DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS FULL LOOP IN SPRING NO BRIDGE AT SACRAMENTO RIVER INLET. So this is a pretty flat 7 mile hike around a beautiful lake with some nice views of Mt Shasta. We started from Siskiyou Lake campgrounds full of vim and vigor enjoying the beautiful scenery. Then we came to the Sacramento River inlet where we had a WTF moment. The trail clearly crossed this river at the point we were at but there was NO BRIDGE. The water was rushing by and we could see the trail under it. We had 1 mile to go back to our starting point and were forced to cross. Close to the other side the water got about 3 feet deep and was so swift it was sweeping our feet away. One of our party fell and got soaked but made it across safely.

Nice hike, well groomed, and quiet except for the beautiful sounds of the creek. We enjoyed the interpretive history lessons and the mining examples.

Fun trail that passes by beaches, bridges, rivers, resorts, and a golf course. The bridge at Sacramento River is closed but it’s not impossible to cross if you don’t mind balancing on a tree log.

Just got back from hiking to the top of Black Butte on April 4, 2021 (Easter) There were no cars at the trailhead so I knew I'd most likely be the only one hiking that day. The entire hike was about 5 miles (2.5 there, 2.5 back) and the trail was snow-covered most of the way up (on the east and north side). About a mile in, I realized that I was not dressed appropriately to hike as the snow was deeper than I thought. It had completely covered the trail so at times my foot would sink about 3 feet to the boulders below. However, I had already gotten that that far and didn't want to go back. After winding the trail to the west side, facing Hwy 5, the snow started to melt and the sunny trail was exposed for a while. More snow after that until about the edge of the treeline then just stayed the course to the top. Note: it was a little more dangerous near the top as it's mainly large, volcanic rock that tends to get loose and feels like your about to be part of a massive rockslide. Upon reaching the summit, the wind picked up but the air was crisp and the views were phenomenal. There are remains of an old fire-watching station from the 1930's (just the outline of the supporting wall) at the top that will definitely excite your imagination. I decided to climb down the west side through some massive boulders until I was back on the trail. Going down was much easier plus, having just come up the same way, I knew where the hazards were and how long it should take. Overall, it was definitely challenging for me (49 yrs old) but still a fun hike. I would not recommend bringing children or a dog because the upper portion of the trail is pretty rocky and unstable on the edges of a significant drop-off. But if you do go, bring a little extra water, some energy bars and most importantly, bring a camera. Second best view in town! (aside from Mt. Shasta itself)

Really nice view of Mount Shasta, trail has shade most of the time. Just the Sacramento River water level gets high in spring and the bridge may get removed for safety purpose and you will not be able to cross the river. Do check beforehand if the bridge is there or taken down

To get to middle Falls from the parking lot...stay off the snow and ice covered walking road that is a nowhere to walk. instead, Go straight, until it deals ends at the ceeek, and stick to the trail along the edge of the river by the campground. when u get to the campground and the river, then go left. nice trail to the top.
