This trail is a great option if you're looking for a quick outing with your dogs. You can definitly tell that you're in a neighborhood since the trail goes from dirt to paved and back to dirt so keep that in mind. All in all, it's a nice walk, flat and easy to navigate since it takes you in a loop. Walking at a medium pace takes you about an hour.

Great hike to burn those calories! I started on the main trail from Discovery Lake through the neighborhood above. Steep to start, but there is a paved road to make it easier. Once past the residential area, the trail gets more rough. I took a few off-the-main-trail paths that got very steep and loose towards the top. There are a few cut-through paths that are challenging and feel like you're getting lost, but you always end up at the top. Great 360 view. You can see the ocean on q clear day. Took less than 2 hours round trip at a brisk pace.

- PROS -
1. Some of the most beautiful panoramic views of surrounding San Diego.
2. Much less foot traffic than other popular nearby hikes (Mt. Woodson, Iron Mountain). I saw maybe 10 other people on a Sunday morning.
3. Great workout, with plenty of climbs. Definitely a solid Moderate.
4. Very nice ample free parking and bathrooms at the start
5. Well maintained trail, albeit small rocks here and there.

- CONS -
1. The section between Secondary Summit and Black Mountain Peak is CLOSED. I noticed this was mentioned back in Feb. 2017, and apparently it is still under restoration now in Sep. 2018. This makes it a bit of a pain to hike a loop. I went counter-clockwise, following the posted route. Once I got to Secondary Summit, it should just be ~0.4mi uphill to Black Mountain Peak...but it's closed. So I needed to backtrack to the short nighthawk trail connector, at which point it joins Miner's Ridge Loop. From there, I went up to Black Mountain Peak, and then followed Miner's Ridge Loop all the way down.
2. The entirety of Miner's Ridge Loop is a wide service road from the antennas at the top. This was fine, just be aware that it isn't quite as "natural".
3. Not much clear signage. However, I just used a GPS map on my phone whenever the trail split and didn't get lost. I had cell service and 4G during the entire hike.

We arrived at 7:30am. The fog was still low, so the temperature was perfect and scenery was still pretty. Saw lots of ducks, a heron, and an egret on the water.

Definitely needed GPS to follow this trail. Enjoyed it but would like to explore other options. Looked like there were other more interesting, demanding options than what is mapped here.

Fun trail, I did the Ridgeline trail to double peak. Will definitely be back to explore other routes. Trailer parking is limited, would not suggest a large gooseneck trailer, Trailer parking may be difficult on a popular day. Also, a busy road is nearby and would be scary if a horse got loose. I recommend not taking a green or new horse. I went during the week, in the middle of the day. Footing was decent, a few rocky areas, I was able to trot and canter a little. There are mountain bikers doing single tracks and pop up out of no where, my horse did spook a couple times but the mountain biker did stop and was very respectful of my horse. Overall nice views, nice trails will be back 鸞

Best during overcast weather. Late summer walks can get a bit dusty but scenic.

Excellent for mountain biking. It has some really good but few air drops. Good for any level

beautiful, not too challenging, and quiet. we may have to go back with bicycles too.

Very good hike with some decent views. The trail loops around a dead volcano. Saw some blue herons and white egrets in the lake, tons of dragon flies and a few finches and hummingbirds. Sun can be harsh so wear plenty of sunscreen or protective clothing. Got a good workout here.

The trail was confusing in some places and one part of the marked trail was blocked off, but an alternate trail was used. We took the right hand trail which turned out to be the return side of the marked trail. Not sure if this was the easier of the two directions, but both had good elevation changes, so either way was uphill going back to trail head. There are other parking locations which didn’t have the same elevation drop from the designated trail head on the map!!

Like the other comments showed, the views along this trail aren’t the best. You do travel through a neighborhood but it’s a quiet one. If you’re in the area and looking for a quick afternoon burn, this is a good hike. It’s pretty short but the hills are steep the entire way. In the loop shown by the map, there is some interesting single track worth investigating.

This is a great hike for any day and weather. pushing 90 outside, and with the wind, made for an excellent time out.

This was a great hike. A good workout but not too hard. It feels way out there but really just a few minutes off the freeway. Pay close attention to the trail markers to stay on the 10 mile loop. We got lost the first time we did this and ended up hiking a total of 14 miles because we had taken a wrong turn at some point.

love this hike because if you want hard take 1 way or if you want easy take another way. My husband likes to do mountain biking so he can do that while the dogs, kids & I hike the hills. Bring your hiking shoes as it does get slippery on some hills especially the Volcano. BEWARE rattlesnakes & they are huge! we saw them by the cave.

Great flat trail which brings exercise and tranquility into a nice mix. Lots of plants and water foul and a great nature center that also has a free book exchange library.

Fun, beautiful hike! We saw many coyotes and rabbits! Very scenic and lots of shade. I would definitely recommend to others who are looking for a long, somewhat challenging at times, hike!

There are a few places to park along the trail. Its great if you're looking for something flat. there's lots of shade so its great as a trail to walk/jog on a hot or humid day. very dog friendly and relatively wide paths. only downside is that it's close to highway 5 freeway and there's some noise from that as you get closer west.

Pleasant mellow walk along the lagoon. There use to be motorcycle tracks back in the day where the turn around point and visitor center are located today. Times change

Next to very busy road and very ugly industrial buildings. Must cross several intersections along route. There’s a lot better places to ride your bike in San Diego. Although I appreciate the city putting in this bike path I don’t recommend.

Beautiful, easy hike...the lake and scenery are very lovely. The trail is very close to the hwy for much of the hike which is the only drawback. We actually went last week on a record-breaking heat day and it was still really nice.

It’s a nice hike but you need to watch where you walk on part of the trail because it is rocky. I loved the bridges and the water was relaxing.

It's a nice local suburban hike with about a 1000' gain on wide, well-marked trails. It gets better once you get to the top of Stoneridge housing development - at the first water tank - and away from the houses. Nice views once you get high enough. Can be somewhat crowded on weekends, but not too bad. Cool that you can get a climb and a view like this without having to drive too far. Nice spanning coastal views on clear days and usually pleasant breezes to cool you off once you hit the top. Cool to hit Double Peak just around sunset.

Too many houses around during some of the trip.
Saw a coyote though so had a good experience. Moderate difficulty.
