It’s been snowing all week and the full hike (from beginning of Denny Creek rd) was just beautiful. The falls were half way frozen and it was great to experience. I went alone so it was nice to see a decent amount of people there.

Did this hike on March 10 - super clear day and great hike. The hike is ~50% packed snow, so I’d recommend micro spikes but definitely doable without. Great view on a clear day.

Mostly incline, but manageable. Nice tranquil hike, well maintained, well marked, no bathroom facilities. Parking off road.

Beautiful views of water, islands and mountains - what more can you ask for?

Roads were closed on both sides. Ended up hiking a total of 8 gorgeous miles today. The wagon trail is not open, don't take that as a loop back as one of the signs suggests... you'll end up walking through very deep snow. TAKE ICE CLEATS! The whole main trail is compacted snow and ice. One hiker slid down the hill at the falls today but was able to get back up. The trail right at the water fall is steep and icy, be extremely cautious. GORGEOUS hike though!!!

I listened to the reviews and bought some micro spikes for my first time... I encourage everyone to do the same - you won't regret it!!

Amazing Sunday to hike, arrived at 945am and there were already 7 rows of cars parked. When they say this one is popular, they totally mean it. When I left around 330pm I saw there were cars parked even outside on the road. The first half of the trail is normal train but it’s a climb, you start going up right away. The second half I would highly recommend micro spikes. Those without looked nervous and had to go at beyond a snails pace and it didn’t look like they were having fun. The view at the top was totally worth the climb. 100% worth it. I didn’t tackle haystack but there was a ton of snow at the top and I was hiking solo. Will try again in the summer when the snow is clear but I head out way earlier in the morning.

Love the lake, the view it’s amazing

Weather was amazing which allowed for a spectacular view. Trail traffic was heavy. Many hikers turned around due to lack of micro spikes. You will need them for most of the trail.

This must be one of my favorite, if not "the" favorite hike - it has really just about everything: an adventurous drive to the trail-head (more on that later), a forest to start your hike in, a lush mountain meadow, plenty of snow-fields (mid July) all the way to a rock-scrambling part to the lookout at the end. And the views, oh my, the views. Going up, they are beautiful already but once you make it to the ridge that will get you to the lookout, you're in for a real treat. I just wish we had known that it was possible to stay overnight in the lookout - sunset and sunrise must be absolutely stunning from there.
The hike itself is not easy and the last part would be tough for people with vertigo but otherwise we didn't think it was too difficult. It's easily manageable in an afternoon even if you take plenty of time to soak in the views at the top. We saw a bear and a pica rabbit too.
Oh, and I almost forgot, the drive. I saw cars parked at the trail-head that had pretty low clearance, so it must be possible to get there in just about anything but I was really happy that we took a rental 4WD SUV. The forest road is quite steep in places and littered with potholes large enough to break your axle in, so having a higher clearance vehicle comes in handy.
Overall, if there is just one hike you are going to do in this part of the park, make it this one!

Great hike! Micro spikes definitely a plus for most of the trail. No views from the top but beautiful day with everything covered in fresh snow.

5 starts for hot spring... 3 stars for the hike, trail is in rough shape

This was a fun hike! Lots of elevation gain which made for a great workout. The view at the top was fantastic even though it was cloudy. I saw a few small birds and a raven. Micro spikes for the bottom of your boots will make this hike much safer especially when you are descending as there are some icy patches. The trail is heavily used so the snow is well compacted.

Great Winter Hike. Was Snowing from Half way to the summit. Micro Spikes Needed.

Steep hike, particularly in the winter with lots of snow. Bring snowshoes if going in the winter, but you can make it without if you know what you’re doing. Amazing views on a clear day. Even a frozen lake is worth it.

This is a great trail highly recommend doing it, it is moderately hard however the view is definitely worth it!

Loved this beach hike. Truthfully I enjoyed the shark fin shaped rocks more than the hole in the wall. Beautiful and worth slip sliding in the beach rocks. If you go at high tide you will need to find a way around the water that runs into the ocean. There are a lot of fallin trees that you can use to get across.

Hiked from Exit 47 at road closure. 7 miles RT. Approximately 5 miles of it is walking on the closed road that runs beside I90. Road was compact snow with some deep snow areas but there was an area worn down in the deeper snow areas. I wore microspikes and would recommend them. It was a beautiful day and I was pleasantly surprised to have the falls to myself. The falls are not completely frozen but the surrounded by beautiful ice.

Road remains closed so expect the 7.1 mile round trip walk in the woods. Started early in the morning and the road was icy with plenty of grooves from snowmobile tracks. Microspikes will serve you well and some warm boots. Snowshoes are not necessary, though if you want to carry them for weight, go for it. Trail is easy to find and has compact snow to lead you to the falls. The falls was flowing and plenty of icicles to add depth to the photos. This morning was not slushy and the ice looks like it’ll stay. Dress warm, gloves hats, you name it because it definitely is chilly by the falls. We passed 64 people and about 30 cars parked on the sides on the way back. Make sure to do the hike early (before 8-9AM) especially on weekends to beat crowds and get photos you want.

High return on investment in this short hike to a beautiful lake. Right now there’s a lot of packed snow and some ice on the second half of the trail. Micro spikes were helpful.

Really great trail! Pick a day where it’s sunny and clear out so you can really enjoy the views from
the bluffs. Take your time and explore the bunkers along the way. We brought our dog and he loved the trail—he’s older and the soft dirt/sand were good on his paws.

This is the second time I have been on the trail. Two days ago the weather was perfect but yesterday it warmed up and the snow melted and turned to ice. The entire trail was icy and dangerous. We made it there and back and still had fun but just a warning to be careful after warm days!

Still beautiful and would do again!

I loved everything about this trail. It's right behind Emerald Bay and you can view the Vikingsholm at the bottom. The drive alone was worth it. The trail was easily accessible even with the snow. It lead to Eagle Lake which was entirely frozen over. The trip took about an 1.5 hrs, and we took our time and made a few stops! Really enjoyed this trail and would love to do it again.

Great winter hike! Make sure to get a discover pass.

beautiful views on a clear day! Easy to get to from Seattle

Probably a great place to visit during the summer. During the winter you definitely need things to accommodate deep snow and awkward walking angles. Definitely go on a clear day to get the best views. It cleared up just enough to get a good view.

Loved this trail! My 1st trail in Washington and the view at the end of the hike was awesome! Def worth visiting.
