Great trial. A light snow had fallen the day before, so it was a little slick on the rocks. But, overall, a beautiful trail. It starts out as an aggressive ascent, but it lessens as you go.

Started just as it began to snow, about 3 inches when we reached the lake. Well worth it!

Awesome hike with great views. There are 2 paths to get to the M- one straight up with a heart pounding 1/2 mile or 1.9 miles up easier switchbacks.

Great hike with some good views. A little muddy because of the rain but all in all, lovely

We did the marked road trail on the way up. snow cover wide trail was well trampled by other travelers but we were the only ones on the way up and back. When you arrive there's a T and you go right to the waterfall. Visited the falls, which were beautiful half-frozen, then took the other trail to the left to hit Hyalite Trail. Took a left onto a heavily traveled trail which began like a frozen stream this day. This single track trail was fantastic and took us to a signpost indicating a connector to the Grotto Falls Trailhead. This connector trail had not been traveled since the snow had fallen a few days earlier and was absolutely a fantastic five star trek. On this day, crunching snow, sunshine and amazing views. At some points you can see Grotto Falls trail below you. It comes out to the left of the trailhead and is unmarked. Fantastic simple high value hike!

This is a really nice hike to a very pretty lake. Go early.

Plenty of room for horse trailer parking at the overflow parking area. Beautiful and well marked trail. Made it up to the 3.5 mile point, past the first top. Definitely worth an extra mile to get a better vantage point! The fall colors were breathtaking and plenty of room to pass other adventurers. Highly recommend this trail!

great for small kids

Really amazing trail! I hiked it solo on 9/16/18. I was afraid of bears but did have spray. Just like everyone has posted, it is a moderately rocky trail so watch your step, almost no flat portions but no exposed slabs or anything like like, worth the hike!!!! Note, the rocks were a bit slippery because it had rained the night before. Make sure to wear hiking shoes. The trail took me under 2 hours to summit and a bit over an hour to descend. I am from CT and am used to hiking steep trails in the White Mountains but I am not used to the elevation. Bring water, a snack, and take your time.

Multi-purpose trail and lots of people out using it. If you are looking for an easy stroll and a double track for a group of people, this is a nice option.

The lake is freezing but I recommend jumping in anyway.

Busy trail. Best to head up early and on the weekday. Bring your fly rod, water and bear spray. Worth the rocky hike.

Loved this hike. I’m a beginner hiker so this was a bit difficult but it was beautiful and worth it. There are not very many flat spots so it continuously goes uphill but the lake at the top is breath taking!

Nice short hike. Picnic tables etc. at trailhead parking lot. Very pretty. Good hike for families and people who have difficulties on unimproved trails.

Great hike, my son even made it and he’s only 5. Beautiful spot.

Low traffic. Heavily shaded. Trail in good condition.

Great trail! I have four littles (ages 2-7) and it was PERFECT for them! We walked right along the creek and even found a few spots you could get done to the water. The kids had a blast walking across ‘the plank’ to get to the ‘rock island’ (water was about an inch or so deep!

Will definitely be back!

Very nice hike, not long at all. Much longer drive up there than the hike itself. Not strenuous or taxing. More like an afternoon stroll through the park. Well, not exactly but close. I kept going another 3-4 miles beyond Grotto Falls on the Hylite Creek trail. 90% of dogs weren’t on a leash but that didn’t bother me. I kinda think if they are well behaved it’s almost torture to keep them on a leash. I didn’t like the 3 motocross bikes coming up the trail but if it’s legal then they have a right to enjoy the trail too. If not legal then GTFO!

Beautiful views and forgiving trail.

Nice running trail.

We loved this trail, biked it, it was a nice challenge going up, and fun going down. The lake is beautiful.

A little rocky but is is worth the view

This is a great short trail if you only go to the M, but I do like to go a little further and hit the summit. My phone records 65 flights of stairs to the M. If you go all the way up to the ridge it is a much harder yet enjoyable, less traveled hike and my phone records that as 178 flights. This is a extremely busy trail and parking can be an issue but hey it’s a Bozeman must! Enjoy

Our main reason for hiking this trail was to find the shortest route to Mystic Lake, thinking it was only ten miles. But we somehow clocked 14 miles because we actually hiked to where the lake currently was, not the northern most point where it might reach during very high water. And the elevation change is deceptive because there is a lot of up and down - 160 flights of stairs according to my Apple Watch. Even in mid-August, the trail was very muddy in many areas and had a few slippery creek or low-point crossings. So, it was a tough hike with the mud and hills, but the lake is very pretty. Wildflowers were essentially done.

we thought it was a fine trail! muddy and icey a bit still but not so difficult that you can't look around and enjoy the fauna. no animals but tons of butterflies!

This was a nice slow hike through the woods. I got to the parking lot at around 830 am on a Friday thinking it would be crowded, but I was one of a couple of vehicles there. The trail is rocky but very doable. I had no problems with the trail or the hike. I seemed to be the only person on the trail at that time of day. it wasn't until I was getting close to the lake that younger hikers started passing me. It is a beautiful lake with wonderful views. On the return hike to the parking lot, the crowds were just heading up.

Short. Asphalt surface. Nice waterfall!
