The short hike is suited for just about all ages and abilities. Very crowded (parking lot full) at sunrise but less crowded by mid-morning. I recommend going later in the morning because you can still get some great photos of the canyon through the arch without the crowds!

We arrived just after sunrise yesterday and had the Butte all to ourselves. From atop Aztec Butte you’ll have super views of the surroundings to include canyons in the distance. We saw a herd of mule deer wander by the base of the butte as we sat on top. This is not a hard hike, but if you have issues with your knees or ankles you should not do this as there are many sections at pretty steep “all fours climbing” going up the butte and some “scoot on you butt” sections coming down. Don’t forget to stop by the granary!

As mentioned before, there is no sign from main road telling you the side road leads to the White Rim trail, only a sign stating picnic area. This road is on the left before you get to Grand View. While the walk is easy, it was SO worth it with good canyon views on the tiny “peninsula in the sky” it ends on. My wife and I really enjoyed it. We saw maybe 5-6 people on that trail yesterday.

easy trail, but the views were amazing, get a nice 360 view from the top of the rock at the end

super easy trail but worth doing to see the arch, nice view aswell with the mountains far in the background

One of my favorite hikes, it really is an incredible view!! Trail is not closed, just the alcove is closed off currently (Sept 2018)

Awesome for sunrise pics! It does get quite crowded with photographers so make sure you get there early to get a good spot viewing the arch and canyon below.

Fun hike but it sure does get more difficult at the end as you scramble up the rocks of the butte. But definitely worth the gorgeous view!

Easy trail and as mentioned, a good “warm up” hike. Once you reach the overlook, look to your left and follow the cairns to another viewing spot.

Short sweet and fun scrambling to the top. Good views and easy to follow trail. Cairns everywhere

I just didn’t see the appeal for the views offered. It was mediocre at best.

Easy and short hike to an arch. Not overly crowded.

Beautiful views throughout the entire hike. Very easy trail!

Great moderate trail. The cairns were in good shape and the markings easy to follow. Beautiful views.

Moderately easy (some moderately steep slick rock inclines) - but doable for family and kids. Pretty and fun little spot. Great views from top of the whale.

be polite. as a local - I send folks here, looking for a short hike to an amazing arch with a view - ALL the time. Not so they can watch 24 out of towner photographer wannabes clog the arch with their tripods and get pissy with people who would like to get a shot, as well. Get out of the way. take your shot. share this Earth; even though you think it revolves around you. there are far too many entitled people at this trail, lately.

This place was amazing. It was really cool to see the grainery and the freestanding structure at the top of the butte. The highlight for me was the sandstone dwellings and sandstone arches on the side of the butte.

Great overlook that you’ll probably have all to yourself

Didn’t make the sunrise but the sunset is still pretty spectacular. Also with a full moon it’s amazing. There were not many people around at all.

It was a easy fan trail, and incredible view all around.

Epic views. I went end of Aug, in the afternoon, and was the only one on the trail. Easy and well-marked.

A word of caution to Canyonlands “newbs” such as myself- the trailhead is not marked from the road as Gooseberry or White Rim Trail. Look for the sign saying “Picnic/Hiking Trail” after Buck Canyon and before the Orange Cliffs Overlook (I overshot the turnout).

the two miles to the end are longer than it'd seem. took about 2 hours, but beautiful trail. the beginning has the best views

Set Google maps to "false kiva." Could not find this trail. No cairns, no logs, nothing.

Lot's of lizards on the way :-)

A little scrambling at the top

The hike itself was unremarkable – basically, 1.8 miles each way with no shade and not much to see – and there are better overlooks along the main road. Views were disappointingly hazy in August 2018 from all the fires. Didn’t feel quite worth it.

The hike up to the Butte was fun for us but wouldn’t be wise for folks with knee/ankle issues. Views were disappointingly hazy in August 2018 from all the fires.

The best views in Island in the Sky, along with the White Rim overlook, and a very easy trail. Would definitely recommend.

Good views of the Needles formations. Trail is completely exposed and at times hard to follow.
