Beautiful hike and with the snow gives a Narnia vibe in the desert.

Recently I had the great fortune of hiking to Lake of the Woods with two of our sons. We took a chance, late in the hiking season, to travel a small portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. This wonderful little trail offered a variety of terrain, lakes and foliage. While challenging, in my current athletic ability, this well-traveled trail gives the day hiker and backpacker stunning views and beautiful scenery.

We had the lake to ourselves for two days. Clear sky and beautiful weather with temps in the sixties daytime and low thirties at night, made for a fantastic trip!

We will be back to this little gem again!

Beautiful trail - tried to do after a big snow storm and lost the last mile of trail. Still had great views and would recommend.

This a great day-hike. The trail itself is not hard; just make sure you are wearing nice hiking shoes because of the loose rocks. This is a great time of the year to do it because of the changing colors of the trees. Lyons Lake is a must!

Beautiful fall hike, lots of golden leaves, few hikers. Definitely one to do again!

Although not as immediately grand as Lake Aloha or Clyde Lake, Lake of the Woods is really just as beautiful and has the added bonus of feeling even more secluded and peaceful. Plus you can always add Lake Aloha to this hike as it isn't much further.

Wow! Fabulous trail ride. A lot of DG and does technical with the large boulders. We are not able to get to Rock Lake. Boulders made it impossible to pass safely with our horses.
My horse did fine without shoes.
Narrow at points with steep drop offs lasting short distances. First time taking my young mare on a more technical ride, she did fine. There is quite a bit of elevation hike, but we stopped and tested as needed. Quite a few hikers, not bad. Parking adequate.

This is the trail for everyone. If you have visitors from other places this is perfect. Short walk to the falls, short loop trail to Eagle lake, then longer hikes to Velma lake and others. Nice shaded hike and would be perfect for summer. There was a family out today and they had a 2 year old walking, a little one in a pack and were past Eagle lake. Not a lot of altitude for people from sea level as well. Fantastic scenery from every angle. The trail gets five stars, the management get a thumbs down (no permits available) maybe they just are not important. Costs 5$ to park.

A tough but beautiful hike. Many of trees and ferns were in full fall splendor and the views of Lake Tahoe were spectacular. The cool fall temperatures made for perfect hiking weather as the climb is steep and at times a bit grueling. The wind came up just as I reached the lake, which is peaceful and also showing hints of fall. A few pointers - when leaving the lake, keep to the left (or better yet track your journey with the app), getting off course is easy. Also, there are mountain bikes on the trail, so be alert.

Lovely trail on Sunday Sept 30. Perfect fall temps. Aspen and low growth are turning yellow. Me and my friend ran up to Round lake then back down to turn off to Dardanelles. The grade is a nice easy climb totally runnable up and down. A little rocky in some places but can really cruise. Took us about 3 hours to do a little over 12 miles and 1900 feet of climbing. Both lakes are gems. Just beautiful.

lets just start out with the hike up is not the best, nice steady incline that you will feel later, but worth it. the hike was amazing, with the fall colors it was so beautiful. nice sandy trail easy on my pups paws. all around a great hike and can't wait to do it again. Marlette lake was beautiful and peaceful.
when you take the left in the fork in the road and end up entering by the dam. make sure on the way back to go to your left to take the same trail back.

The trail is fun and well-marked. The hike to Sylvia is easy and to Lyons gets very steep but lasts only .4 miles. Sylvia Lake was a bit low but had clean filterable water. I climbed up Pyramid Peak which was great. There's an unmarked trail at about 85 degrees bearing from Sylvia Lake up to the peak.

Lyons Lake is beautiful and had more water than Sylvia. I recommend visiting both lakes and climbing Mt. Agassiz or Pyramid Peak for the great views.

Love the lake! Didn't enjoy the climb up to the top and then all the way back down. Definitely a much more intense hike than most people are used to with a pack! Not many options for camping but we did find a nice spot on the other side of the lake, we required another mile of hiking.

