We did the hike from the lower trailhead. We lucked out with the weather - November 12th and sunny, temps in the mid 40s, but this hike is such a workout that we shed our coats pretty quickly. No snow anywhere on the trail, a few parts were slightly muddy. The first part through the forest is very pleasant, but fairly steep already. After the merge with the upper trail, it becomes very steep, and very rocky. Our lab is pretty fit and used to hiking, but she was not happy crossing one section which is all big rocks (an old rock slide?). Other than that, the trail is wonderfully maintained - fresh log railings and LOTS of rock steps. Beware, what was supposed to be a 5.3 mile hike was really more like 8.9 miles according to our smart watches - and sure felt like it, too! The views from the top are amazing and get progressively better the higher you go, so it's definitely worth it, but next time we may consider leaving the doggo behind.

Lots of snow once you leave the forest. Ended up putting on snow shoes. Turned around before descending into the meadow. To much snow, breaking trail most of the way and ran out of day light. Road is rough coming in so plan on an extra 1/2 hr just to dodge pot holes.

beautiful hike! Gotta love up hill!

Highly-recommend trail!!! There are two trails separated when walking about 40 mins. The trail starts getting harder once u finish bridal veil and set foot to Lake Serene, because there are so many rocky switchbacks and the accumulated ice makes them much harder. Watch your steps, cuz the rocks covered with ice are so slippery, and my friend even slipped three times

This was my second time hiking Mount Ellinor. It was a beautiful hike not as difficult as the last time I hiked it .We had a great day and beautiful views Definitely recommend this hike ..

This was overall a moderate-ish hard hike. Like the rest of the reviewers, recommend doing the bridal veil falls first. There’s a small loop near that takes you closer to the falls and then back. The trail starts getting harder once you finish bridal veil and set foot to lake serene. With 23 switchbacks in 2 miles, this is a beast of a hike. The only thing that makes switchbacks harder is rocky switchbacks. But the trail has so many treats with little falls all over, that distracts you from your screaming knees. Quite a few creek crossings as well. Lake Serene is absolutely mind blowing. Definitely hike up to the lunch rock once you reach the lake, it’s a better view of Mt Index and Serene. The hike back down was much more challenging, this time of the year. With the rocks just having a thin layer of ice, it can get really slippery. Took me a little under 6hrs. Started at 11:15am, got to bridal veil falls by 12:15 and made it to lake Serene by 2:30. Spent about 25 mins at the lake and was back to my car by 5:00pm. There wasn’t any snow.

Hiked Saturday (11/10). Lot was about 75% full when we got there around 9:30. We did this combined with the falls. Seemed like most people just did the falls. Please be aware that the bit where it opens up from the tree line, close to the lake, is very slick and you’ll see frost around. I busted my knee, several others slipped/fell. For me, this was definitely a hard hike, especially with the slick rocks, so be sure to plan accordingly and consider the time of year. We took about 50 minutes to get to the falls, about 2hr 15min to get to the lake, and 2 hours out. It took us longer than expected, at our usual pace I predicted 4-4.5 max.

very cool and well worth the hike. this was our first actual hike so it's hard to measure it against anything. pretty steep incline but we'll marked trails and plenty of stuff to see. people along the way were very friendly. had an unbelievable time.....yes well worth it. ad thank you to those of you who donate your time to keep those trails looking the way they do.

The lower trail was really scenic with a nice forest view, I would only do this part once.

The upper trail was AMAZING and very tough during the last stretch of it.. It was pretty hard to find the trail due to the big rocks and the hard incline up. The whole trail had great lookouts. though. The top was really cold, but that was expected. We made the sunset in time.

Definitely one of my favorite hikes ever and I would do the upper trail over and over again

We forgot that daylights savings meant an hour less of sunlight, so we didn’t quite make it all the way to the top, will be doing again :)

I have hiked this trail twice before but hiked it again today on November 3rd. I went 3.5 miles and then turned back, but could have gone further given the snow. It was snowing but very lightly. People I passed said you could go further than I went—one said just one grade away from the pass. Don’t let the snow stop you on this one even if you can’t do the full loop. You can still do quite a bit and it’s still beautiful!

