiful trail!! Couldn’t make it up the waterfall (covered in ice) without crampons but the views were still gorgeous.

Recent snow made the trail slushy and icy but the views were worth the challenge! Bring hiking poles and maybe splurge on some spikes and you’ll be fine!

As Galen noted below, heavy snow drifts up above Lake of Glass. Difficult to distinguish any trail in the snow. Found myself somewhat unprepared for this level of snow. I felt this trail was overrated, but I bet the experience is better in the summer.

Beautiful day on the trail on 10/14. Lots of fresh powder came in overnight. Some areas were quite icy, but it was very manageable if you come prepared and aren't hiking in sneakers. We saw less than 10 people total during our 3 hours out. Views were limited by the snow clouds, but it was still spectacular!
