This was perhaps one of my favorite hikes yet in the Sierras . With a rather brisk morning start and a brilliant fall sun to warm our dispositions, my wife and I trekked to 9 lakes, some were frozen over and cracking loudly, water falls, beautiful high country meadows and mountain pass and at Chocolate Peak ridge were treated to the sun glistening off of Ruwau Lake, Treasure Lakes and Long Lake all in the same view. The elevation gain is moderate on this hike however be prepared to climb through and up a talus field to get to the ridge just before Ruwau Lake. After that it’s all down hill returning to South Lake. Definitely will do this one again!

This was a very beautiful hike! I didn’t do the whole thing, because it was spontaneous. However, I will go back soon and do the entire thing. Lots of rocks and boulders on the trail, which is so fun! But be aware of that when planning for your hike. Trail shoes are fine.

Pretty sure it was more than 9 miles round trip. I also definitely recommend going to Dorothy if you’re up there anyways!!

Creek crossing was somewhat intimidating. But totally doable.

Great, well marked trail. A bit of variance as far as distance; we both logged 7.0 miles RT but it was super fun. We left at noon and were back at 3:45.We saw exactly 5 people on the way up and 0 on the way down. A couple had dogs who seemed happy! We had a bit of rain on the way down but it made it all the more adventurous. Gorgeous scenery, lakes and wildflowers. A real nice day hike.

the trail is overgrown, ill-defined, very steep and scrambly. great place to get away from crowds, get a workout (steep) and explore off trail (you will lose the trail more than once). fun but not my favorite.

Tough hike with heavy packs due to steep elevation climb (2k gain in under 3 miles), seems to be much more enjoyable when just day hiking. took us 5.5 hrs to get to the 3rd lake due to our pack loads. once arrived we found the perfect camp site close to a good moving stream that connects all the lakes. good fishing, brown and rainbow trout. dog friendly area, not much foot traffic, limited camp sites which in turn means not too many people should you be looking for a place of solitude. mosquitos were not bad at all as long as you bring a good bug spray (we used deet free bug repellent and had no problems). second day we ventured to the 4th lake and went swimming and fishing.....was too tired to try lake number 5. this is a must backpacking trip with lots of scenery and wildlife.

Tough hike with heavy packs but seems to be much more enjoyable as a day hike. Took us 5.5 hours to get to the 3rd lake due to our loads. Once arrived we found the perfect camp site close to a good moving stream which provided our water source for the duration of our stay. Good fishing, rainbow and brown trout. Dog friendly area and lots of day hikers with dogs. Mosquitos weren’t as bad as I was led to believe. Bring a good bug Spray and you’ll be fine.

This was a good moderate hike. Unfortunately we missed the actual loop and ended just doubling back to get out, should have had this app with me! Great views at least 3 different lakes.

Nice and easy backpacking. But to many mosquitoes. Need more insect repellents.

From the trailhead to the 3rd Hilton lake it is ruined by the packers! Deep dish sand with heaps of donky doo. Why don't they require poop bags? After lake 3 it was sublime. I suggest waiting until Fall after some rain and the packers go home.

Pros: You won't run into many people, you'll have a peaceful time while there. The trail is straight uphill so the next day will be super easy coming down :) :)

Cons: if you're bringing a dog be prepared to lift them over huge boulders that are part of the trail, this was very cumbersome and caused quite a bit of anxiety for the dog and myself.
Trail is easy to loose, trail needs some upkeep.
not a lot of fish.

I have hiked this trail several times and yes it is moderately difficult but not hard. The switchbacks three-quarters of the way into the trail is what gets ya. If you go too early in the season, you're going to have difficulty with the snow and if you go in early June the creek crossing can be difficult. However, you will be rewarded with the Majestic View from Mildred Lake.

beautiful hike to mildred, and yes there is a pretty tough creek crossing, can be sketch, but love that its a part of the trip to mildred. great views of some iconic sierra peaks the whole way up. lots of options once you make it to the lake, but you have to figure those out for yourself ;-]

Backpacked in on 6/16/18. Very steep with lots of scree only to be out done by enormous boulders that you must climb over and around. The trail isn’t marked very well which can lead to wasted time looking for said trail. Spend the effort going up Kearsarge.

Great hike. Goes from Rock Creek to Crowley Lake Campground BLM. Traffic was moderate on the trail and everyone was extremely friendly.

Great views from beginning to end. Stream crossing was a little intense.

Hiked today. Not for the AAA Club hiker - which I am. Trail had lots of scree, snow, and eventually defeated at the cross over, where there once was a concrete bridge, due to the high level runoff.
Definitely bring water moccasins if you want to cross over and get to the first lake.
Regardless the scenery was spectacular and worth my 8 mile out-and-back.

The highest of the five lakes is a jewel.

It wasn't a hike as much as it was a walk on a dirt road in the sun. No scenery and plenty of dust.

We did this hike because the hikes we came here for were snowed in. This loop was very easy, steady elevation climb the entire way - so the elevation you're gaining doesn't feel much of anything. This trail follows a truck trail the entire way, and features a tiny stream crossing. There were no people other than us, very nice. At the back of the loop, the views of the mountain range is magnificent!

We went today 12.09.2017, the trail was covered with snow and the lakes were frozen. The trail was nice, it gives you great views and the silence around was amazing.

Hiked this trail in summer of 2013. Steep 4 mile hike in but well worth it. We camped at lake #2 and fished mostly in lake #3. Caught a bunch of fish in each lake we tried. Campsites were nice and we only saw one other person at lake #3. Beautiful views of the valley at lake #2.

Tough but worth it! This trail required some route finding as the main path is hard to find sometimes. I hiked up to the first a second lakes north of Golden Trout and then came back as I was running out of daylight. The trail is very steep and loose in places. Wear good shoes or boots and take your time.

Agree with below post! I went counter clockwise (started on long lake side) with my two Weimaraners and it was a bit sketchy getting them down the boulders connecting Ruwau and chocolate. Overall, great hike if you can find the trail. Some amazing person stacked rocks to try and mark the trail (cairns) so look for those when you lose the trail!

Hiked this with my father in the 90's. Actually did a couple other's in this general area that went to smaller little lakes which I can't seem to find listed on here. Clover lake? Comes to mind. Anyhow. We always made this a 2-3 day trip up in here. The elevation makes it a bit harder. Anyone of able body, fortunate enough to experience backpacking anywhere in this general vicinity will have memories of a lifetime. The smells & scenery are breathtaking. You will be challenged. You will be tired. But, you will feel so accomplished when you return. Pack smart.

Not sure why they say "it features a lake", just finished it today and caught fish in 6 lakes on the trail, their map doesnt even show Ruwau lake.
make sure you realize the trail is not well maintained once it leaves the main trail by long lake.
i lost it several times but made it okay, keep a lookout for the cairns, very beautiful trip.
suggest you go counter clockwise, the trail between Rawau and Chocolate lake is pretty rough, wouldnt want to go uphill (clockwise) on that segment.