Note: I always go counter-clockwise.

Also, there were less than 10 groups hiking today.

I am a beginner and it was my second hike. I went there on Saturday around 12pm and returned at 7:15pm. It was hard for me but I enjoyed a lot. I would suggest not to add 0.7 mile for Ann lake because there is nothing to see, rather you will get nice view form the top.

If you are beginner then it’s really hard for you, as per my experience.

This trail is incredibly beautiful, even when it’s foggy. We didn’t have much visibility due to the weather, but it was so gorgeous with the fog and fall colors. Go before the road closes for winter, but beware of ice. We got to see the larches, and the whole trail was lovely.

Absolutely beautiful! We hiked this trail on October 16, 2018. The larch trees along with the fall colors had us using the words beautiful, amazing, breathtaking several times. We went clockwise (steeper on the way up) this made for a much easier time on the knees for the trip down. We plan to make another trip next spring!

this was probably one of the hardest hikes i’ve done. it starts out flat for about a mile and then it’s just straight up the entire way. when you think you’re almost there you have about another mile to go. the basin was beautiful and gorgeous and while we were up there a person fell off the ledges of the hike and had to be airlifted out of there so i really suggest being careful when you’re up there! the hike kicked my butt but it was beautiful!

I havent hiked in 25 yrs.this was my 2nd hike in a few months an it kicked my butt.i do have some lung disease.but it was so beautiful an the scenery was breathtaking..

We randomly woke up Friday (10/26) morn and decided to head up! It was really warm here in Arlington! Got to the trailhead at 9am and reached the peak at 11! As we slowly (so many terrible potholes)descended up the road it started to get very windy and the fog was so irie! The different landscapes were so beautiful and the trail very wet, we pretty much walked in water the whole time but no big deal! The saddest part was this was my first time and the fog never cleared and covered the whole view :( We were alone all morning and didn't see another group till we were half way down, then we passed 4 more groups all clumped up! Overall it was a perfectly irie October day, but I will be going back on a clear day to see the view I missed!

We parked at the upper parking lot and I don't regret it.

There was a heat wave going through at the time so it was extremely hot. We did this with our Golden, and the air quality was probably pretty poor because there was a fire in the Olympic Park.

But was still an amazing hike. I would highly suggest it, and, if possible go on a clear day!

it was breathtaking

Hiked on 10/21 and it was a perfect day to do so. The first few miles were very flat so a nice warm up to where the elevation starts. We also went to rampart lakes and some of the little lakes were a little frozen probably from not getting much sun. It was super cold when we started at around 8ish but warmed up as soon as we started to walk. I saw about 6 dogs and only one was on a leash. I understand that your dog might be well behaved but some people get really nervous around them specially if they are not in a leash. Im one of them. I saw dog poop bags too which was super disappointing I wish people would just carry their dog poop and not leave it for people to see. There were not many people so it was nice. I didn’t really think it was a hard hike more Like a moderate hike.

Did this hike today, Sunday 10/21. The trail is in great shape and I could not experience and iced rocks as reported before. The NF-4200 definitely has quite a few and big potholes. I drove over carefully but you better plan 30-45min for the last few miles on the dirt road to the trailhead.

Temperatures were awesome. Did it all around in a t-shirt and it was mostly on the warmer side.

I recorded 4.75km one way from the trailhead to the fire lookout at the top.

Don't forget your Northwest Forest Pass;)

Says it is hard. Feels more moderate. We did a round trip in 4.5 hours with an 8 year old including time chilling at the lake. It's always beautiful. I also didnt see any change to the scenery from the past summer's logging that shut the trail down.

Amazing hike! Feeling my muscle pain now) I read and expected rocks on top, but didn’t know that it’s almost rock climbing. There wasn’t snow.

Beautiful hike, to say the least! Breathtaking almost the whole way, In one way or another.Kicked my butt though.

Gorgeous fall hike with Larches just past their prime. The beauty of the N. Cascades was marred only by the numbers of fellow day hikers.

Went up to the Rampart lakes yesterday and there was no ice or snow. It was perfect!

I did small potion only 13 mile of the trail , it was great weather today 10/21/18 and fantastic view

Beautiful.