Beautiful hike. We hiked in to Middle Velma and spent the night, then hiked back out the next day. We drove up from the valley and started this cold turkey with no elevation acclimation so it sucked the oxygen out of us very quickly, especially since we all had on 40 lb backpacks. The climb up is like going on a stairclimber machine for 4 straight hours. For you novices, like me, the trail is rough, with rocks and granite steps and fallen logs and debris the whole way. Its not a nicely groomed trail that is easy to walk on. You better have sturdy shoes/boots to prevent ankle sprains. And I'm in pretty good shape as I exercise regularly. I was exhausted when we got to camp. But the lake was gorgeous. COLD water though. No bugs, just some annoying chipmunks that got into my snack stash. Next time I'll bring a pellet gun to deal with them... And we never saw any signs of bear, unlike some of the other reviewers stated.

There was a light shower for an hour early this morning, but it cleared up! Beautiful sunny day after that. Very nice trail with little incline. Come early because the parking lot is always full.

Loved this trail and would be an excellent place to backpack and set up camp! Beautiful views... experienced all this area has to offer weather wise. It rained, snowed, hailed and then it was like it never happened! Incline is pretty hefty first part of the trail. Coming down got to experience the sound of Bear. Never saw it though. Started at sunrise at finished at noon which was perfect because it was very busy then.

This is an awesome hike. Pretty easy to moderate up to Silvia Lake, slightly harder to get up to Lyons Lake. I took the extra trip to the top of Pyramid peak and will remember that view for the rest of my life.

Great trail, little bit of a challenge since it's a near constant uphill, but it was fun. The views of Slide Mountain are really great, the hiker in front of me saw several bears; a Mom and her Cubs. I later found a still drenched chewed up baseball cap on the trail were the bears were seen at, so definitely keep alert. Not a beginners hike, but if you're physically active you'll be fine.

Moderate overall but it’s hard to judge when you go backpacking for the first time. Wonderful trail. Plenty of kids are able to do it with their families.

Beautiful trail. The way to the lake is mostly uphill. Wasn’t too crowded. Few mountain bikers and everyone was super polite. Got slightly lost. About 2 miles in there’s a fork in the trail so make sure you go left. Marlette Lake is beautiful and peaceful. it was so empty it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.

Loved this hike- somewhat rocky but a nice challenge! Our 2 Golden’s loves the swim in the lake!

Good trail - we hiked this 8/24/18 so it was dry and dusty. Would love to see it in early July. Even so the big timber on the climb up and the vista view was beautiful. This is a mountain bike friendly trail. And the first 1.5 miles of the trail is a 4x4 road. Also the map says 11+ miles round trip but the USFS sign said 6.7 miles to the top.

Beautiful hike. Be careful of the loose rocks. I rolled my ankle several times and I hike and jog regularly. Consider myself very athletic. Otherwise it’s a nice workout. It’s a little more than 7 miles. I started the hike at 7am and was about 60 degrees. Shorts and t-shirt.
Will definitely be back.

The first 4.5 mile was between easy and normal. However, the last 0.5 mile was hard. It took us 30-45 min to compete last 0.5 mile. The Lions Lakes is a reward ! we swam and took a nap before return. 6 hour to compete + 1.5 for photo, swimming and napping.

I did this as my first day and night in Desolation Wilderness. Short hike so I poked around for awhile after setting camp at Tamarack. Nice spot with crazy trees that I photographed for an hour before hanging out by the Lake processing water and meditating (aka napping).

We were aiming for Aloha but decided to head down to Lake Of The Woods en route. So glad we did! Despite all the smoke from the CA fires, it was a beautiful lake that we pretty much had to ourselves :) I can’t wait to do it again on a clear day! Rocky trail would benefit from hiking poles....

Beautiful, but there's a 600+ lb California Brown bear that's way to comfortable with people and knows how to bring down a properly hung bear bag.

The hike is mis-rated as "hard". It's an easy hike for experienced hikers/backpackers. For the less experienced day hike crowd it's a moderate hike. I absolutely loved the scenery. The show stopper though is when you reach the top of the trail there's a sharp turn that unveils the lake. Simply breathtaking. Stopped me in my tracks.

With that said, if you're not partial to rocky trails and lots of loose rock and gravel, this is not the trail for you.

Great not only dogs allowed but Lama’s

If you stay on the main trail this is not HARD. Trail is smooth with cool rock formations. I took the BP side trail up to upper price lake.
Don't take this route unless you're advanced. The trail faded in and out, unless you got your leg's, head, topographic mapping @ peak you can get more than hurt. Lots of bear sign, one section just after multiple bear sign dangerous fall left and right. Main trail is the safest bet.
