Amazingly magical place, especially on a nice day after a rainy season. It was just the perfect amount of challenging, and the scenery didn't let you get bored even for a minute. Go early in the morning if you prefer a more secluded hike; after 12pm this trail gets pretty busy (although, not overwhelmingly). Hubby and I actually decided to hike from the start of the Cataract Trail near the lake all the way to the beginning of Rock Springs Trailhead, and we found it to feel more complete. I'd suggest parking at the parking lot near the entrance to Rock Springs Trailhead and then walking all the way until the entrance to Cataract Trailhead. Have fun exploring!

Beautiful this time of year! Great hike and workout.

Nice and easy stroll uphill

Love it!! Best to come after the rain !!

This was a beautiful get away but be prepared to work for it because there are a ton of stairs but mini waterfalls at every corner it was so peaceful me and my friends got there super early in fact first ones in the parking area by the time we left it was flooded with cars

This is one of my favorite trails in the Bay Area. Starting just past the dam at alpine lake, the trail takes you along one of the streams that feed the lake. You gain 1000+ elevation, but the beauty of the cascading water next to you the whole way takes your mind off the work of climbing the stairs and inclines. The trail has many trees to provide shade, and the area has a lot of ferns, moss, and other vibrant foliage to please the eye. To extend the hike, I recommend heading west at laurel dell fire road, cross ridgecrest boulevard, take coastal trail to Matt Davis, then up to pantoll. Take old mine trail to rock spring and head back down cataract trail.

Nice trail. Steep in some spots. can be slick after it rains. Nice views of the valley and out to the ocean.

Nothing to write home about.

Wonderful trail! Parking is very limited so get there early. Lots of elevation gain but trail is well marked & maintained so take your time and enjoy the surroundings. Absolutely stunning.

Beautiful but crowded on weekends the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Go on a weekday if you can for peace and serenity. Mossy and green year round. Mostly shaded With lots of ups and downs.

Gorgeous view of the waterfall, and it’s always fun to hike alongside waterways in Northern California! Tons and tons of stairs, so be prepared to get a workout. We continued on past the falls for about 2 miles, with even more stairs and turned back after.

Lots of waterfalls and great variety of scenery. There were a lot of stairs so something to be aware of, but we loved it and thought it was a great well rounded hike. We ended up stopping a couple miles in to eat lunch, and it was very peaceful.

A gorgeous hike with wildflowers, and beautiful waterfalls. Not too long, not too short. Almost lost my backpack and got myself stuck while attempting to climb a fallen Redwood...be careful when hiking alone, just saying.

I did this hike with a group of friends of varying backpacking experience back in 2011 when we were all juniors in high school. This may have been at the peak of its popularity before the fires, and as luck would have it, the springs were VERY crowded, and they are all very small and intimate. It was a really great bonding experience, and for the less outdoorsy friends, it really opened their eyes to the magic of getting somewhere worthwhile on your own two feet. Unexpectedly gnarly up and down the entire way; my ankles were done by the time we got to camp! You can hike out in two days if you need by sleeping at a camp that is about halfway. Definitely a formative experience for me as an outdoors lover. However, I’ll admit looking back that this is one of the less impressive and beautiful hikes in the area of Big Sur. While this trail is being fixed up, I encourage you to explore more of the Ventana and Silver Peak Wildernesses! Who knows, maybe more natural hot water is hiding out there... Remember to practice LEAVE NO TRACE principles! Hike prepared!

Great hike when you want something short and simple but with stellar views. I wasn’t aware that I would get to see elephant seals so that was a nice surprise!

Very scenic, views ranging from rain forest, to Northern forests. Also pretty easy, great to do it early in the morning. We saw deer as we got there early.

Absolutely amazing! Stunning scenery and intimate experience of the forest. Best time is February. Nice weather, no crowds.

Gorgeous scenery and many waterfalls throughout the hike.
We did a total of about 8.4 miles, since we continued onto the next trail for the view.
Even though it's fairly short, it was pretty exhausting since there's quite a bit of stairs, so bring lots of water. I'm out of shape, so it was a bit rough, but it is manageable.

Has anyone done this hike while CLOSED?

Beautiful view. As of 1.28.18 the waterfall was blocked off for maintenance.

This trail was nice to hike in. I hiked 4 miles in.
It was challenging going back up. (Which was what I was looking for) Don’t recommend if you’re a first time hiker, it could be a little difficult for you!

A gorgeous waterfalls, cataract Trail is one of my favorite trail.I walked 10.7miles, feels so awesome and relaxing.

It’s really nice hike with all combine. Bear valley trail is almost flat with no elevation gain along with stream and forest. Arch rock is already collapsed, so avoid it. Sky trail has smoothly elevation gain with good view of pacific.

thanks Liz H. Appreciate the info. Any plans to repair? I am already planning a visit back to the area. Would love to know if it will be an option?

Awesome hike ... marsh land, beach trek, hills with views of the ocean and forest. Back side of trail culminates with a half mile walk along the road/parking lot.

Stayed at Coastal Camp for the first night then went on to Wildcat Camp for night 2! Also along Coast Trail! Awesome 3 days .

on Damnation Creek Trail

Awesome trail. Time yourself and know your limits, coming out can be tough. Amazing seeing old growth to the beach. Can’t beat.

Beautiful green trail with lots of shade. It's fairly flat and the elevation gain isn't very noticeable. There are many side trails and options for loops, etc. Last trip was a 17 mile hike out to the coastal trail and up to sculpture beach and back. I will be back for many more hikes to come!

Great Hike. I recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds and to access parking. Parking is limited. about 8 spots and a portable Toilet near the entrance. Lots of shade and very green. The trail is steep, but there are so many views of waterfalls and babbling streams, its a great trail for photographers and those that just want to take their time and enjoy nature.
