Great views of the city

Beautiful view with the snow and lake. Highly recommend spikes.

Hiked a few weeks ago. Cool historic site early on, heavy traffic, pretty challenging on the way back up. Great day hike!

very easy but pretty place. only did about 3 miles but I like it out here

Short bit difficult; went in March (3/14/18) and very icy. Made harder and less fun. Want to go back

I definitely recommend crampons/shoe spikes!! Very necessary. Very steep slick icy spots still, saw multiple people slip! It’s totally worth the incline up!!!

Beautiful lake.

Beautiful spring hike! It’s a long hike to the end, but the views throughout were awesome! We saw big horn sheep and a followed the creek throughout. Afterwards we hit the dunes. Made for a great day.

I love this trail! It was difficult going uphill with the snow but hiking shoes and yaktrax were sufficient. I have hiked this in the summer as well and though I missed the beautiful lake at the top, it was cool to see the trail from a wintry perspective. The solitude was much needed and appreciated as I only saw a couple other hikers. Took about 3 hours round trip.

Awesome hike. The way up is almost as enjoyable as the view at the top. Slick in many places. We started by 9 and didn’t see too many people. We also did Horsethief and checked out the frozen waterfall. A great day.

Steady climb but easy pace and well trafficked. Nice reward at the top.

Icy, but beautiful & worth the effort.

This trail has incredible views throughout! It starts of with a lot of up via several switchbacks but then you get to cruise and enjoy the views so the hard part is worth it. As of March 11 there were a few areas that still had some hard-packed snow and/or ice but overall not very much and I didn’t have any trouble with it in just boots. There were a good number of people hiking and biking on a Sunday afternoon but it didn’t feel crowded to me on the trail. You do need to keep an eye out for bikers- we always had plenty of time to step to the side though. Great trail!

Great hike, moderate incline, lots of gorgeous views and pretty long. Feels like a workout, but just keep going! If you reach the picnic benches, you are almost to the ruins!! Still some ice in the shadier places, but mostly dry and warm in the sun.

Don’t let the trailhead fool you! The path gets extremely(!!) steep and slick. Even with crampons it was tough! Saw lots of people attempting it with Converse/Nikes/Keds and slipping or having to just slide down. Many people turning back halfway too. Ice spikes are a must!

Great hike did it yesterday 03-10 about 3 Miles round trip.. beautiful lake the water was just as pristine as u can imagine and waterfall .. the trail is somewhat doable without micro spikes but highly recommend them because a few places were pretty slippery

We took bear canyon up which was longer than shadow or fern but had some nice pine covered areas. The last summit up to the peak was pretty challenging as it was very steep and straight up. Took my chihuahua and he did great. Once at Bear peak the view is unbelievable! We took shadow canyon down as others said fern canyon was too icy and slippery without micro spikes. Shadow was so rocky not very diverse terrain but not slippery. Somehow got lost connecting back to Mesa trail after shadow and hiked an extra couple miles, next time I’ll take a map. It’s easy to hike south boulder peak from bear and south boulder peak (not bear as I was told) is the actual highest peak in Boulder, maybe next time. Overall a great hike!

Great steady incline with beautiful views. I was just expecting a little more at the top.

Fantastic trail. We hiked up Turkey Trot (no bikes) and down Castle Trail (bikes on it). We didn't go all the way to the end of the Castle Trail. We turned around at the pavilion with picnic tables.

We did the hike between 11am-1:30pm on a Saturday, and while the parking lot was packed (and cars were parked up the road a 200 yards) the trail didn't feel that crowded. Everyone was super friendly. There were a lot of dogs on the trail but all were on leash and the trail was wide enough so plenty of room to pass.

The trails were very dry...just a few short patches of slush/snow but easy to navigate and no risk of slippage.

Beautiful views!! Went in March and it was very snowy. But if you stop at the visitor center you can rent yaktrax for free. They helped immensely! The trail does have a few steep inclines that posed a fun challenge with the snow - again have some sort of boot/shoe grip if in winter months. Couldn’t stop smiling during my hike. I will be coming back for sure.

Make sure to wear ice spikes! Can be pretty slippery. Great views and a great hiking workout - uphill madness!

Unbelievable views. Just doesn’t get any better. Came in March and it was 40 degrees out. On the dunes felt about 60. Hikes down the dunes barefoot. This was the most strenuous hike for me yet. Just when you think you’re in relatively good shape..

Fun hike, needed my microspikes. Trail was snow packed and ice after the first 600 or so feet. People without traction devices were having lots of problems. Beautiful ice on the falls. Crystal clear water. I will definitely be back in the spring.

One of my favorite trails. There's a good climb, then a nice stroll through aspen trees. It's definitely a repeater trail.

Beautiful views. Easy rather than moderate.

This place is beautiful ❤ to get here there is about an hour and a half of just road, no gas stations, no bathrooms. There is a couple of miles of only dirt roads. once you get there the first overlook has a very clean bathroom. The second overlook not far from the first has just a parking area. Again, this place is beautiful, it's like you are on another planet.

Started at 6 am...was a little disappointed that after hiking all day....the summit house only had t-shirts that said I Hiked from the car....way too commercialized....and too many people. Prefer less crowded 14ers....

Gorgeous views all along this heavily trafficked trail. Lots of people, even for a Monday morning. Some icy/snowy spots - spikes would be handy but not necessary. Overall good hike, I will be back!

loved the trail for it's amazing views! Bring a buddy and another car if you don't want to hike up the mountain. you can just hike down. go on a weekday if you hate people. for the reviewers who are bummed out about unleashed dogs - how is the opportunity to pet a friendly pupper a bad thing?

This is a really nice, relaxed hike. We did it with microspikes on 3/4/2018. Most people had snowshoes, but they weren't needed if you stayed on the packed trail.
