Great hike! Gentle rolling slopes throughout the hike. We recommend hiking clockwise, which is technically backwards, as the prettier section of the hike is closer to mile markers 1-2.5. My wife completed the hike wile carrying our 17lb infant on a front carrier. She was tired by the end of the hike, but managed well.

Very well maintained trail. Park Rangers and staff were adding new gravel throughout. Entire hike is under tree cover until the end. At 1 mile there is an overlook with a nice view of the valley. Great views at the top. Our 9 and 6 year old boys hiked with us and grandparents. Trail was good for all of them. If you want 90-120 minute hike good for a moderate crew, this is a nice option.

This was an amazing hike. I have never been on a trail that has been so well maintained. Mile marker posts were present every .5 miles. We were camping nearby and this hike provided much needed shade and cooler temps at the higher elevation.

Great and rewarding trail overall, challenging at times but not brutal. Very muddy (due to recent rain) and some parts have tough terrain.

Lots of different terrains and conditions. You'll cross the river multiple times and it has tons of roots and rocks, so wear some good shoes. It was very muddy (raining) when we went and some sections were slippery. Overall, it was a rewarding hike!

Enjoyable 30min climb down to two scenic overlooks next to the falls. Great workout climb up stairs and gravel covered trail.

This is a nice trail but it was super crowded and I just felt like you couldn’t get close enough to the falls. The trail is nice and clearly marked and the falls are pretty but you see them only from a distance and for me, that was a downfall. I like to get up close and personal with them. It is worth the additional hike to chimney rock to the overlook and I enjoyed the fact that the trail was nicely kept. But I probably wouldn’t go back to this one. It just isn’t my favorite way to hike. I prefer water you can get in and enjoy.

Very nice

This is a well maintained trail with awesome views at the top. The trail is narrow in places but in good shape. Great hike for my 2 dogs, they loved it!

Such a fun hike, with a variety of terrain! Multiple creek crossings to play in! The last 1/2 mile may be challenging if it’s rained a lot recently.

Plenty of switch backs and shade. Amazing view at the 1 mile marker. Friendly park ranger there had all kinds of animal bones to show the kids.

Plenty of fantastic views.

Have to desire to do this hike again (unless to get a view of the falls freezing over), but this is a must for anyone visiting the Gorge for the first time. Can have a lot of tourists.

Beautiful, easy hike up to the observation tower, which offers a 360° Blue Ridge view. Loved the downhill run with some slight inclines to add a little challenge for this beginning runner. Will be coming back again and again!

What an incredible waterfall and views from the top and bottom. Easy trail, a little muddy and ruts but overall excellent wide path trails. Bring a camera for some beautiful photography moments. Large parking lot, no bathrooms and limited cell service.

This is a nice trail and one can see why it's so popular. A bit rocky around 0.25MM then a mix of gravel, which was much appreciated as it rained at the summit and down to the parking lot. Nice walk in the woods with 4-5 switchbacks, muddy in spots, but really this trail is what I think when I think hiking! Views as stated in other reviews which were lucky enough to see on way down.

Beautiful views at 1 mile and 1.9 miles. My Garmin had this trail at 1,200 feet of elevation gain, not 500 or 900 as other reviews have suggested. Don't know what that's about! It was definitely an uphill climb the whole way though. Benches throughout and two overlooks at the top. Narrow trails and lots of deer (wear bug spray!--where deer are, ticks follow). Some very rocky spots. Should definitely do this trail with good shoes and probably expect to carry kiddos for at least part of it.

Lovely 2 1/4 hike through blackberry laden fields, past idyllic campgrounds, fern-filled forests to cool streams. Has something for everyone. Highly recommend this one!

Loved this hike! Great variety of views (meadows, mountains, trees, wildflowers, etc.). Wide trail with gravel and very few rocks/roots sticking out to trip you up. The switchbacks made the elevation gain quite manageable. The firetower at the top has incredible views and is quite unique for a trail! This is the perfect vacation hike as a family or with kids.

reading this site, we got out early. It does start behind the first set of restrooms at the picnic area, over a bridge where it forks. We veered left and did the trail counterclockwise in about 3-1/2 hours stopping occasionally, one time for snacks. A lot of rhododendrons and a walk through the campgrounds, where there was another restroom. Then up an incline, more rhodos, then into an open field, where wife found blackberries and I found a barren apple tree. Into the woods again and now crossing several streams. I had hiking boots for my PF, she had Keens. Both fine. After 1/2 way more roots on trail and then rapids. It got harder here and we took several detours down to rapids. No snakes. We finally saw some people from other direction. Most people take the right at the veer and come directly to Falls. The last part of that is strenuous. I would not take a dog unless you can carry him. Crossed the iron bridge where MST splits, then up and out emerging about 20 mins to open field and throngs of picnickers . Where'd all those people come from? Reminded us of old family holiday picnics. Nice day! PS...no bridge out

Nice way to view the falls if you don't want to make the hike down to the bottom. Trail was easy enough for whole family , it was a little slippery in areas due to some recent rain.
