Great hike. moderate is a fair rating based on a regular hiker. Good elevation gain but short distance. Good payoff for moderate effort. Both lower and and upper seemed to have nice campsites. No snow as of 10/24. Noticed the time changed to Mountain on our phones between lower and upper. Bringing the fishing pole next year.

Moderate wouldn't be the best way to describe this hike. There is a lot of different terrain which keeps it fun but theres a large area of rocky terrain that can be challenging to walk up (even though there is a slight path created) especially after fast incline with shakey legs! it is beautiful but bring spikes just in case anytime after October as it can get icy on a very narrow trail just at the top. One of the most beautiful and serene hikes I've done. Dogs should be leashed ALWAYS but on this trail we saw some un leashed dogs and it could be very dangerous for even well behaved pups.

This was one of my favorite backpacking hikes ever. We camped at Pearl and did a day hike to Dalton, well worth it. All of the lakes were gorgeous and the hike was moderate to Pearl, hard if you go onto Dalton because of the extra distance. I do not consider myself an avid hiker and more casual.

We backpacked in and camped at Upper Stevens Lake. Their were a couple very nice camping sites at both lakes. I would not consider myself an avid hiker and it was challenging but the moderate was accurate due to the short distance. I would highly recommend and on my top five places I've hiked.

This is a great trail. Easy directions to drive to the trailhead. Bathroom there. Plenty of parking. However...I would not consider it MODERATE. Any trail that you traverse a large rock shale slide should be hard. And should be mentioned. People hiking with dogs need to know this as well. There are also a lot of large root steps. I found this hike challenging and would definitely do it again but for my companion who does not hike a lot, it was not enjoyable. Beautiful lake at the top and gorgeous tamaracks in yellow right now.

Nice area with plenty of parking. The start of the trailhead was well marked but about a half mile into the hike we came to a clear landing. There was a logging road on our right side and a poorly marked path straight ahead. The actual trail is straight ahead (not on the right side where the logging road is). We ended up turning around because the trail was overgrown and hard to follow. If you do go on this trail, just make sure to follow the map AllTrails provides and not go on the logging road like we accidentally did.
Still made for a beautiful fall day and still worth while.

This hike was awesome in the fall! The colors were incredible (check out my pics), but the weather was a little iffy with sideways rain/wind. September was the perfect time with gorgeous fall colors. In October or later, I'd expect knee deep snow.

Gorgeous views but you have to work for it! The fall colors are in full effect & we were surprised to be greeted by snow along certain sections of the trail.

The start of the trail is quite steep & definitely gets your heart pumping & calves burning. The scenery is beautiful & the lake at the end is worth the work. Certain parts of the trail weren't marked as well as others but there were several groups of hikers so we followed the footprints in the snow higher up.

Wonderful day hike!

October - Early Fall

Lone Lake offers easy access to some beautiful views of a lower alpine lake.

Much like Stevens Lake, what makes this lake appealing is it’s location. Near the freeway and requiring only about 5 minutes of mild service road driving makes this a great hike for people that aren’t equipped to hit more treacherous mountain roads.

The trail itself is relatively easy, about 2.5 miles to the lake, and the elevation gain isn’t too steep. Should be able to reach the lake in about an hour and a half.

I wouldn’t recommend backpacking for this lake. We only saw one decent campsite around the entire lake. Definitely stick to Stevens lake for that.

Finding the trail can be a little difficult however. We were actually stopped by a group informing us that we were going the wrong way, and that they hiked 2 or more miles without finding the lake. On further investigation, the trail listed on AllTrails starts on a road, and then exits onto a more abandoned looking ATV trail, before the actual trail is marked and starts. The only marking to indicate it is the trail is a small little sign that reads “Trail” that isn’t completely visible from the road.

Aside from that, would definitely recommend this one.

Hiked to upper Stevens and stayed the night. The trail to the lake was well traveled and was a lot of fun to hike. The autumn colors were amazing, the mountains were red at the top and yellow and orange plants near the trail. The waterfall this time of year was barely a trickle, but it was still neat to see the large granite formations and crevasses where the waterfall was.

