Nice wide beginner hiking trail with a few steep area but nothing to drastic. There are benches along the way so you can take a breather if the trail gets you a bit winded. Today was a perfect day with clear blue skies but the at the Overlook the wind did have a slight bite. The snow capped mountains in the distance were amazing to view. Would like to do this trail again in the spring to see the wildflowers.

great hike. took the kids 3&5. I would say this is a moderate hike only if you are doing the final climb to see the cave entrance.

Decent hike that starts with a mild incline, then fluctuates with ups and downs. Nice mellow hike, no real view points. Good for staying close to Denver. Some of the trails are blocked off so it was easy to get turned around, navigating with AllTrails was needed to get to the right place.

Great hike! 'Moderate' rating is appropriate. Signs and trails can make it a little confusing at the beginning, so following the mesa trail signs not the ncar trail signs. It's a pretty steep hike in general. 2.4 miles OUT and 2.4 miles BACK. Last 100' was too steep for our group of 2nd graders. Beautiful views amongst the flatirons. Still worth going even though we could see the cave at the top.

This hike was amazing. The first half was very smooth and simple, then it turns pretty rocky for the last mile or so. The very last bit was absolutely the best part though. I saw other people posting that the last 100 feet or so was a climb, so I was expecting something along the lines of boulder hopping. Boy was i wrong! It was a legitimate climb! I would say it was about a 60ish degree angle, which was exactly what i was hoping for! Most of the trail is great for most dogs, and older kids too! I will 100% be going back!

Great trail! The last 100ft up to the cave is a pretty steep climb up rocks... not very kid or dog friendly, but the trail leading up to that point is great. Definitely recommend boots.

So beautiful- if you start in the second lot, the climb is steeper. Got a bit confused following the map, because the upper loop was closed in places.

This was a good hike. Pretty steep right from the get go. We took a lot of breaks. Good views along the way. Not overly crowded on the trail, but parking was pretty hard to come by on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Coming back up from the river was the hardest part for me. All in all, 4 hours well spent.

Pretty low traffic and amazing views. Didn’t see any wild life but the river was awesome. Along the river there are a few picnic tables.

This was my first hike after moving from the midwest. It was a nice trail, took the dog with us, got my heart rate going right off the bat and we took it nice and slow. Probably not the best first hike for someone who hasn't hiked much, we didn't make it all the way to the end, but we will next time!

Amazing view!

Difficult but great view at the end!

Great but strenuous hike! We took Homestead trail, which is a small offshoot to the left as you’re heading in, to Shadow Canyon. We enjoyed Homestead because it’s less trafficked and smaller than Mesa trail, which is sort of like walking on a rocky road, but you can take either to get to Shadow Canyon. Shadow Canyon gets to be quite difficult, but is well worth it when you reach the top. Excellent views into the mountains and of Boulder. It took us 3 hours to reach the summit with a few short breaks, and 2:20 to get back to the parking lot. We were worked but satisfied!

We went up Mesa trail to Shadow Canyon to South Boulder Peak trail. We somehow missed Towhee trail and couldn't find Homestead so we took Mesa. That added mileage. The trails are beautiful, especially in the fall. You climb in ernest on Shadow Canyon trail. It's definitely hard but not the hardest I've hiked! You are scrambling at some parts of the trail but mostly just large steps/lunges. Overall great hike! Parking is $5. Get there early for a spot, like 11am?

Great morning hike! Lovely views in some spots and mostly very shaded. Does get a bit rocky and steep at some points but mostly pretty accessible.

Great hike with the doggo this evening! The trail to the cave was nearly empty, with the exception of a few runners on the front end pursuing the Mesa Trail. The cave at the top was closed for bats, but beautiful views of the Boulder Valley and Flatirons throughout!

This is a very enjoyable hike. Parts of it are steeper then I expected, but I'm a flatlander so anything with an incline is steep. There is a "new" section that has been cut, off of the Walker Ranch Trail Loop parking area. Not sure how long it has been this way.

Birding was ok

Beautiful trail. In my opinion it's a moderate hike, nothing too challenging. The scenery is just magnificent, but the trail is not always marked very well. i started on a Saturday, 7 a.m. There were very few cars in the (pretty big) parking lot. After my return at 11 a.m., there were still quite a few spots available.

Loved this hike. Kid friendly three years and up. If you go early take a jacket. The way we went ended at the river. Perfect spot to cool off and dip your toes in. We will be going again.

beautiful hike!!! loved that all dogs must be on leash or risk $300 fine no exceptions. For those of us with tricky dogs this was a wonderful find!!

go counter clockwise! It still has some steep climbs but it will help you avoid climbing the steep stairs.

loved the water and lots of trees! great hike! will definitely be back

got there at 10 am on Friday plenty of space in the parking lot.

I am only giving this trail a two because I didn't finish it. The second parking lot has a river running with beautiful rocks that where we stayed the entire time. We attempted to do the trail however it was very overgrown where the brush was constantly touching you. Being scared of running into a Rattlesnake, we decided to turn back and maybe come back in Winter. There was also a Bear in area sign that kind of freaked me out. No parking fee, Bathrooms at the trail head.

Good hike...go early as it gets busy with hikers. make sure you wear your hiking boots. it's a bit rocky in places.

Fun hike! We did a hard 8 miles in the sun and shade. Dogs loved the stream!

It's a beautiful hike, but like others have said, it was definitely strenuous. The payoff when you get to the peak is definitely worth it! Don't get discouraged!

Amazing hike for such low elevation and so close to home. Went with buddy and three dogs. Enough vertical gain to get the heart rate up without being too strenuous. Beautiful views to the southwest toward Indian Peaks/Continental Divide. Hope to go back another time and add Walker Ranch. Be sure to bring $8 cash if you're going at a time when a ranger might not be there to swipe your credit card.

Fantastic for a short hike, quick elevation with a family!

Nice short and relatively easy hike! Took us 45 min to get to the cave. The views from boulders are great.

Great hike! Pretty views of the mountains and of Denver while also having the sound of the river and being able to go down to the river at Walker Ranch Trail when you get to the end of the Canyon Trail. The River is just down a small hill so it's worth the extra steps. Today it was partly cloudy which was nice b/c it didn't get too hot on the trail. The parking and trail became more crowded around 11am so getting there early is beneficial.

A great trail! Beware that they modified the Walker Loop - I ended up walking up to another trailhead and taking another trail to meet back up with the Walker loop. Follow the "New Access" signs to save yourself some.e energy!
