Absolutely glorious hike, the views at the bottom are absolutely stunning. The trail was icy till about halfway down. If you make it like 300ft past the chain, you're golden.
Trail is snowed/iced over for 85% of the hike. Microspikes are a must. Scree wash near the bottom was 100% scramble in full sun, muddy and no snow at that point. Absolutely worth the effort! Hike took 8 hours total, as we took our time making sure to get good footing in the icy conditions. Jeremy at Visitor Center was extremely informative and helpful.
Awesome hike in the snow n ice covered trail. Def recommend, spikes or snow shoes not needed just solid hiking boots and good hiking stick
This hike was pretty steep and technical. We did it today and I definitely agree the trekking poles and micro spikes were necessary, as well as gaiters. The snow was about halfway up my calf. Amazing hike and worth the descent and climb. Plan on spending 4 to 5 hours. We hike a lot and it still took quite a bit of time to descend and ascend. Atleast in the snow that is, I could imagine this hike being completely different without deep snow.
No entrance fee today. Gunnison Point was closed due to icy stairs, so this was a good substitute for similar views. Would also recommend Oak Flats Trail and Ridge Rim Trail to get best views.
No entrance fee to get in the park today. No cell service at the visitor center parking lot, so make sure you save your planned hikes to reference. Trail is narrow, but packed down. You will need micro spikes or yaktrax for sure footing. There is ice in some places. Trail has beautiful overlooks into the gorge and is easy to access off the top end of the Vistor Center parking lot.
Beautiful hike all together but parts were hard to descent due to slippery conditions, brining trekking poles should help a lot. The views are amazing
Really beautiful place. Unfortunately being this time of year unless you're skiing or snow shoeing this was really the only accessible trail. Still amazing but I would recommend if you're wanting to see more views and spend the day to go once it's open all the way around
It was snowing and gorgeous. Hank and Maggie loved running around and playing in the snow off leash!
No fees right now as of Jan 2021. This was amazing! There are some minor technical parts as you descend - it helps if you have basic climbing experience. Go slow and slide on your butt when you need to. Going up, it is packed snow with lots of foot holds embedded into the snow. Was able to do the entire trail without the chain, so it's passable. I had microspikes, it was not possible without those. There was only one difficult area right above the 80 foot chain, there is a set of boulders there that required some finesse to get over. Not super icy, mostly just snow.
nice n easy
Trail is completely packed down. You're gonna want spikes or Yaktrak for sure footing! No entrance fees in Jan 2021 so far.
Did this hike in June 29th 2020. It was pretty steep but doable. Not many people on this trail. Not much shade until you reach the bottom. Did have to dodge poison ivy in some parts. Very beautiful!
Great place to ski and snowshoe. Beautiful views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Pretty well trafficked quite a few people it just snowed so it was a winter wonderland 100% recommend