Camping at the lake was fun, but got below freezing and was very windy all night. We even had snow falling in the morning which was actually a treat. There are about four good camping spots at lower Stevens and a couple at upper.

I would recommend the hike for anyone who likes short hikes up hill and great mountain views.

Beautiful hike with epic waterfalls!

This is a really great trail especially now with fall colors! Trail wasn’t very crowded but has some spectacular views! Both lakes are really cool and you can continue to a third if you please! Lots of camping room by the lake as well! Follow all our adventures on Instagram @themicrotourists.

Great trail! My friend & I day hiked in with our dogs. The colors are so beautiful right now. the hike starts off with a decent incline and levels off to a big open valley before a final smaller incline up to the lake. There's an option to hike to the upper lake as well. There is also a waterfall about 1.5 miles in if you go off the beaten path. Nice Idaho gem.

Slightly aggressive if you go off the main to save some time. Lower lake is clear and cold with nice views.

Three of us and a dog hiked to the lake in the late afternoon and had a great hike with lots of shade. Arriving at the lake we found only one fairly level spot to put a small tent. We dropped packs and boiled some lake water. I set off with the dog to scout around the lake for a more level spot to pitch a tent. On the opposite side I did find a level spot just big enough to put two small 2 person tents side by side. We did not see anyone on the trail on the way and had the lake to ourselves all night. The wind was really crazy all night long. Did not have any trouble with bugs near the lake at all. Was awakened by my dog growling at something outside the tent. I made some noise and calmed the dog down and went back to sleep......no further problems. Don't know what it was, but it left. Hiked out in the 8 am time and encountered 2 separate hikers on the trail out. Hiking boots that FIT CORRECTLY are a MUST on this trail or the toes will take a beating on the decent out. This was another great hike to an alpine lake I highly recommend. We went on Labor Day weekend and still had the lake to ourselves all night!

The directions on here were wrong for me. They took me up an old logging road which ended up being closed when you can just go straight into superior and follow the signs off the exit to the trailhead. Getting to heart is easy and then getting to pearl and dalton is a little more intense. Heart to pearl trail is a little overgrown. Keep on the trail going around pearls and the trail to dalton is very visible. I did this as a day hike. Had some fish nibbles in heart, skipped fishing and pearl, and had big fish nibbling and jumping at Dalton.

Beautiful trail. last mile in was the hardest, but with a few switchbacks it makes it very doable!! We base camped at heart lake 3 days and took day hikes up to Pearl lake and Dalton lake, and also to the state line ridge and hidden lake! it was Absolutely beautiful all of it! We camped at the south eastern end of the lake. Awesome spot!! fresh water near camp and goats to entertain us....although they did get abit too curious! Just had to clap and stomp and they scared away...

Such a beautiful, shaded hike. Will hike this trail, again and again.

Great hike! I would say this is on the harder side of moderate. But worth the uphill climb.

Beautiful, rained the entire way but still so beautiful

what a beautiful hike! will definitely be going again...maybe when the weather is warmer so we can take a dip in the lake.

i took three friends and my dog on this hike today. My second time, their first. The trail was in pretty good shape, a bit overgrown in places but manageable. Upon reaching the lake we were greeted by wind, fog and a temp of 41 degrees. We had planned to eat our lunch at the lake and explore but the weather curtailed those plans. I was disappointed as my previous trip was in June 2017, and the day was beautiful, great to explore the area and have some lunch. Have to go back!

Very pretty lake and nice trail leading up to it, much of it near/along the creek. It is quite steep so it will definitely get the blood pumping. We didn’t spend much time exploring at the lake, but there were multiple camping spots that all looked pretty good right when you arrive. We saw some folks at the far end of the lower lake swimming and I think camping too. There were still a few pockets of snow nestled in some of surrounding peaks and this was early August. All in all, great hike to a cute little lake. We did this Sunday early afternoon and the trail was well traveled. We ran into at least 6 other parties + we could see others already at the lake.

great hike for kids!
