HikingGreat!

Loved the cave. This hike is around 5.2 round trip from the parking lot up to the cave and the elevation was over 900. The trailhead sign indicates 5.5. No shade so go early.

Great hike with a variety of terrain and nice views. We saw hummingbirds, quail and tiny lizards.

Did the incline first and would recommend that. It was a nice hike with nice views! A lot of sand to walk through at the end and then a long stretch of road/pavement.

Amazing colors and views of the valley. You can continue further past this trail if you want to lengthen it. But it contains enough elevation changes to qualify as moderate.

HikingGreat!

This was such a fun trail, my 6 year old hiked the whole way there and back. And my 2 year old did parts of it. We spent quite some time inside the cave eating lunch, exploring the surroundings, it was a lot of fun. We saw a few lizards along the way which my boys loved, my oldest really loved the lava rocks as well. A great family hike! Took us about 70 minutes to the cave and 70 minutes back to the parking lot, this is with our 6 year old hiking and occasionally stopping to look at things along the way. The weather was perfect (60-70 degrees). Not much shade so in hotter months it wouldn’t be as enjoyable probably. The cave is nice and cool to rest though. The scenery along the way was beautiful!

Hiking

We only hiked to the cave. The trail to the cave has three parts: the lava flow section (easy to trip, pretty flat); the dry creek bed (some sand and shade); and the ascent to the Scout Cave (easy to reach 2 of the 3 caves). Overall, not much shade along the hike but the caves make for a good lunch / snack spot. We did this in 60-75 degree weather. Much hotter and we would not recommend it. The trailhead sign says it is a 5.5 mile round trip hike, but the hike to just the cave entrance, which most hikers were doing, is about 3.5 miles. There is a $10 fee for the hike since it is in a state park.

this was a great trail. It's really only about 3.5 round trip to the caves and back. there are 2 caves, one is easily accessible and the other is not. has great views, easy to follow trail with changing conditions (lava rocks, sand, hard rock, and a little bit of boulder for added fun. parking lot is decent sized, but no toilets. We started at 830a and only saw 1 family and a solo hiker on way out, but the trail was very busy on the way back to parking. go early and it's a nice peaceful hike

Beautiful CW trail! Sadly, the last 2 miles are on gravel & pavement, but the other 4.2 is very scenic!

This is our second time here, and so glad we made the choice to go all the way around this time. We started in the fee lot outside the state park and hiked up through the canyon first. The second half had a bit of a trek through sand, then onto the gravel road and eventually the bike path. The views were outstanding all the way around, even if it wasn’t a hiking trail for a couple of miles.

Less than a moderate level of difficulty. Is easy to mild with a short section of moderate shortly before the cave. You can hike beyond the cave for a good overlook and at least today snow capped mountains from the boulder. Good entry hike for child but maybe long for them when walking back.

Was rated as moderate but the cw climb to the top of the saddle was strenuous. Would have rated 4 stars if the last 2 miles were not on a road.

It was hard to follow and missed the part going down to the cave and ended up on top of it. Good hike, just hard to follow the trails at times
