Snowshoes to the Hut , then did a day hike to kinsman shelter. Everything was awesome, trail was broken in and the hut master was great!

Yes the hut is open despite the shutdown!! Went on a foggy day and couldn’t see the view much, but still a great hike and the hut is so cool! Definitely need micro spikes, but didn’t need snowshoes as the trial is very packed down. Saw a few other friendly folks too! First mile is steep, then evens out nicely. Will have to go back to see that view on the lake!

Anyone know if the hut is open right now due to the govt shutdown? Thanks in advance.

thankful for the hut on windy winter days!

Nicely marked trails. Hiked on Christmas Day. It was cold with some some wet and icy spots but studs made it easy. We look forward to returning.

Excellent hike with great reward for the moderate effort.

This is one of my favorite hikes in Maine. Very few people hit it during the colder months. Today it was me, my buddy and someone else two hours a head of us. The views are stunning and the hike is challenging but doable for all skill levels.

Wanted to check out the rail trail so parked in the usual spot and rain thru the soggy NTF to get to the Bay Colony Rail Trail. Took a right and headed down to the TOR Charles River Peninsula and took a walk out there as it was nice and sunny. Came back then went to the end of the line at the train trestle. Dover doesn't want a rail trail in their town so that's that. Came back same way but cut into the NTF at the boyscout camp. This is a great town forest, check it out.

Went with a group of 11 people. It wasn't an easy hike for some of us, but we all made it to the top regardless. Very steep in the beginning, but flat at the lake. Beautiful trails, especially with the foliage. The cabin at the top really made for an awesome experience. Bring cash so you can enjoy a hot coco or tea! Not to mention the fresh baked cookies!! Using a pole or stick is highly recommended, especially on the way down. It rained, hailed, and snowed on us, but it was still a great time.

Just finished before lunch beautiful lake , trail was slippery definitely use your poles makes it easier especially on the way down

Climbed this last Fri. The climb up was moderate to hard for about a mile. I'm not in the best shape at 63, but felt o.k. at the top. Full sunshine but probably a bit below freezing when we arrived at the partially frozen lake. The views were stunning, as there was 4-5 inches of snow on the ground. Mt Lafayette covered in snow. All I could say was praise God for His creation. The hut was really nice. Coming down was tricky, some snow and ice on trail. Poles a must.

Great day, slow hike but totally enjoyed it. Only 2nd hike in 30 years!

Well maintained and a fun moderate trail to do!

Very rocky with heavy roots in some areas. Found it to be a moderate to easy hike with several wet areas to navigate. Lovely views and a nice rest area at the shelter with a campfire pit! Great experience overall.

9/10. Excellent views. At some points very rocky and hard to keep your eyes off the ground. I lost the trail a few times over the costal rock scrambling portion but follow the rock stacks. At this time there is a 1.2 mile detour/addition due to some flooding

We did the walk with our pup. Not sure that it should be rated ‘easy’. There are a lot of roots and rocks in the trail, making it a bit tricky. At the outlet from the pond, we had to go somewhat off trail to find a suitable path for our dog.

A great hike (walk ) around the lake
leanto
is a great place to stop and have lunch and enjoy the scenery....peace and quiet.
Thank you

The high elevation is moderate to climb for sure but the lake at the center of the mountain is breathtaking and the loop around the lake is a nice break with level ground walking across wooden boards. At a fork parkway around the loop we took a right instead of a left around the lake, do not do that! It turns into a hard hike with high elevations. We turned around when the air got thin. Just keep left following the signs to the hut. Our little dog was with us and he loved every minute of this hike just as much as my boyfriend and I did.

Some heavy breathing going up rocks but moderately easy and well maintained, we even ended up coming down an off path water runoff and landed back on one of the cannon trails

The reviews about this trail are pretty fair. Sharing my different experience: The weather forecast for our hike showed rain. It started raining as soon as we got to the lake, so we spent lunchtime in the hut. The lake was completely covered in clouds about half an hour later. We were happy to have seen the lake before the clouds rolled in, because we couldn’t see anything by the time we left!

Really this would probably be 3 1/2 stars for me. This hike was pretty without much elevation but like another reviewer noted it is rocky! Once you cross over the creek that whole section of the trail is super rocky. I couldn't really enjoy my surroundings, because if you looked up while walking you'd twist an ankle. Our golden retriever had a rougher time then usual too with paw placement. A 2 mile hike to the pond should have taken our family of 4 around 40 minutes or less - we hike a lot. It took us over an hour to get to pond since it was slow going with the rocky path.

I’d rate it a harder moderate due to the rocky nature going up in the second half, but it’s so worth it making it to the top. Lake is serene and beautiful, views are fantastic and the hut is a great place to stop for a rest and snack.

Great trail well traveled and fun to hike , the hut at the top on the lake is perfect for having lunch before continuing on. The ducks are so friendly on the lake and the views are so gorgeous especially in fall !

Misty, foggy day, but beautiful stream-side hike. Foliage was great.

Nice secluded loop trail. Was a crowded fall weekend, parked on side of rt 16 because campground was closed. Quick walk through campground to trailhead(right next to camp site #7). Blazes are yellow. Gets pretty steep after about 3/4 mile(probably toughest part of hike). Levels out and actually goes downhill a bit for awhile then back up pretty steady. Opens up on a couple ledges with nice northern views. Whole loop took me about 2.5 hours with not much of a break anywhere but didn’t race through it either.

We did this trail today and lost a navy blue sweatshirt that says SJP soccer. If you find it please email me. Thanks! LUSKCT@gmail.com

Thank you!

Hiked this trail counter clockwise as recommended which was definitely the best way to go. A gradual uphill climb to the summit followed by a shorter (but steep) downhill return. The views at the top weren't 360 but we're absolutely gorgeous, especially as the leaves are starting to change! Although the uphill climb was tough and got my heart pumping, we saw people of all ages on the trail.

Great easy hike that my wife and I enjoyed with a great view at the Pinnacle of many area peaks. Very well marked and maintained, will do it again sometime soon...

We're super slow hikers and this trail took us 3 hours from our camp at Lafayette Place. It's an incline for the first hour and a half and levels out around the lake. Big steps, maybe a scramble or two, but totally worth it. The view of the mountains from the lake was absolutely beautiful. Very chilly late September, so remember a jacket! :)

I'd rate it MODERATE HARD getting lake. EASY around lake and MODERATE going back.
